Jerry walks us through his current live rig for the ongoing Black Gives Way to Blue tour where he's using Bogner and Dave Friedman Marsha heads, G&L Rampages, Gibson Les Pauls and of course some effects including his original Dunlop Crybaby wah used on the epic "Man in the Box."

There's no one like Jerry. He wrote everything but acts like he's just the guitar player. I shook his hand in 2005 at the house of blues in Hollywood. Cool cat.
He didn't write everything?!!
@@deborahp6450You’re thinking of Dave Mustaine, now he wrote everything.
@@Severe_Metalholicism is Dave a JW?
@@deborahp6450he used to be
@@deborahp6450 he grew up a Jehovahs witness but now he's christian
very cool that Jerry did this interview himself... so many guys send out the guitar techs.
Well he did work in a music store back in the 80's.
Sean King he worked in the music store where i bought my first guitar
@@OGDonCorleon44 thats badass man
Some idiot inevitably makes the same comment on every single rig rundown. Tedious.
@@fdfsdfsvsfgsg4888 what comment? What idiot? Lol wtf
Jerry Cantrell, the riff wizard!
Jerry seems like a nice guy. He's a very underrated guitar player.
Marco Dellorusso Under rated as hell. People keep saying 'oh Layne died, Alice is no more'. Nope. If Cantrell died, that would be the true death of AiC.
SlayerRock4ever I have never heard truer words.
SlayerRock4ever correct!
+Lydian77 Yeah, I don't really get that either. Maybe he's considered underrated by guitar geeks because he is actually concerned about writing great songs rather than light speed solos that make the prog rockers drool. I respect Satch, Vai, and all the others; but I'd rather hear an AiC album than anything Satch or Vai release (besides Vai's time with Frank Zappa...that shit rules!).
+Marco Dellorusso Extremely underrated.
I love to hear him praising his tech so much, very humble excellent player.
Wasn't Dave Friedman literally teching for him back then? Doesn't get much better than that!
I could listen to him talk all day. His voice soothes me.
its saying something that the best artist rig rundowns are the shortest.
I agree. Also the best rig rundowns are those presented by the artists themselves and not by their techinician
peris1991 less is more! The only exceptions in terms of duration are Slipknot and John Petrucci (also an exception on his tech doing it and not him) oh and Brian May
I think this guy is way more influential than he’s given credit for. At a time when one didn’t necessarily have to be an amazingly gifted, innovative guitarist, he was.
Jerry C. is one of the nicest guys in music. He doesn't cow tow to interviewers, but he's straight up honest, and humbly truthful. The successes of AIC are due to a large part of Jerry's Accessibility and down to earth personality. When I lived in Seattle during the decade of the 1990's about half the most successful bands were from that area and all these guys were cool, approachable and thankful for their fans. I'll add Eddie Vedder & Pearl Jam, and Candle box to the list. Why did I leave out Nirvana? Nirvana was Wondrously talented , but not always nice guys Kurt had some huge issues that impacted Dave & Chris' roles.
Cool Story bro
Terrance Hill Yeah after the success of nevermind, Kurt had them change the deal from 33% each to Kurt with 70% and the rest split with the other guys. Plus, it was retroactive, so they had to give a bunch of money back to Kurt. I was a huge fan and was devastated when he died, but I don't think many fans knew yet that he was a narcissist.
most people with that much talent are narccisists. true story.@@sadmachines6991
@@sadmachines6991 that might have been Courtney's doing 😂
@@sadmachines6991 he wasn't a narcissist at all he was the most introverted insecure person ever. The reason he wanted 70% is because he did like 70% if not more
jerry is not just the guitar player. He is the writer, the performer, the genius that is behind AIC.
I'm so impressed. I've always liked Alice In Chains and always dug Jerry as a player. To see him be so cool with Jordan and actually come out and talk to PG instead of sending his Tech shows how cool and down to earth he is. Bravo Jerry.
jerry is regarded as one of the finest guitar players and is somewhere in the top 35 on rolling stones top 100. he has a really cool style of playing
Alice has impacted my life a lot, been my favorite band for many years. Jerry's been the biggest influence for me wanting to play guitar for many years. I'm finally going to pick up a guitar. Definitely going to be the sound I'll try to get some kind of a similar sound. Jerry's not given the credit he deserves.
