What I love about this sketch is that it’s not packed with jokes. It’s all about the performances of the actors.

Me too - I’m only 69...for a few months..and listened avidly with a good friend, John McCraken, in Kuwait, as a child - Newhart’s humor being unique, whether as a junior mathematician or one allowed to drive at such a tender age! The bus drivers’ school and L class tore us to bits!

Bob was so well known by this time, everyone knew what to expect from his character. He has his audience wound up so tight that one eyebrow twitch and they/we fall over laughing. And Bob (2020) is STILL doing it. What a career.

Bob Newhart, brilliant dead pan comedian. I loved Newhart, happy memories of the show as family used to vacation in Cape Cd and the opening credits of the show used to really remind me of New England. Loved the theme tune and the cat saying meow at the end!

I agree this series had the best closing scene. Think that was sometime after the shower scene when Bobby Ewing came back from the dead. Also love the "just stop it" routine. Bob's specialty early on was always the one sided conversation, where you only heard his side, as in a phone call.

    • @digalittle

TV trivia. The kitten at the end was trademark of MTM (Mary Tyler Moore) productions. The kitten was homage to MGM’s Leo the lion.

Some more TV trivia involving Mimsy, the MTM cat... When the segment for Mimsy to "meow" was being shot, they couldn't for love nor money get Mimsy to make a sound. The best they could do was to take footage of him yawning, run it backwards and insert the sound effect of a cat's meow. That ended up being the base footage used as their logo, seen at the end of all of their productions. Newhart featured Bob (as Dick) saying "Meow" in place of the cat's meow sound effect. Hill Street Blues featured a policeman's cap superimposed onto Mimsy's head, as if he were a feline officer. I don't remember WKRP having anything special added to the MTM logo at the close of their show credits, but other MTM productions often would modify the base footage with something to be partially relevant to that particular show.

I agree. That was one of THE best of this particular series. All the cowboys were the exact opposite of what he was expecting. They didn't eat beans off of a tin plate - they had a salad bar. Really good. The BEST was the very last episode when Suzanne Pleshette guest-starred. Bob Newhart woke up back in their familiar old apartment in Chicago - The whole Vermont series had been a crazy dream. Wonderful.

For some reason I had it in my head that the first two seasons with Kirk were the only ones that were funny, but this clip has proven me very wrong. I was literally laughing out loud while watching! The obnoxious ring of that phone only adds to the hilarity; thank you for sharing this!

The first two seasons with Kirk actually almost killed the show because it wasn't all that funny and they were struggling to figure out what the show was. ...and a fair evocation of what local public-affairs TV was like before the digital age.
(If you're above a certain age, you almost certainly had a daily show on your local station something like this.)
I hosted a weekly show on my college TV station in Ohio, which went out to the entire community of Marietta, called "Anything Goes!"
Today, local-access cable fills that void:

@xxlesslikeitsmathxx Actually, Newhart has had a bit of a resurgence. Since 2001, he has worked on a variety of shows, doing a memorable turn on ER, as well as Desperate Housewives and The Librarian.
Like Woody Allen, he didn't record much (Allen made three albums, Newhart made seven), but what he left on LP alone would be the stuff of legend. More of "Newhart" on DVD, I say!

I think they called this Newhart because the other one (in Chicago when he was married to Emily) was the Bob Newhart show. I live in VT and Vermonters loved this show, even though it was really making fun of them LOL I know the last show were he woke up still married to Emily and the whole VT thing was a dream was genius. I saw it on a list of top tv show endings it was #1 There is also a You Tube clip of the first show Larry, Darrell and Darrell were in (2nd episode)so funny
