Diane Abbott vs Alan Johnson.......no contest.

David Milliband lost to Ed because of the unions vote. Most Labour MP's/MEP's and Constituency Labour parties voted for David.

The unions blew it for Labour when they insisted on Ed Milliband and not his brother
David Milliband like John Smith is another Labour Prime Minister we never had.

Loved John Smith but he sadly died of a heart attack. He was the kind of Labour leader we have been missing ever since that era.

Diane Abbott says that without Labour's trade union link it would just be a "bunch of Oxbridge PPE graduates looking for constituencies" and says the unions have insured ordinary people, including black people and women, have found a place in the party.

To answer your question James Boleyn -- the Labour Party like there mp's to be of a non British origin , horses for courses . Look at the constituency, look at the candidate, and look at the results . Being intelligent would be looked on as an added bonus

@@JamesCM86 because of colour not on merit. most of the homes in her constituency are council owned and people are due for rezoning.. cant wait..

    • @JamesCM86

Nick Jupp The way voting works is that MP’s win because they get the most amount of votes in there constituencies. So she won because she got the majority of votes, no one voted for her colour. Does the fact that she’s black and an amp doing far better than you in life bother you? You seem really angry about it. Sad. I hope your life improves

I was in a trade union for years and never once had my opinion asked on any question! The leadership simply made all the decisions and if you didn't like it, tough luck!

Very respectful debate between Diane Abbott and Alan Johnson.
Strangely enough given the Corbyn era, i suspect Alan regrets supporting the changes as he did then.
Diane Abbott was right. One member one vote was an attempt to weaken the unions.
it is also quite telling that Corbyn was not actually the favourite of the unions at first but unions still wield a lot of power in the Labour movement

One member one vote is the democratic way of electing leaders. It was introduced by John Smith who was worth three dozen Abbott’s.

  • @jez5192

Abbott is so utterly condescending. She talks over the other person and adopts a holier than thou voice, the sentiment of which is; 'if only you were smart enough to see the world as I do'. Thank goodness Corbyns lot are gone.

You need to listen to the unions, in order to have descent policies on housing?
Surely policies should be developed by Ministers?
Isn't that what they were elected to do?