How is your playing going now?
@@samuelL.mackin also wondering how is a guy doing
How has your guitar playing working out, did you pick it up, are you still at it?
Be Well
Lasted about a week and quit. What a story.
Seeing this guy play live made me seriously re-think my playing. He takes the instrument to it's limit. Great player indeed. Thanks for the Songs Jerry! Cheers!
this guy is a genius
i thought he used to use VHT's as well....
those rhythm tones on Dirt are some of the very best ever recorded.... dude has an ear for a sick tone, and the studio skill to get it committed to tape...
long live alice in chains...
Agreed but what the hell was it. Everyone says the snorkler mod by bogner. However I can’t find the specs. The amp was a old 2203.
@@totc6196 the snorkler was on Facelift. It was a 2204, the 50 watt JCM800, combo version turned into a head. Bogner added another preamp tube and tweaked some other stuff. I wish there was more concrete info about it because it's one of my favorite guitar tones (We Die Young sounds amazing). Not sure they used it on the second album. I think it Dirt had three amps blended together
@@CharlesWillisBonsai ok so it was a 2204 so it was a 50 watt. Same I’m trying to do a digital thing with the fractal would be as you said awesome to know exactly what was done. Some good videos on here but the guy won’t give up the circuit.
Wow what i would do to see those two pale yellow guitars in person those are the guitars he used with layne back In The day and they're still going wow just wow
Well actually those two guitars have been since retired.
+Sean King (Paranormal88) Since when? :( ... Mindyou just as well I guess lol...
Well I read on a gear website, that they both had good sized cracks in them recently.
You can see the original G&L rampage blue dress displayed at MoPop in Seattle.
I think it’s about time to do a reboot! We need more Jerry!
A week ago, finally I got to see this great musician live and it was simply awesome, one of the best performers that I've seen.
love how organized his stuff is. The way it's set up is pretty epic
Awesome set list! Always loved Jerrys tone. We die young intro rips your face off!
The man the myth the legend my friggin hero
Still one of the coolest rockers on the planet still writing and performing awesome music
Still my favorite band 30+ years later
Jerrys studio trick for the first 2 albums was a Marshall 1×12 cabinet with a mic in front and a mic behind the cabinet to get the punch.
Yes sir.
I like these rig rundowns because they let you know all and exactly everything that the artists use.
Jerry Cantrell is a really nice guy love AIC!!
Very cool. Jerry is one of my all time favorites. He seems to be a really nice guy too!
Great stuff here! I see he uses an EVH flanger. Probably uses that for "Rooster". Cool. He has some really tasteful chops. Dark and Deep. Like no other.
Rooster he probably used chorus. I think an example of the flanger is within Down in a hole
Nice to see Jerry still carrying on after his brother passed, tough to loose a friend you love, but his music is still with lance daily's soul
Great job on getting Jerry Cantrell! Alice in Chains reminds me of the best times of rock and roll.
one of my favs, and one of the most underrated in the seattle scene and in general!
back in the 90s and before layne died, people forgot about them after 1995 or so; people are so fickle. glad to see them getting their dues again.
good to see a new rig rundown vid.
Definitely one of my favorites if not all time fave. Always makes want to pick up my guitar. I wish I had an amp that could match his tones
That was really good,I saw them in 2014 at a VERY hot 40c + soundwave festival, and man he sure sounded great.
I agree with Redroom Studios, really nice to see the player himself walk you through it. He told us what the tech does... NOT the tech telling us. Rare, now that I think of it, that the guy we want to hear does it. Nice walkthrough. Supports the fact the fact that Jerry does not acknowledge the impact he has had on guitar players... hes not in it for that.
yeah!!! , alice makes me so happy, great to see Jer again
Jerry in my home town. Made my heart skip a beat!
he is a UNIT i always looked up to those guys that really bring the set every time. soloing slow but every note hits in the black.. For me he is in a line with guys like Leslie West. Still when i watch AIC concerts i forget about where the sound comes from. Thats how good they are, a trio basically.
