Stills and Judy Collins had broke up and Stills wrote this song to try to get her back. When he played it for her she said, "It's a beautiful song but we're not getting back together" or words to that effect. They have remained good friends however and toured together not so many years ago. The Deja Vu album is a masterpiece. "Wooden Ships" should be your next reaction.
This and Wooden Ships are on their first album that's called Crosby, Stills and Nash. Deja Vu is the second album.
Wooden Ships was cowritten with Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane. They both recorded it and the CSN version both came out a couple weeks earlier and it was within the radio 3 minute airplay time. The JA version, which I consider the definitive version, was much longer and so was rarely played on the radio and then only because there was so much demand for it. Perhaps do a side by side listen and give us your thoughts.
It's a similar story to Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now." She left him anyway.
Damn, mans got friend zoned even after writing this gem 😧
Agree. & After Wooden Ships, do Wooden Ships by Jefferson Airplane. Same song done in a very, very different way by a different vocal harmony group in the same scene.
"Fear is the lock" means fear of getting hurt prevents one from opening up to and committing to relationships with others.
And laughter will be enough to ease those anxieties.
This.
Yes, Brad knows, he said just that. You should watch the video before commenting.
@@Cosmo-Kramer I don’t think there are rules to commenting.
@@TheFairyintheFishBowl Not rules, but an expectation of courtesy to not waste people's time with useless clutter such as his answering Brad's initial confusion over something that Brad minutes later figured out on his own.
People have fears, and they resist letting anyone in. Especially anyone who tries to get serious! If you want to get to someone who is a prisoner of their fears, begin by keeping it light, fun, non-serious!
Laughter is the key to their heart!
So well put d Howard
Laughter works like a charm!
Brad was on to something when he said this song has a "Woodstock vibe." CSN&Y played this as their first song of their set at the Woodstock Festival, in a "legendary" performance. They were "scared shitless" according to Steven Stills, immediately at the end of the song. One of the best performances of the Woodstock film.
Focusing solely on the lyrics works for rap, but for rock it's like eating soup with a fork. You only get to hear these songs for the first time once, I like to see people get the most out of it:)
How many songs have you listened to for the first time and not really connected? It’s usually the 3rd or 4th listen that the magic comes out. sometimes it’s even more.
Brads tripping on the meaning, while Lex is just enjoying the fantastic harmonies.
What else is new. He drives me up a wall (he'll probably try to figure that out if he reads this !)
Agreed. At least he’s one of the few reactors to pronounce “Suite” correctly.
Brad is useless
As usual, Lex gets it as she says she’s just getting into the vibe and harmonies and not getting too much into the lyrics. As usual, Brad gets weighed down analyzing the lyrics too much. Just enjoy the sound. The harmonies are amazing.
She’s got an amazing feel for music as an art. Brad is very intellectual and cerebral, but I’m more impressed by Lex’s instinctive feel.
From wikipedia, "The title "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (a play on words for "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes") refers to Stephen Stills' former girlfriend, singer/songwriter Judy Collins, and the lyrics to most of the suite's sections consist of his thoughts about her and their imminent breakup."
This song was written by Stephen Stills, for Judy Collins. Stephen was doing the latin lyrics at the end. David Crosby and Graham Nash were the backup high harmonies. Neil Young hadn't joined them yet. This song is so tight, both in harmonies and instrumentation. They did it their first gig together at Woodstock. Stephen was with Buffalo Springfield, David Crosby was with the Byrds, and Graham Nash with the Hollies. They're all tremendous singers with great ranges. All three were lead singers in their own right, and they found the class, desire and patience to not always be the center of the song, which is one reason their harmonies were always so incredible. Good pick. Try one of theirs about the end of the world, Wooden Ships.
written like a man that knows his rock n roll history. Yeah brother.
I think it's fair to say that most of us who were around in 1969-70 (I was in my 20s) regarded the CSN debut album as among our favorites, if not THE favorite, at that time. It's so good from its opening track to the end.
Yes! I like the three of them much better without Neil Young.
@@skyepuppy7763 A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow!
Still one of my all time favorite albums!
some of the best harmonies ever recorded..
Man, to be a twenty-something hanging out in Laurel Canyon in the late-60s would have been epic.
Totally. I feel the same way about mid-60s San Francisco too
It was already mentioned, but this is a song about the relationship between Stephen Stills and Judy Collins. Her star was on a rapid rise as his was just starting. The references to specific days was Stills way of mocking the time constraints she was putting on their relationship. Also... Definite Woodstock vibe, CSN preformed this song in the middle of the night there.
