  • This is a review of a Voskhod, teflon coated, stainless steel razor blade, made in Russia. I made a mistake, in the video, saying it is made of carbon steel. It's performance is reviewed in a Chinese Futur, the Ming Shi Shaver 2000s; a Merkur 34c HD and in the razor used for today's shave: a vintage Gillette Old Type single ring de razor manufactured between 1928 and 1935. Today's shaving soap is the Proraso White containing green tea, oatmeal and thyme and the shave is nicely finished off with a drop of Nivea sensitive balm and a drop of Proraso Menthol and Eucalyptus aftershave. This is a great blade.

    Voshkod are a great blade. I get 2 weeks shaving from a single blade. Nivea Sensitive aftershave balm is excellent. I use the Praraso red shaving cream which works a treat with my Kent silver tip badger brush. A fantastic shaving experience!

    Voskhod blades work great for head shave, but the first beard shave pass is always tuggy for me. The second and third passes go very smoothly and I end up with a good shave. No problems with J-hooks either. Thanks for nice videos and greetings from Finland!

      Hello Aaro. Thank you very much for getting in touch from Finland. That's fantastic. I'm really pleased you like my videos. That's interesting that Voshkods tug a bit on the first beard shave pass. I must admit I don't have heavy stubble. Are there any famous Finnish safety razors?

    Great review!!! I recently ordered 100 of the Astra SP (green box) and really like them. They are plenty sharp and still very smooth although I find 4 uses are about all I want to try and get before things get a little uncomfortable. The razor that seems to like them best is the 69 Super Speed. The late 40's ball end Tech likes them as well and is my daily go to when traveling. I have been interested in trying the Voskhod blades and thanks to your recommendation definitely will. May you always get fresh clean shaves and Thanks again!

      Hey , Joe. Thank you very much. I need to try out some Astra blades, again; I have plenty but I shaved with one when I started with a de razor and had a rotten shave. So many people rate them highly, so I'm sure it was just me or perhaps it just didn't match up very well with the razor I used. It's funny how that happens. I love the Sputnik blades as well as the Voshkods. They are from a different factory (Gillette) but they are also Teflon coated and I find both to be very good. There are so many to choose from 😃 Have a great week.

    Talk about COINCIDENCES and GREAT FIRST IMPRESSIONS! I just discovered your channel and this is the first video that I've seen. Meanwhile in my own shaves I have been using Rapira Super Swedish and Voskhod in the last 2 shaves. I am HUGE fan of these blades and find they work in every razor. Likewise, I've discovered , the same, as you that in a more aggressive razor(in my case a Yuma)any of these Russian Blades work well and generally irritation free.
    Probably, the most comfortable shaves(and really that is debatable)I've had with have been in a Schick Krona and Gillette Knack. But the kicker is: I have a several Russian Razors and the Voskhod and Landas have performed superbly!
    I have used in a Russian twist to open Astra 501 which I believe was actually built in Czechoslovakia and in a definitely Russian made Leningrad Bakelite 3 piece razor. Sometimes I go all out and use Russian Apple Blossom or Viking Shave creams with the Russian blades/razors. I only need a Russian after shave to complete the adventure.
    I am glad to have found your channel!!!

      Hi. I'm very pleased that I have made such a good first impression. They are really good razor blades. I have a Gillette Slim Twist which I believe is the same razor as a Gillette Knack; I will look forward to using it now and, of course, will let everyone know how I find shaving with it. I have never tried any Russian shaving soap or aftershave, not yet anyway! I'm glad you enjoyed watching my video and thank you for taking the time to write to me; it lets me know that I'm doing something right. Have a great day. Kind regards.

      You can't beat a vintage Gillette. As you know. I'd really like to get my British Goodwill re-plated; it is an amazing shave! It takes a Voskhod very well. Long term review. These Voskhod blades work wonderfully in my Merkur 510, Yaqi double-sided, and Yaqi slant-side. In the Yaqi Slant Blade, very aggressive. Be careful, but a really close shave. No regrets. Always a close shave. Saved me during COVID. Mask fitting paramount. Un-Vaxxed.

    Holy Shit! This blade is comparable to the Merkur blade that came with my Merkur Progress razor! I did place a small dish and tissue and peanut oil nearby to avoid any oxidation of the blade. A simple dip on both blades. A carbon steel blade will always outlast any stainless steel blade. Secondly, a 'Cracking Good Price'. I just bought 100 blades for $10 american! YOU'VE GOT MY ATTENTION!!... Keep up the good work!

