The .45 ACP round was developed due to a lack of stopping power experienced in the Moro Rebellion using the .38 Long Colt. This experience and the Thompson-LaGarde Tests of 1904 led the Army and the Cavalry to decide a minimum of .45 caliber was required in a new handgun.

Wrong, the .45's birth is a carry over from the Colt Dragoon and Army models. Then the 1873 45 Colt was to match that performance. The .45 ACP was to match that original performance because the .38 Long Colt proved to be very inadequate during the Philippine Insurrection.