That Woodstock gig wasn't good. They didn't have a band, the mix was crap, they hadn't yet meshed live because it was their first gig together (hot off a smash hit album). It sounded like a rushed last-minute campfire BS.
I've loved them more than any other band for half a century, so I'm not just throwing shade. (I found out recently they felt the same way.)
It's just been very frustrating trying to convince a different reaction couple to give them a REAL listen, instead of saying "meh" after hearing their pathetic Woodstock gig and never, ever listening to them again. For Pete's sake, listen to at least one song off the album that got them invited to Woodstock in the first place. ... Which is what these young folks just did.
One of the greatest examples of harmony in rock history. This was a rock supergroup,
A great group,!..With Neil Young (at times)..
@@KASPA-KEY check out 4 Way Street much better versions and not just the top 40 repackaged garbage
The title "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (a play on words for "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes") refers to Stephen Stills' former girlfriend, singer/songwriter Judy Collins, and the lyrics to most of the suite's sections consist of his thoughts about her and their imminent breakup. During a July 15, 2007 interview for the National Public Radio program All Things Considered, Stills revealed that Collins was present in the studio when the demo tapes were recorded and had advised him, "Don't stay in here [in the studio] all night now." Stills also commented that the breakup with Collins "was imminent. ... We were just a little too big for one house." Stills said that he liked parts of this demo version of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" better than the released version; the song and other demos of early Crosby, Stills and Nash songs were released commercially on the album Just Roll Tape.[3]
Collins and Stills had met in 1967 and dated for two years. In 1969, she was appearing in the New York Shakespeare Festival musical production of Peer Gynt and had fallen in love with her co-star Stacy Keach, eventually leaving Stills for him. Stills was devastated by the possible breakup and wrote the song as a response to his sadness. In a 2000 interview, Collins gave her impressions of when she first heard the song:
[Stephen] came to where I was singing one night on the West Coast and brought his guitar to the hotel and he sang me "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," the whole song. And of course it has lines in it that referred to my therapy. And so he wove that all together in this magnificent creation. So the legacy of our relationship is certainly in that song.
Collins elaborated in a 2017 interview:
Afterwards, we both cried - and then I said: "Oh, Stephen, it’s such a beautiful song. But it’s not winning me back." I’ve always understood that people have to write about their lives. Most of all, I felt the song was flattering and heartbreaking - for both of us. Neither one of us walked away from that relationship relieved. We were feeling like, "Whoa, what happened?”[4]
It also does a take on the musical form of a suite. Notice the four distinct sections.
It wasn't just a play on words, but several different songs to the same theme, fit together to make one masterpiece. A suite. 👍😏
You guys should react to more Crosby, Stills & Nash…
"Wooden Ships", "Woodstock", "Helplessly Hoping", "49 Bye-Byes", "Southern Cross", "Wasted On The Way", "Our House", "Teach Your Children", "Long Time Gone", "Got It Made", "Sea of Madness", "Delta", "Just a Song Before I Go"
🎸🤘
good songs. For Brad & Lex, Our House and Teach Your Children are CSN&Y (CSNY)
@@surlechapeau también "Woodstock"
The live version of Long Time Gone from 4 Way Street is awesome
Would love to see them react to that video w/CSN on Tom Jones. Ridiculous oneupsmanship, but fun.
Southern Cross is my favorite! Love the chorus.
The song is about Stills crush on Judy Collins from what I remember. Judy Collins had some great songs too.
CSN's harmonies are spot on. SO good.
I was so obsessed with this song the alternate tuning, the harmonies , so beautiful. A masterpiece.
That tuning would reappear on "4+20" and "Carry On". Stills is a brilliant musician!
The diversity of sounds running through this song is amazing love it.
CSN first and best recording. A true classic. I was a junior in High School when this song came out and saw them sing it on the film Woodstock and I was blown away. This song has 4 movements. He was singing about a blue eyed beauty Judy Collins after a painful break up. Best harmonies ever. Love the crescendo in Spanish at the end of the song.
Thanks Lex. This isn’t the kind of song to do a deep dive on the lyrics…during the song
anyway. This is a masterpiece of music and it’s best to just sit back and enjoy.
I disagree! I bought this album in 1969 at Tower Records. It was the first album that included a lyric sheet!! I sat down smoked a joint and put on my headphones! I listened to the entire album and was blown away reading the lyrics to every song! I was a huge Buffalo Springfield fan and Steven fan from the 3 Springfield albums! And had seen them live!
@@kona883 Very well, I can appreciate your personal history with the song. None-the-less the music is too beautiful to get hung up on the lyrics on a first listen. Go with the sonic gorgeousness of those harmonies and Stills's amazing and intricate guitar. When you're satiated with that, go back and appreciate the lyrics.