A true composer, and living legend !!!
It's a pity it was just 7 minutes long. If it were 1 hour long I would have watched it twice in a single day. Jerry is such a cool guy. I love the way He puts his heart at the stage and I love playing Alice in Chains songs. Jerry is one of my heroes.
So stoked to see that Jerry uses a lot of the gear that I use. I was the guy that turned most of my friends onto this band.
If you rode in my car, you listened to what I was into. This was before the Dirt album. Love this band !
Jerry is an interesting cat, innovator for sure with an ear for tone & gift of talent. One of the best.
Damn, watching random jerry cantrell interviews and realize that I went to high school with the interviewer lol Im jealous as hell Jordan!
Such a humble dude
Please make another video with the rig Jerry is using in this tour
What a setlist!
this song brought out the skill in each member
love his voice
jerry’s one of the greats
Cool to see he has a similar sticker decal replica of his first Rampage. Seen next to the '85 Rampage.
@8bigtubes the wah will be on Display at Namm 2010 at the Dunlop stand. Should be available about a month month or two after it :)
This needs to be redone! Its great by all means but we need an update!
very interesting to see his gear.
Totally cool. Jerry seems like a really smart grounded individual.
He’s pure awesome
I like so much this videos
Jerry was standing at the center bar by himself at The Hard Rock in LV a couple of hours before the show in Dec '09, we were like 'holy shit that's Jerry'. We didn't bug him. They opened with Rain When I Die that night.
Good interview.
People talking about MESA RECTIFIER amp heads ... if you think the tone isn't dirty enough or sounds loose or flabby on the bottom end try a 808 OD or the Maxon ST - 9 pro, it has the same circuit but with a low end switch and you can run it 9V or 18 V! It will tighten up you tube amp and then you'll love the Rectifier amps!
I'm sooooo glad he dosent use all that rack mounted, axe fx, switching system, boutique stuff!!! Amp, guitar, effects all you need
I agree
***** I agree I like buckets and sticks
I pooped yesterday
PLEASE DO AN UPDATED EXTENDED VERSION OF JERRY RIG RUNDOWN!!!!
My favorite guitarist!
I could listen to Jerry talk all day.so laid back and knows his stuff.would love to be his roadie for just one night haha
@ComaAlpha probably referring to his Les Pauls. he has two of them so i'm assuming each one is tuned to the song. you can also see that he uses the SG for No Excuses. the E and D marks are probably the G&L's. Each one of his guitars is tuned and intonated to that tuning so that they sound perfect and pristine. i started doing it with my guitars and it's just alot easier and it sounds fuckin amazing. i highly recommend this to any guitarist in a band that has multiple tunings for their sets.
only 90's kids remember Jordan Wagner and Becca Derps
Check out Bugera amps and try putting a maxon od808 in front of it. You can get that setup for around $600-$800. Has a ton of tone possibilities and dialing in Cantrell's tone would take some time but you could get really close.
Jerry, Jimmy Page and Alex Lifeson three self taught players. All down to earth great players. The thing they have in common? They all have great feel for the song they are playing! You can't teach that!
I have one of those Ground Control Pro units like shown at very end of video.... too complicated to figure out reason I don't use mine..... lol I play without amps 99% of the time on electric guitars... But, that's about to change once I break out my new to me JC Tribute Rampage out of the box that just arrived UPS
I love thw kahler bridges
He's just like every good player. He's still trying to always improve his tone. The most beautiful tone I ever heard as far as just plain good clean perfect tone was a fender devill 212 amp with a us fender guitar and ernie ball 10-46 strings. The best distorted tone I've ever heard was an amp called diamond at a club. Never have heard one like that before since then.
