Garden tilling with the Stihl KM 131R | Bolo VS Pick Tines

  • The tilling attachment for the Stihl KM 131R comes automatically with Pick tines. So I was wondering how the Bolo tines work as many bigger tilling machines come with them.
Bolo tines are advertised to be used to cultivate rocky, sandy, claylike compacted soil.

Actually there is a huge difference between bolo and pick tines.
Pick tines - heavy weeds, or grass (sod) , heavy (clay) soil that needs to broken up.
Bolo tines - compost based, or light soil , de-weeding right before planting , or after planting. Can achieve consistent results in the forward momentum .
I use both with Stihl MM 56 C machine

In theory you maybe right...I doubt the light built of the unit will do anything with clay other than frustrate the operator ;)

Use both bolo and pick tines on my M55 tiller. When mounted properly the bolo tines work great in dry to damp soil. The garden I till is 35 square. Also, lots of rocks as this is the Missouri Ozarks. I primarily use the pick tines as weeding tines between row crops.

Great if that's working for you. The bolo tines are not shown as a feature on the Kombi unit, only on the yard boss. I was just curious and wanted to test it out. I think the Kombi unit is not heavy enough to work properly with the bolo tines.

I noticed you have the bolo tines mismatched. All four must cut / curve forward or backwards.
Thank you for your helpful video WV Hank

Sorry, I got your follow question. I just haven’t figured out how to reach you yet?
Take off all four tines, simply lay the outer tines down… they will not be relocated. Take your inner tines off, swap them each to the other side of the machine. Then Replace the outer tines.
All tines will now be cutting in the same direction.
They are machined and are difficult to slide on. They do fit.

That’s my attempt at showing how each side should be paired. When paired the cut different

Can you please make a video how to pair them?

      Rudi,
I’m glad to help. As you can see I don’t really know how to use this online proces

Rudi, I was watching your video. I found similar results. I noticed you have your Bolo tines mismatched. They cut differently when they all are cutting forward or all reversed. You have a forward and reversed on each side.

Thanks, not quite sure if there's "mismatch" as there's only one way to mount them...unless I'm missing something...lol

It may have a plug on the gear case which you can remove and then use a Stihl proprietary grease tube to fill it up.

Rudi, Have you also tried to mount the aerator tines on the Kombi machine? I am wanting to buy a Kombi motor but I'd like a lot to be able to mount the yard boss aerator tines on it. Your video gives me hopes that the shaft is the same for both machines so it's theorically possible to mount all the yard boss accessories on a kombi motor

Pretty sure they'll fit. Although I think it's a waste of money and efforts to use a yardboss or kombi machine for lawn aeration...simply not enough weight.

@@EuroYardService Thank you very much. I'm on the experimenting side of people so I'm open to give a try with the Kombi. Even at the MF-MM detacher on the 131R
Adding weight to something is never a problem if so is desired, removing weight is much more complicated.
There is also to consider how the tool is used in respect to the rotation of the tines.
If you have ever used a router with a big profile in a woodworking project, you know that going in the same direction of the rotation of the cutting will make the router push itself away from the wood and accellerate forward, trying to "run" on the blades instead of cutting. But if you go in the opposite direction, the router will push back at you, but as you push it forward, it will pull itself full depth into the wood and keep working like that. Same principle apply here

The pointy tines where put on backwards !! For better cut they need to be reversed..

Ha, never noticed. Glad you caught that. Will have to check if that gives a different performance.

They work better with the Stihl yard boss

Most likely, yes. I was just curious to see what the difference may be. Do you have the yard boss?
