I like how you edited out Kirk;s commercial. Good edit. I actually like Kirk even better than Michael(especially later on when he got really whiney), but it was a clean edit.
Once, in the 80's I was riding in a car with my mother, I was in my 20s. We got stuck in a traffic jam, not moving at all. I picked up a newspaper and saw a picture of Newhart. Just looking at his picture I started to laugh, my mother saw it and started to laugh, we laughed until our eyes were watering. No article. Just a picture of Newhart in a suit looking worried.
Such a brilliant show. Michael Harris is a wonderful character. I meet many people like him (and like Stephanie). The existence of this show demonstrates I'm not alone in my viewpoints. the "Try Smiling" episode where the townsfolk swallow up Michael's simple-minded message (in which he totally believes for a while himself, not because it makes sense, but because it sells for a while), wonderfully demonstrates a Kool-aid swallowing tendency in much of the history of the US. And other countries too. And it is easy to identify with Bob's frustration at his inability to demonstrate the fatuousness of the whole phenomenon to the townsfolk. And then the entire town and Michael turn on a dime and don't believe it anymore and that's that! No reasoning, just another snap emotional reaction of a group.
Bob Newhart basically repackaged 'Green Acres' in Vermont. It is a complete reversal of reality where the one sane, normal person lives amongst idiots but that one sane, normal person is in fact so out of touch with the community that the community seems likes idiots in the telling of stories from his point of view. Imagine if the stories were given to us from the community point of view; I'm sure Bob (and Mr. Douglas) would look like the fatuous kool aid swallowing, self absorbed person he really is... and the people who, outside the story, that can relate to Bob are too. Marshal McLuhan would be very proud to know that you missed the message of the medium. hubris at it's finest
A fine actor. You have to know his gritty, New York upbringing, suffering from bipolar disorder with a rage-filled father and alcoholic mother ( they loved each other, but were totally mismatched) to see what a creation the Michael Harris character is - a surface-obsessed well-off wasp who seems never to have had a real problem in his life. But Peter knew life, knew his job, and was an ok guy. Newhart knew talent when he saw it.
Believe it or not, this does actually happen. I was hired for the afternoon shift at a radio station before the current guy was given his notice. I desperately needed the job but I felt like the lowest form of scum for taking the job of a guy I only just met.
I like how the guest seems stilted and not quite connected. “ And yes, the green rain forest..” as though he was answering some question that would naturally pop into the listeners mind. It didn’t. Then we find why he is so stilted. I suspected something, but not that. Newhart was a comic genius!
Can anyone name the actor who played the 'director' in this, and what else he did? I'm guessing that the 'Michael Harris' (named in another comment ) played the writer. Both rising to Newhart's level here, and worth knowing, please..

Michael's persona has much in common with the Alastair character in the Britcom "As Time Goes By" but Alastair is a much better and more moral and decent person. However, the shallowness and deft manipulativeness exist in both. Michael is hands down more shallow.
