Interesting comments about the gunmakers who had financial difficulties because of non payment. I have a photo of the ledger showing the purchase of my 1863 Purdey. The purchaser, a solicitor, got a 10% discount for paying cash.
Simon is always fun to watch. Super enthusiastic, great orator and story teller. Boss has such an interesting history. Thanks everyone, great instalment.
Bravo, once again you connect with the intellect of the wing shooter! Boss & Co is a scholarly work, not only the history of Boss but of the development of the shotgun. I started watching British shooting shows, in the states, with the likes of Dave Carrie, Andy Crowe, etc. However, they have taken the sport only so far. You, my friend, are taking the explanation of shooting to a higher level. I really enjoy you discussions with Ed Solomons and the chap that worked with you on Boss. I am looking forward to more Boss like productions.
JC. The content and quality of your content (I include Sasha in this) is going from strength to strength. Simon is a star and your relationship with Holts is outstanding. 👏👏👏
Super cool video! Two thumbs up for Boss & Co. , I presently own and shoot a 1928 Boss with 29" barrels. It has it's original oak and leather case and was imported here to the U.S. in 1928. It has the original owner's address in ink wrote on the front lid.
Totally enjoyable and fascinating. I have always been in awe of the artisans and skills of the craftsmen that had the ability to make such wonderful pieces of engineering delight. The people who had the vision the concept and the ability to communicate to the gunsmiths what they desired in the manufacturing process is beyond belief. precision engineering with a file. Brilliance indeed! Thanks for another wonderful insight into this fascinating subject. Truly appreciated!!!
Absolutely wonderful video. Thanks to both of you. Just a terrifically informative video not just on Boss but really touching the history of the London gun.
"All the best ideas happen over a beer." That is reminiscent of Ralph Klein, former Premier of Alberta who said he heard more good ideas listening to the ordinary working men at the bar of the St. Louis Hotel than he ever did in caucus meetings.
I didn't think i liked history. This was a fantastic little story and discovery into the world of trade, smithing and life around the trade, not just the Boss guns. Thank you. Every day is a school day indeed. I find even more reverence with my 130quid Greener Side by side, which truth be told, was bought through the influence of both Simon and TGS. Keep up the good work all.
I have been lucky to have shot a Boss side by side for a drive on pheasants, it was 1 of a pair, and it just felt like no other side by side I'd ever picked up, it felt alive, just very special, my favourite gun maker, there's still a blank space in my cabinet............1 day, it will appear!!!
The fit to the shooter and the dynamics when handled are what the difference between a bespoke gun and a massed produced gun . It must be experienced .
Hello TGS and Holts, I have found this video very interesting but I do have one question for you both, what was the first calibre of shotgun produced and what calibres followed?
And still today there are those who do not want to pay their bills even when they are required to pay a 50% deposit when ordering a custom rifle. I have one now that I built and engraved and the client refused to pay the balance and will not answer inquiries. His 30 days was up a while back so I have a custom rifle available for half the price of what a new one would cost. Excellent video on the history of Boss best guns.
Great video, but I was disappointed when discussion of the SxSxS gun was cut off. Otherwise, it's wonderful what you can buy with suitcases full of money.
On a tragic note, upon Hemingway‘s death it was reported that the famous author had taken his life with a Boss. Later investigations revealed that it was, in fact, a Scott SxS.
I would very much like to hear your opinion on the future of classic English game guns as we unfortunately head inevitably towards steel cartridges for game shooting. I think your insight would make a good episode.
would be great to do this will all of the English and Scottish gun makers. I have just bought a 1950's William Powell and there is just no much around on them
No adverts in 1800 -1850 ?????? The front pages of the newspapers at that time would have them on. They needed the revenue from the advertisers to offset the high cost of printing. The advertisers in return wanted maximum audience for their outlay.
I wonder.... in real-world use is there as much go as there is show? Fancy wood and engraving don't impress me... a gun that fits and works does. Example -Perazzi - the trigger assembly is easy to remove. A good thing, since they have a habit of mainspring failure. I have a Winchester model 12 with countless thousands of rounds through it, and never a hiccup. It's not pretty, but it WORKS.
when you call them the worlds best gunmaker i think you should talk to some of their customers too. that is a pretty tall order to prove that they are the best in the world. i really doubt it.
Simon needs to bring out an audio book, seriously well researched and informed authority.
Written ,illustrated ,hard bound book

Best 30 mins of viewing for a long time, hung on every word.Boss ‘rose and scroll’ can’t beat it.
Absolutely brilliant. Have Simon make similar programs about Woodward, Stephen Grant and some of his favourite makers.

Great video. Should do one like this on all the English and Scottish gunmakers to help keep the history alive for future generations.
That was very informative and very enjoyable, lots more like this please Gentlemen
Boss & co are just a different level to the rest out there !
This the sixth time I have watched this in 3 days. Fantastic!
Very interesting! A few times, I even rewound it a bit, and no, I wasn't napping.

Simply wonderful ,great video John .
Excellent education from Simon on the history of these stunning guns.
Very interesting about the sourcing of the pieces of the guns.
I always enjoy looking at true art. Their guns are definitely that. Thanks
it would be nice to go for a pint with Jonny and Simon, only trouble is all I could contribute to any conversation is "me like bang stick" 🤣🤣🤣
Fabulous start of a hopefully new series

Very enjoyable watch, amazing Gunsmithing and great pieces of history.
Guys keep up the hard work 👍

That was great, any plans for more English gun maker histories?
Nice insights and history of these beautiful arms
On a tragic note, upon Hemingway‘s death it was reported that the famous author had taken his life with a Boss. Later investigations revealed that it was, in fact, a Scott SxS.
You can’t talk about Boss & Co with an unironed shirt, JC. Great vid though! 😎
Don’t 🙄 🥺
Boss should have an iron on site
Your lucky he had his trousers on 🤣🤣🤣
Top notch video
Excellent

Would love to see you guys do a review of the new RFM side by sides
Can you just visit Holt's or do you need an appointment? Thinking of escaping the next time we take the kids to Dersingham 🤣
Simon is very very knowledgeable very smart gentleman.

Very nice review and good info, makers of best videos only😊👍. What is the name of the first song from the start of the video? Best regards, guys!
I will check through the computer and get you a name

Sache hold the text up for a couple more seconds, there's a reason I shoot shotguns 😉🤣
When did Hugo join the company?
22:30 👍👍👍👌

It seems like Steve Jobs was the reincarnation of John Robertson.
🤔 there are a lot is similarities
Discerning clients, where money is no object and what the best, shop at Boss.......
Well thats not me anyways 😢

Just goes to show age is not everything ; )