      Hey buddy. Those Voshkods are brilliant blades. I know I said in the video that they are carbon steel but I'm not sure they are, now. I've not ever had one go rusty even if I just rinse and leave it, and you know how quickly carbon steel does rust. I'll have to look into that again. AnywY, it's good to read that you liked them. All the best to you. 👍

    My favourite blade. I use them with the ming shi adjustable futur clone. It works great and get no nicks at 2.5 or 3 setting. I get a super smooth shave. My stubble is quite coarse. Derbys are too mild for me and the personna are too sharp and I sometimes get nicks.

    Another Voskhod fan here. I've purchased over 400 to share between my son and myself. You might also like Shark Super Stainless. They're great, and very inexpensive shipped out from Turkey, although the blades are from Lord in Egypt, I believe. My favourite Russian Gillettes have to be the silver blues. Any of those blades is fantastic, although the Gillettes are a bit pricier but they last me a week of shaves, so not too bad really.

      I used to think my favorite Gillettes out of the St. Petersburg plant in Russia were the GSB's or the 7 O'Clock Yellows, but the Polsilver Super Iridium's have become my favorite for their combination of smoothness and sharpness. I also get 5 to 7 shaves from each one which is about what I get from a GSB. I get my most shaves per blade from the German made Wilkinson's I usually get 7 to 10 per blade from those and one even gave me 20 shaves.
      I like the Voskhod's and Astras, too but I usually don't get more than 5 shaves per blade with those.

I seem to find that I get some of my best shaves from vintage SE razors. I have a few including a Gem Brooklyn, a Gem Damaskeene and Gem Micromatic. Excellent shaves. That's a great question, Michael. I have never heard of any Russian SE blades, perhaps someone, with more knowledge, might be able to add to this comment. I agree, SE razors do provide a really good shave. I have a Gem G-bar and Bullet Tip and also an Ever Ready, whose name momentarily escapes me as I've only had a few hours sleep. So far, I really like the DE blades from this particular factory. The Rapira Swedish Supersteel are also great and I can't wait to try one in the Merkur 34c. Thank you, my friend.

    Sry for far belated reply as viewed video on 14/5/18 only. My 'most' goto blades KAI, Feather, Polsilver, Gilette Silverblue, Muehle, Astra green. The priority razors Fatboy, Mergress (short), Futur, DE89, Rockwell 6c, Shavecraft 102, R41, 34c. Using all blades in all razors, so experience different shaves constantly. I'm just shaving, not aiming for ultra BBS all the time, no skin can take that... Together with all choices of soaps, razors n blades, results are infinitely, making this hobby so interesting in the challenge to find the 'best combination'. Guess an impossible task... but one can come near to it. Cheers.

    I am about to try out one of these blades and for my sensitive areas I hope it works out. By the by I like to use Thayers Medicated anti pain witch hazel after a shave as I find it is just the greatest stuff then of course the good Nivea stuff like you use.

      @FriendshipShaving  5 років тому

      I think they are great blades, so I hope they work out for you. For some reason witch hazel brings me out in lots of sore bumps. It's strange because I think there is witch hazel in Nivea but it's when I use the pure stuff I get issues. It took me ages to work out what it was.

    Hello mate this is the only other Russian blade I haven't tried yet but if it is anything like the Rapira LUX or Rapira Swedish Steel then it will do me. I also like the Nivea balm to and I add a drop or two of an essential oil like patchouli or sandalwood to the bottle for an aftershave too. I meant to mention that I cannot source an old Gillette razor out here in Australia but I do have my beautiful Feather AS-D2 one to compenste (amongst others).

      Hi John. I love the Voskhods but I'll have to get some more Plat LUX. Your idea of adding essential oil to the Nivea is really good. It's a bit of a pain but needs must 😃 Take care mate.

    It's good to watch this video about Voskhod blade and your opinion about it. Recently while using Voskhod blade, I was fascinated at the feeling of softness and metal feeling free, so clean shave with it at first 2 times(first with Rockwell 6C, 2nd with Merkur 34C). However when I used the voskhod blade 3rd times with my low quality Dorco tto razor, I had cuts snd bleeding, the same voskhod was different this time, tugging and pulling. Others say vodkhod has low durability, so after use 2 times, they dispose it. What is your opinion of the voskhod blade's lifespan? How many times do you use it and dispose it?

