    I was 18 years old during the summer between my last year in high school and going off to college. I got a summer job with a grading company building a rail bed to a new electric generating plant. I was hired to run an old D-3 Cat dozer without a blade hooked to a sheeps foot roller. I operated that thing sun up to sun down seven days a week but I yearned to run a pan…..that’s what we called them back then I don’t know when they started designating them scrapers. Occasionally the pan operators would let me run a load and after dropping the pan to fast when dumping and snapping the cables I got pretty good at it. The owner of the company was watching me as I tried hard to do a good job and eventually when the operators took a weeks vacation I got to run those Cat 619C’s to my heart’s content. There was no cab or air conditioning just an open cockpit. I almost did not leave for college because I knew then I had the job I wanted. I did leave at the end of summer and go on to college but to this day over 50 years later when I see scrapers working I have to stop and just watch them to hear the diesels screaming and take in the smell of dirt.

    Hi, HEI Civil.
    Thanks for the video. I have 57 years up 'in the saddle' on many types of earth moving machines, possibly least on scrapers, backhoes and dump trucks, and I have never worked a day of it.
    I have always been a big kid inna BIGGGG sandpit being paid to play with other people's toys.
    Just my 0.02.
    You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

    Hi, HEI Civil.
    Running down the haul road with around 90 to 100 tons at around 30 miles per hour??????????????
    Try running a Cat 660 or 666 scraper with maybe 140 - 150 tons gross at FORTY EIGHT miles per hour. THAT is moving dirt.
    Personally, I prefer running push cats or blades.
    Just my 0.02.

      So you are saying they only go 30mph? I operated a 657 push pull for two years on a dam project in the mid 70's and the haul road to the other side of the project was as hard as concrete from all the years of use and slightly down hill. The superintendent said we were going 55 mph and it was the same as driving your car down the highway.
      The shop had a chart with all cat equipment and if I remember it said the 657 empty weight was around 210,000lbs and a struck load which meant level full was another 130,000lbs so a total weight of 350,000lbs is 175 tons. We mostly hauled gravel and sometimes the clay for the core. I hardly ever had a load that wasn't so full it rolled over the sides until we stopped loading.
      They sent us a few miles down the road to prep a new clay operation and clearing and stock piling the topsoil was really cool. I had so much on one time I had to work the apron up and down to get open enough to unload.
      Open cab so no heat or AC and a good bit of dust. When the water rig was not working we would back down in the small river the project was damming and get as much water as we could and quickly head back to the cut to water the haul road.
      Was quite an interesting job.

  • @timothygrell4398

    Why such small machines? If your going to be a dirt company 57's are much more efficient and would only need a few in that small job!

    • @UAL012
      @UAL012 2 роки тому

      Moving 657's in Colorado is a major pain. You have to split the machine in half to move it. The only way those become cost effective is if you're doing multi million yard projects. 637's could come in very handy for these guys though.

    • @timothygrell4398
      @timothygrell4398 2 роки тому

      @@UAL012 not saying your wrong because I dont live in Colorado. Maximum Road weight in Colorado is 200000lbs. 657 weigh in at 160000lbs empty. Obviously route can be a issue but one day of splitting a 57 is still a lot fast and cheaper per yard. 37's are still slow and could easily go with 51's instead of 57's.

    • @johnsheridan6452

      Ran scrapers in CO for couple years, we would over-road the 627/637’s to the next job site really early in the morning. Rarely would one go on a trailer.

      That would be the dumbest thing you can do. This Company is paying 20/hr and up for operators. Stay and California and sign up to Local 12 Operating Engineers. They opened up apprentice applications to every 6 months since we need operators bad. Apprentices start at 30 an hour. Journeyman are at 53/hour plus depending on what you operate. These companies make millions and cheat their operators bad!