@@kona883 cool! Maybe you should suggest Brad smoke a fat one.
It’s a breakup song…
@@kona883 actually, there’s more poetry in this song than any music nowadays…
Ahh yes! My favorite from the Woodstock era. Teach Your Children and Helplessly Hoping, Southern Cross and of cause Woodstock. Stills wrote this about Judy Collins. She made it hard to be loved.
You can't take a protractor and analyze a Jackson Pollack. This song is absolutely about vibe and harmony.
The only reason Pollock was famous was because the CIA needed to say to Russia "See? Even our abstract artists are better than USSR's." He was a drunken hack who threw shit on a canvas.
@@chuckhunter77 Which is completely beside the point. But go off, bro..
Perfect analogy !
I understand the words, along with the sounds, makes incredible music
@@chuckhunter77 Wow, who's your source in the CIA? Everybody's a critic.
Fear shuts u down binds u up , Locks u up, and laughter and joy open it.
Brad actually dissects the lyrics and tries to get to the true meaning behind that. I know I sound old, but I doubt many young people of your gen take the time to get behind the words. You guys are so smart, and seeing you listen to these songs with fresh ears really is like hearing them for the first time myself.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love CSN’s “Marrakesh Express” and “Helplessly Hoping!!!! edit- just remembered seeing Stephen Stills open for Joan Armatrading in July 1986 on the pier!
Love "Marrakesh Express" .. My favourite CSN song ! .. I remember hearing that Graham Nash wrote it while still in The Hollies, but they knocked it back .. So on forming CSN, they immediately release it and it becomes a chart-topper .. BTW, my favourite GN song is his solo hit "Military Madness" .. Cheers, Wayne
Two of my favorites.
Helplessly Helping is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. IMHO
Damn spell check. Hoping not helping.
Saw them live right after Crosby got out of the Texas prison system and everytone was wondering if they still had the soaring harmonies even after so many miles and years.
They did. Very much. Glorious.
This is an iconic song by an iconic supergroup. Don’t overthink it! Just enjoy the harmonies!
Hopefully you will get to Southern Cross somewhere down the line. One of my favorite songs of all times.
I head this song as a child repeatedly and ever since had *no idea at all* what they lyrics.
I certainly got a vibe from it though. So it's interesting to now finally see the words all clearly.
This is an all-time classic. One of the sweet voices you noticed in the harmonies was Graham Nash, who was once a leading member of the British sixties band the Hollies. You have featured Hollies songs on this channel before.
These guys are some of the most talented and creative musicians ever. I'd recommend reacting to one of their live performances. Any song, it's all fantastic.
fear locks the heart away, but laughter is the key that unlocks the love.
I realize you guys look for meaning in each of these songs. That said, art is to be absorbed and that sometimes takes time. Don't get caught up in absolutely knowing what the song is about. Someone will tell you in the comments section anyways :)
Lots of great songs from CSNY! Hippy folk rock, great vocal harmonies. Very groovy. Nice late '60s/'70s band. Love the last parts of this song.
They ended up having good solo careers as well and other projects into the 1980s, 1990s.
Fear closes the heart to love.
Laughter opens the heart, like a smile.
Fear shuts her down and laughter breaks through!
The wonderful thing about songs is, sometimes it's the lyrics that a listener should focus hearing on and sometimes it's the music itself. The best songs are usually both lyrically and musically creative. When this song was written in the 70's, the motto was "free love'. I think the tune is about two band members falling for the same girl or even two different girls. One was blonde, blue-eyed folk singer Judy Collins and the other seems to be a dark-skinned Cuban beauty.
Brad, you need to remember that lyrics are poetry set to music. Poetry doesn't follow a straight line. It isn't linear. Some of it is very free-form. You can't expect a straight narrative from a song lyric, not every song tells a "story" in the way you seem to expect.
But it's interesting to hear your take on some of these songs, especially when juxtaposed with Lex's more instinctive take on the same song.
I'm with Lex most of the time.
I agree. Very well said Davester
Brad you had this one right out the gate! What had you confused was the status of the relationship, It's a love song to someone who has moved on.
One of the most beautifully harmonized songs of all time. Might even be the best. Awesome harmonizing.
CSN harmonies were all the rage 50 years ago. Brad couldn’t resist smiling at “you make it hard.” Double entendres galore. 😄
I still remember this song. The first time I heard this album was at my cool Aunt and Uncle's house. I was introduced to CSNY and bubble gum hash. Very awesome day.