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  4 роки тому +1

      Hi. I used to love Voshkod; they were an easy six shave blade. However, I've had some really bad Voskhod blades over the past few months, bought from eBay, so much so, that it put me off buying them altogether. I was unsure whether they were forged or if the quality within the factory had just dropped significantly.
      The Voskhod.eu website, where I used to buy my blades, direct from the factory, have been out of stock for a really long time, now. I wonder if the factory is closing down. So, nowaday I tend to use the Gillettte 7 o'clock black, which I feel is similar, even though the coating is different.

When I match them with Voskhod or Ladas they feel harsh and aggressive. Place the same blade in a Gillette or Schick of the same Era and they feel smooth. I don't know why...

      GSB's, the 7 O'Clocks (Green, Yellow and Black), Polsilver, Astra, Permasharp, Platinum, and Nacet are all made out of the same Gillette factory in St. Petersburg, Russia. While Energizer still owns the Wilkinson blade that's made in
      Germany, Gillette makes a Wilkinson blade in India (and perhaps China) as well that's sold in a cardboard pack (as opposed to the plastic pack for the Wilkinson's made in Germany).

      @FriendshipShaving  6 років тому

      Hi Sebastian. It's usually razors that are referred to in terms of their aggression: for example, a Voskhod razor blade will be more aggressive in a Mühle R41 than in a Mühle R89 because the R41 is known to be quite an aggressive razor. I like the Voskhod blades; I find them to be sharp but cushioned because of the coating. I hope that helps.

      How ironic is it that the company that made the best DE razors still makes the best DE razor blades but won't officially import or distribute most of them in the USA? There's one high priced pack being sold now in the Walgreens chain that's based on the Gillette Platinum (I think). Do any UK drugstore chains carry Gillette DE blades in single packs or bulk, or do you have to go to the specialty shaving stores to buy them?

      See my other comment about all the blades made by Gillette out of their St. Petersburg plant. One to note is Polsilver Super Iridium (the Polsilver Stainless Steel ones were made by their previous owner in Poland, i think). Gillette also used to make Rotbart blades but they were discontinued a few years ago.
      A discussion by a company rep of the different specs for all their blades made out of the same plant would be very interesting.

      It's very difficult now, in any retail chain to be able to buy anything other than the Gillette multi-blade cartridges. Occasionally, you might see a pack of blades but it would mostly be in a small independent chemist and these are being bought out by the big chains. The internet seems to be the place to buy these days.

      That is a difficult question. My Mühle R41 holds the blade perfectly well - I have had no problems. I find that most of the Merkur razors give a mild shave. Vodkhods did what? Wash your dirty mouth out 😜👍 It fascinates me that our skin makes a blade behave in a completely different way for two people. Add that to the same blade working better with one razor than another - it's strange how that happens. I don't get it. Nacets are quite nice.

    • @guitarzarfun
      @guitarzarfun 6 років тому +1

      Yeah I don't get how it works. I bought 100 of the Voshkods after all the online shine they got..I think I made it through about 5 of them and had to jump ship. sold em off. Tried them in a Weber, A 2nd version stainless Rockwell 6s, a 40's Gillette Open comb and a cheap Lord. Felt like they forgot to put an edge on em! Some of the other popular blades were the same way. Gillette silver blues get tons of love but felt about the same to me. Feathers had the strange ability to cut my skin up while simultaneously not giving me as close a shave as a Nacet...and were only good for 3 shaves tops. weird. Polsilvers were pretty good, not quite as good as Nacets, but way more expensive. Nacets were the cream of a huge crop of blades i tried. Everything from Polsilver super iridiums, feathers,Kai, crystals and a slew of others.They slide effortlessly and quietly through my wire whiskers. My trusty Astra greens fell off the throne. Nacets seems considerably sharper and last longer than Astras but I still like 'em. Crystals were almost as sharp as Nacets ( and last pretty good) but not quite there & would probably be my #2 just because they are fairly cheap in bulk, Astras greenies are my #3 not quite as sharp as Crystals and noticeably less keen than Nacets but still a good workhorse blade really mainly cuz you can get 'em cheap and they don't tug much & will give 4 good rounds.