@sfh113 alnico pro2 neck position is a fucking badass pickup for melodic and warm suff.. cleans and leads sound incredible and you can totally tell the difference from other pickups (i had dimarzio tone zones before... then a 59 and then the alnico.. it's really amazing dude check it out)... and on the bridge i have a duncan custom... it's a high output pickup but not like over the top, but still can put some decent amount of punch in low gain amps and stuff... cool stuff
"Boggy Depot" and "Degradation Trip, Volumes 1 & 2" are fuckin' awesome monolithic solo albums fitting right alongside Alice In Chains' stuff. This cat is a really powerful dude. He was born the year of the Firehorse (Chinese calender and appears just once every 50 years) and it shows in both his work and character.
iso-cabs is a clever idea. First time I've heard of them.
Mucho Repecto..! Plays ,Writes,Sings..Really up there in my estimation, For all that counts..! Peace Ye`All..! Oh...Billy Duffy(The Cult) does one of these..Legend !
shiva! love it.
PG needs to do update of Jerry Cantrell rig since he now uses Dave Friedman signature amp.
Jerry always got a great guitar sound, great player great song writer,, need i say more,, great singer,,, dam what cant this guy do? hahaha
I'd never hold this against him, because as a recovering addict, I know no one could have helped me, until I helped myself, but I think if you asked him that question, he would respond that he couldn't help save Layne.
love the melvins shirt!
This is really the first time I have heard a major artist openly prefer the Kahler trem over the Floyd. Which is right on for me. I love the Kahlers. I never understood the negative rep that they got. Smoother, stays in tune, no string breakage and just easier to use.
Slayer were Kahler dudes too.
Many guitarist don't normally go for the single p/u setup. But when I really think about it, how often do you use the neck p/u? I flip it on occasionally when I remember to but it's only because it's there. Unless you play something dramatically different from song to song, it usually stays on the bridge. If you need a completly different sound, grab another guitar that's setup for that piece.
i think it switches between the different guitars or wireless units in his rack, i am not quite sure though if he uses a wireless system though
Such a shame that the Rampage is discontinued now
I wonder if Jerry uses the older analog Boss choruses or the newer digital ones.
Long live Jerry!
I need help determining a new set of pickups for my Jackson.. I like to play metal and i like that high gain sound but i also really like the steve vai sort of sound too. Can someone suggest pickups for me please?
Would it be possible to do another Alice in Chains Rig Rundown? Not just to see what's changed since this video in Jerry's rig, but I'm personally also interested in Mike and Will's gear.
@GoHabs13 Same here, man. I can't imagine someone touching my equipment on stage at all. My drummer has done that when he plays my guitar and I can say I have gotten back at him with his drums :D
I use a 5150 and a Mesa dual rec heads with mesa cabs and my shit ROCKS !!!!
do a rig rundown on daron malakian (system of a down, scars on broadway)
jerry is a legend
Tell us about your rig jerry "hot on the left, cold on the right, shit runs downhill"
Fans will know
Sweet.
@c4tze Agreed. Mesa's aren't dirty so much as high gain.
I would have to agree but the Low end in the Triple Rec sounds much tighter at higher volumes than the 5150. They are both great amps tough. . .
cool guitars!
Fun fact at 0:55 the Uberschall you see was modded by Mark Cameron when he worked at Bogner, it was not just an off the rack Uber. Check my channel for real deal Bogner Cantrell modded gear.
@adam79adam79 Must be a Dunlop. I guess it's the Super Charger model. Maybe with an extra ring, but essentially it's the same design.
Ive got a Randall Ultra model in my Randall RM100 w. EL-34's thats pretty mean & nasty. He has a great tone hugh!
FUCK YEAH!!! JC is an AWESOME guy... AND he has a Tele Deluxe in his rack... far and away the coolest guitar he's got there...BUT I am QUITE boased when it comes to TD's... that's what I play exclusively now and I think they're the best guitar I've ever had my hands on. Course I've never gotten my hands on a Languadoc so... I like how down to earth and cool JC is in this interview. Makes him seem like a REAL person, not some fake persona like so many guys of the "new rock' crowd... pure legend
@ericwylde WRONG. Majority of the 'Dog' album was recorded with the 5150 Eddie Van Halen gave him. Jerry was quoted saying the 5150 sounded dirtier than the Mesa's he was using at the time.