I love Stills high falsetto part. Saw them do the Suite: at the Boston Garden in 1977. Stills held that high note for so long brought the house down.
fear is the lock, and laughter the key to your heart... he's saying fear is what makes a person lock their heart... and laughter is what unlocks it..
The harmony and bass line are sick in this
I'm sad I missed the live stream this was on. I'm the one who begged you forever to do "Carry On / Questions". This would be my #2 Choice. Another comment has an appropriate list of their biggest hits. I'd still love if you did "Bus Stop" by The Hollies for Graham Nash and "Eight Miles High" for David Crosby. You already heard Stephen Stills and Neil Young in "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.
Such a brilliant song, and the harmonies by these guys are unparalleled in rock music.
Stephan Stills wrote this for Judy Collins his girlfriend at the time who had gone to New York to star in a staging of Peer Gynt. Stills thought she was pulling away from him, and he was right, she was involved with her costar Stacy Keach.
@@mattdandersn Graham Nash’s song to his then co-habitee Joni Mitchell.
Stacy Keach? wasnt he the main cop in up in smoke?
@@alanneel1369 Sgt. Stadenko
@@alanneel1369 yep. And he played Mike Hammer .
Brought back memories of when this 73 year young hippie saw them live with Neal Young and also, Rory Gallagher (from Ireland) opened the concert in Chicago about 1978.They were as perfect live as they are on album ,believe me .Perfection!
Damn! Y'all gave me a completely new perspective on this song I've been hearing for 50-odd years! Love you guys-keep up the good work
The way Lexi is grooving, is EXACTLY how we listened to CSN in the 70's!! Sometimes with a Joint!
When our kids were little and this song came on the car radio, my wife and I would sing every word of this song. Now we do it when our grandkids are in the car.
Killer trio. With the addition of Neil Young. Their first big gig was Woodstock and this is the song they played.
These guys had some of the best harmony ever, even now its hard to find many that match them for nailing the harmonies. It was in that where they created some amazing music. Wooden Ships, Guinevere, Teach your children... they were untouchable.
The first time they played this song was at Woodstock. In case no one has mentioned it until now. In fact, they had just written it and it was the first time the played it anywhere in public.
Stephen Stills sang the lead part. He's the one singing in Spanish at the end. When they are doing more harmonies, usually Graham Nash sings the high harmonies.
Fear locks her heart and laughter is the key to opening her heart again.
Lex stuck that last line like an Olympic gymnast. Nailed it. Good editing.
I think he means that if either he or she is afraid, that locks them away from each other. But laughter opens up their hearts. This is a pleading, "please don't leave me, but I guess you're gone already" song.
When Brad started grinning the first time they said "And you make it hard" all I could think was Beavis and Butthead laughing "HUHUHUH he said hard HUHUHUH". Great reaction
Marrakesh Express is one of my faves. Their upbeat tunes and harmonizing are almost untouchable by groups of that time.
Fear of love..the lock,,,laughter the joy of life... the key
its about love and losing love and trying to make it work and ultimately letting it all play out as free spirits and life is so beautiful. "Better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all."
Yes, fear is the lock that he’s thinking she has on her heart, I guess. That’s how I interpret it. And then the laughter can open it up. Such a fantastic song I’ve known forever. Thanks guys 🎶 🎶
As mentioned below, a suite is a collection of related songs. Stephen Stills had attempted several time to write about his feelings and relationship with Judy Collins. While many of them had good sections none of them were completed to his satisfaction. So he took the good parts from 3 or 4 songs and put them together as a suite. Today it would probably be called a mashup.
One of the best vocals of all time...where ya been couch people?
She is afraid to commit , FEAR , relax , laugh , enjoy and it'll be alright ! Make it hard to wait around for your love ! That last voice was Stephen Stills !
The only reaction video we need is to see Lex smile and dance.
She’s so cute.
The lyrics are pure poetry. The meaning of the lyrics are different to each listener. Let it be your own interpretation, and yes the meaning changes every time you listen.
when you evaluate these songs, you need to remember that these were written for the times and the world we lived in THEN.
If you keep that in mind, you may not trip so much on the lyric. They really are pretty simple and usually mean what they say.
I love watching you young bloods hearing this music for the first time, it makes me remember the first times I heard these songs.
You two are a Joy and a Gift.
Fear keeps you from love.
And yes, 😆 it’s a great double entendre.
Lex is so right on to pick up on the harmonies; a hallmark of C, S & N.
The Spanish stuff at the end was Stephen Stills. The story (best I recall) about that section... They had written and sung all this stuff on one topic. They were like, "Hey, let's change the subject." Stills was like, "Let's change the language too."
