You've got a sub from me! This is the first video of yours that I have watched. Well done. 👍
The description of your channel hits home too. This line pretty much sums up where I'm at: "I am a novice surfer that is loving the challenge of learning how to improve both my surfing skills but also loving to try and figure out my own life along the way."

Another good video Adam! The key to getting your position right on the pop-up is to rotate your right hip when you are in the push up position. This lets your left foot and knee slide forward on the board and keeps your butt down. Then as you rise you bring your right knee up to your chest. If you do this you can actually pop up in a crouch for small waves. Second fun tip for you - When you cross step keep your weight on your front foot not your back foot. Makes all the difference. Keep the stoke alive !!!

Thanks and thanks for the good advice and comment as always. I made an earlier video a few weeks ago about finding a better feeling of keeping my weight on my trail foot while going down the line, keeps me higher up in the steeper part of the wave feeling like the board is better dug in and more stable, but yes, cross-stepping will need to be an active balance between shifting my weight forward as I go further instead of falling backwards as I have so delicately demonstrated in my wipe outs in this video Hahaha! Still a ton to learn and loving every moment of it. Thanks again for your comment and stoke!

I would highly highly recommend looking at the ombe surf/Chris Mills (surf strength coach) walk up to popup technique rather than doing a jump up style popup. I really can't stress how much of a game changer this technique was for my popup. I'm now able to get into waves that never could have otherwise. The walk up to popup technique is also what will eventually lead to the kelly slater pro style popup that you referenced, allowing you to end the take off process with a more forward facing athletic surf stance that you see advanced surfers using. Anyway kudos to you for a great candid video! Keep it up

Everyone is telling so much info, so it’s hard to concentrate and change too much . But…
Yeah check out Cris Mills walk up. Because if you ever want to surf a midlength or fish you can’t pop off your toes as they are in the water.
But yeah you need to pop up into a good surf stance, (get your shoulders n hips in forward sprinter position and your rear hip tucked in facing forward, by angling you back knee into and behind your front knee. Looks awkward buts it’s a game changer. I practice mine on a skateboard.) and just keep your head up and looking where you want to go. Eyes up, head up, chest up. You’ll get there with practice.

@ I’ve been where you are. Rode longboards for years , never even thought about my popup. Just did it. Then moved to short boards and popup went to pieces. Finally used chicken wing method kind of. Then 2 years ago or so did Cris Perfect Popup program . He does a very deep dive into the mechanics of it. That , and Clayton’s advice from OMBE changed my pop up to the walk up. Which if done quickly looks like a pop ! (With my age and spine still more of 2 step process, and it took a while to ingrain new habits). Anyway hope this all helps.

I am by no means an expert, but I have struggled with the same thing. When you pop up your butt is higher than your head, you already know this. With your butt higher than your head it forces you to look down. I see this more in your practice sessions on dry land than when yo are actually surfing. The question is why does this happen? What I see is that both of feet try to move under you at the same time. With your back foot moving with your lead foot there is no space left to get your legs underneath you in a balanced stance. Try to shoot the lead leg through while letting the back leg trail behind. Your head should be held high at all times. Here is a great video:ua-cam.com/video/gK151uYYb3M/v-deo.html Good luck!

This is a massive coincidence, I just saw this same video yesterday and was practicing popping up on the floor, focusing on my trail foot turning rail side first to start the rotation of my hips early, this movement rolled my trail legs ankle towards the board pulling my trail knee lower creating space and improved rotation of the hips. I have a buddy that had me in a controlled motion try to reverse from stand to to laying on the board which gave me a similar feeling of keeping the trail leg low. Not sure if that makes sense, lol, It is slowly but surely beginning to make sense, now I just need to practice more and translate it to the water. . Either way thank you for the advice and sharing this video, epic.

Angle your hands . Puts your chest at an angle, and your hips follow. Changing your pop up takes time unfortunately
