I found some interesting things playing with our MOPA when we got it, like going over a color a second time can give a completely different color. It's fun and frustrating at the same time

The best Fiber Laser for me would be a 100W JPT MOPA with an Ezcad3 board and 2.5D motorized Z Axis! .... But those look to be about $13,000 lol. Oh well, I can dream.
LightBurn now supports 2.5D height map engraving using only an Ezcad 2 board which is about $1000 cheaper than the Ez3 boards that advertise supporting it natively. So.... $12,000 lol? Probably not much better.

Hi, I need some help. I read that there are two models of the JPT 60W MOPA lasers, the 'economy version' YDFLP-E-60-M7-M-R and the 'full power' version YDFLP-60-M7-M-R, the first having a 1.5mJ pulse energy, the full version is rated at 2mJ. Some reviewers suggest to avoid the 'cheap, economy' version, or at least be aware of them.
My question, what do we miss with having 'only' 1.5mJ instead of 2mJ ? How does the 100W model (with a specs of 1.5mJ only) compare to these? I am confused, why doesn't the pulse energy correlate to the wattage?
If you don't know why you would want one of the other you probably wouldn't notice the difference. The E-series sources from JPT have a little bit lower power at higher frequencies and aren't quite as good at cutting - not that you should be cutting on these machines anyway. It's really technical and the difference is marginal. For most applications the E-series is comparable.

Hey thank you for the video! I am trying to find out if the higher power you go, will the marking be accomplished faster? I am specifically comparing 20w MOPA to say 60w or 80w. I do not need depth at all, just would love to know if my production speed of many parts might increase with a higher wattage. Thanks!

Can I get your opinion? I need a laser engraver to engrave metal on rifles and handguns. Maybe car rims if needed. But I wanna be able to use this for small hobbies as well for example; wood, glass, plastic. What would be the best bang for the buck in this brand and laser watt for what I need?
Is there a practical difference between the 60w and the 100w mopa lasers for most users?
Would you suggest 60W for a small business where speed matters? Or is 20W more than capable of the volume and work is not focused fill time using MOPA? I know these answers vary but the cost of the 60W is hard to justify for us right now.
Have you done a video on how to trace objects to mark (like you did on the knife)? I have searched but can't find anything other than people doing it without explanation.
Does the colour marking catch rust or corrosion after a certain period of time?
Some do, some don't. If done properly it shouldn't - typically the corrosion is due to the metal being ablated by the laser. Proper color marking wouldn't have any such effect on the surface.
I wonder about The Pop sound you heard. Was it the first time you turned it on?
Love your reviews. This may be my first laser. Fiber laser I mean. I’ve had a Glowforge for years and love it for the things it can do.

Color marking is only typically applicable to steel and titanium.

Will be my first ever high cost anything (Other than a car) See I'd rather buy the higher priced unit and more powerful laser than start at the bottom and maybe get disappointed and have to fork out more on another one, just jumping in the deep end is better cause I'll learn fast :) Cheers L.E

Hello, I really enjoyed this presentation.
This type of laser is a machine that I have always wanted but with the fear of getting started.
But do you recommend to start laser engraving with a diode machine, to have a faster learning and amortization then with this machine? Or is it more of a waste of time?

Is a $300 machine a good compromise to start with?
Diode lasers are always a great way to "test the waters' so to speak, but they're different machines. Diodes really only work well with organics like wood and leather. As long as you understand the differences I think diode lasers are an AWESOME start for beginners and we review a lot of great ones that are inexpensive on the channel. It's all relative. Considering where competitors are priced, what similar machines cost, and how far prices have come down in the last five years for a piece of equipment with these capabilities I'd argue it is. If it was a $6800 Electric Vehicle no one would bat an eye for the same reasons.
Before the rise of the Chinese imports. A machine like this would have cost 80k at least. People don't know how good we have it now a days.
Would this laser be strong enough to cut ports in a pistol slide ?
I've not tried specifically doing ports on a slide (don't really have a reference for thickness on one either), but I've done some rough cut outs using it with the 110 lens on ~3mm thick stainless steel. It takes fine tuning to get good results in a reasonable time as well, but hasn't really been something we've dug too much into specifically.
so a fiber laser will burn the metal at different rates so that the result is various hues in the appearance? How does that work? Does the frequency setting control this? I have a huge CO2 laser and am considering a fiber laser.
Yes you are correct, MOPA fiber laser speed, frequency, Q pulse all can be adjusted then do different apperaance.

Power source popped sounds okay if you have a back up but 3-5 days down would cause huge problems for a small shop

Agreed, 3-5 days could be problematic depending on workload and expected turnaround for client projects, but downtime happens sometimes even under the best circumstances. In all honesty, I expected the shipment to be more like 2 weeks coming from around the world, so about half a week I was more than happy with. That said, PSU failures happen regardless of brand, and from what I saw when looking through the power supply, it seemed decently built so added to the unexpected circumstances a bit. While I'm not an electrician/engineer by any means, I would say the build quality and components looked pretty on par with a PSU from Meanwell (which i just bought a few of to get my co2 up and running after a long downtime to get it wired for 110 instead of 220), which is a rather highly regarded manufacturer. The Wisely PSU's are branded as a Wisely (i'm not sure if they build them in house or if they are contracted elsewhere), but seem pretty stout. I thought I might have had an electrical issue in the shop, so I did have an electrician out to check my voltages and wiring for my shop circuits, everything checked out solid so maybe just an oddity or part of that low average failure rate. Either way, if anything changes or any failures occur, I will of course report back with an update video. I plan on doing a long term usage update in the future with any findings/changes after it is thoroughly used and gone through a lot more testing and power cycles :D

Question, is there anything a 60W MOPA laser cannot do vs a 50W non-MOPA (JPT LP)? I'm looking at both a 60W MOPA and a 50W JPT one, but trying to determine if there's some downside to the MOPA I'm missing, or if the MOPA is just added capability (i.e. color marking, etc.).
Nope, 60w MOPA can do all and more vs 50w JP.
Except nomal marking, MOPA laser special:
1) Color marking on stainless and titanium materials.
2) Black engraving on Anodized aluminum.
3) Black and fine marking on most plastic.

@@CalyoWiselyLaser hi, I'm considering getting this for my business. I need to etch about 100um in aluminium in 5x7mm area to prepare the surface for gluing. Also, in a larger area around this of 40x40mm I need to completely burn away any oil without marking the metal. Can I use this laser for both cleaning and ablation like so, or is it not possible to clean off the oil without marking the metal?

He made the disclosure, so I'm not sure what else you expect from a UA-cam review channel. Even 'unpaid' channels have incentives to be kind to manufacturers, if they hope to continue receiving review units. But I DO agree it is a bit disingenuous to say it is 'unpaid' when one is being compensated with goods valued at thousands of dollars, or to gloss over the symbiotic relationship between manufacturers and social media "influencers".
Hey Terry! Before Alex started doing these types of videos - I agreed with your opinion. Now that I manage the biz side of our UA-cam channel, I know a bit more. At least here in the US, each machine we take should be taxed as income. Because of this, we definitely do not take every item offered to us for review, because it's not a free for all. I'm sure you'll still maintain that opinion, but it's definitely influenced mine when I'm watching reviews.
When we say unpaid, it's referring to the fact that we don't take cash for a positive review. I know that *happens* on a variety of UA-cam channels and it's something we've committed to not to engage in.

At the time, shipping was free. Their machines and shipping deals sometimes change. You'll need to check the listing or message them for a quote. Depending on country, you'll still need to deal with customs charges, even if they cover the shipping to get it to you, so that is another cost factor to keep in mind.
