Most ships have a sonar that they can use to detect cover, seaweed, fish and wrecked ships. Think of the ocean as a vast desert, with oasis's being anything you can detect on the sonar. Thats where the fish are, hiding in shipwrecks, etc

I just watched another video of his where he showed the kill switch key was attached to his swim wear. Although that was when he was close enough to the instrument panel that he could use his left foot for throttle and steering.