Steve Stills was the lead singer and the songwriter. Bruce below has the story for you. This sounds the best, but you could have chosen to watch the video of them doing this song at Woodstock, only their second live performance as a group. CSN were from other well-known groups and you have heard them individually with those groups. They were the first to be called a "supergroup". Marakesh Express was their first hit in 1969 when the Woodstock Festival was. Their first two albums are very much classics.
On of my top five favourite bands. Great song, so well sung, amazing harmonies, absolutely stunning!!!😁🤞🤞🇬🇧
Everybody loved Judy Collins, she sings “Both Sides Now” written by genius Joni Mitchell.
A Suite are several song incorporated together. Hence Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, which are several songs about Judy Collins who was Steven Stills girlfriend. Judy Collins is also a singer and has incredible bright blue eyes.
"Fear is the lock, and laughter the key to your heart". For me this means that she was afraid of being hurt and that locked her heart to possibilities. Making her laugh and be comfortable is the key to melting the locked heart and letting someone in. Just my interpretation.
I get a kick out of these two. It's like looking at a painting and Brad wants to analyze it while Lex wants to enjoy it.😉
I can't wait until he gets hold of some complete nonsense, like a lot of Phish songs, and tries to get all analytical! I subscribe to Lex's approach!
@@tommathews3964 Yeah or some of the nonsense Jon Anderson sang about in Yes
@@AK99581 Absolutely! Everybody thinks a lot of those lyrics are so deep, because of the general "wizardry" of Yes, but so much of it is nonsense. Artistic license used to "find the rhyme"! Jon himself will tell you!
So love how Lex was like, I'm not paying attention, I'm just grooving,..thats that hippie groove,..I've seen footage of Woodstock,..and I know people were dropping acid, toking on weed,..but this music,..I know, just takes you away without the drugs,..gets you high anyway,..I was hooked on it as a kid,..no drugs,..no need,..I could so see ya'll at Woodstock, jamming and grooving just on the good vibes, the musical lift,..do keep going, people have already given suggestions,..I have favs,..Wooden Ships,

This was hippie music man! far out, wow, groovy, heavy, trippin'.
I can dig it..
My mother was Scottish and northern England she had a lot of crazy quotes between her and my grandparents, The way I was brought up and the mentality in the household another thing she would always say "That in which you fear the most will come back to haunt you" my dad who was from York England and died when I was six' left my mother to raise five boys on her own, she was tough as nails. I will never forget I was coming out of baseball practice and I got jumped by three guys from a rival school. I had a broken jaw two broken ribs and a concussion with the brain bleed. I thought I was gonna get some type of sympathy I was 16. All she told me was my older brother Warren would have taken that battle on and won. HARD CORE
Everything is great in this song: guitars, voices, bass, drums.
I had a Teacher when I was in 11th grade who would play this song every morning before class. We all loved it.
CSNY were incredible. Beautiful lyrics and beautiful instrumentation.
Check out "Almost cut my Hair". They must have been really stoned!
She was afraid to commit to Stills, hence the fear. He made it a long way with the laughter and good times but not far enough.
This song will never ever not be a trip.
Used to love singing the various parts of this song to work on harmonies. So much fun! Still catch myself doing this from time to time... LOL
Hardest in my opinion is the lowest, least intuitive. I do the same though. Listen close to Aerosmith's sweet emotion some time, there are 4 harmonies in the chorus.
Dig Weird Al's parody CSN/&Y mashup "Mission Statement" ----sheer hilarious genius...
Fear is the lock, the mind creates doubt and the key to laughter create a open heart in order to see your true potential.
Mama Cass Eliot from The Mama’s and the Papa’s had them sing together (CSN) for the first time in her kitchen at her house in Benedict Canyon in the hills just north of the Sunset Strip in Hollywood!!! She told them to get together. The Doors were the house band at the Whiskey A Go Go not far from there on Sunset. Amazing music from many bands came out of that area in those years!!!🎶👌🎵😁🎶😁🎵✌️
You got it Brad! Perfect interpretation! Hey Alex! ✌️❤️
You should definitely check out their song "The Southern Cross'. I'll bet that you'll love it. 😀
Love it....used to listen to this Vinyl with my buds. Just amazing.
My favorite CSNY and classic rock song. Right next to Ohio, great memories from this. Glad yall got to hear it.
Fear of getting hurt, locks her heart, locks him out. Laughter, and fun, relaxes her and opens her up to him. Great reaction. Southern Cross is another great one to review.
Sounds like Woodstock era (lol) ... they played this at Woodstock!
