  • In which John Green teaches you about the Mexican-American War in the late 1840s and the expansion of the United States into the western end of North America. In this episode of Crash Course, US territory finally reaches from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific Ocean. After Oregon was secured from the UK and the southwest was ceded by Mexico, that is. Famous Americans abound in this episode, including James K Polk (Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump), Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, and Winfield Scott. You'll also learn about the California Gold Rush of 1848, and California's admission as a state, which necessitated the Compromise of 1850. Once more slavery is a crucial issue. Something is going to have to be done about slavery, I think. Maybe it will come to a head next week. Support CrashCourse on Patreon: / crashcourse

    The Mexican-American war was one of the wars I've had to study for myself because the history of that war wasn't even touched when I was in high school. Just WWI, WWII, the war in Korea, and the war in Vietnam (with a "side order" of the ridiculous "We Were Soldiers" American film).

    • @TheZombifiedFairy
      @TheZombifiedFairy 9 років тому +3

      ***** funny because now WWI, WWII, Korean and Vietnamese war are only touched on in today's school. I went to private school, so I learned about all of them, with an emphasis on WWII and Korean (mainly because at that school we choose what we liked to learn) and I started in the 1st grade. Now my daughter(8), the product of public school, was so lost when I taught her about Anne Frank and took her to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. I was so embarrassed I taught her about all of wars and current events a few months before we went to the Anne Frank house.

      I consider myself to be a German rather than Mexican. What you view as obvious is all on your perspective entitlement. The Invasion of Mexico is not the only history I study on my free time. I made myself aware of other historical events like the tragic death of one person that launched WWI, The Battle of Gettysburg, The Battle of Waterloo, The Battle of Stalingrad, the scorched earth policy that foiled the Napoleonic Invasion of Russia, (and yes) the US take over of Hawaii, so and so on.

    Hey Crash Course team. Love your work. Would like to point out here that the term "internal imperialism" at 1:02, is in itself a Manifest Destiny way of describing American expansion. America began as a 13 state union clustered on the Eastern seaboard and has since expanded to control more than twice the land that the Roman Empire controlled at its height. There was nothing internal about it. Also, unlike the Roman Empire, that expanded but left cultures alone as long as they paid taxes, the U.S. "union" wiped away peoples and cultures in front of it in the largest campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide known to human history as your video attests to when it speaks of the drop in California's Native population from 150,000 to 30,000 in 12 years (9:49). I appreciate all of the work that Crash Course does to bring knowledge to so many, and I hope that Crash Course U.S. History can make young Americans aware of this history so that we can choose how our country will wrestle with its implications and open wounds.

    It seems to me that everything in history is inevitable. Past events are set, and aren't going to change at this point. The Civil War was definitely inevitable by this time. We know this because the Civil War happened, and was very much related to the stuff we discuss in this video. Now, you could say nothing in the future is inevitable, but there are people who would argue that point with you, too. -stan

      @Hello World! You are very uneducated on history. Mexicans invited Americans to act as a buffer between their own Spanish settlers and Native American tribes. And then when the central government took power from the states, most of the states revolted and Texas succeeded in gaining independence.

    Norman Asing, was the owner of a restaurant in San Francisco.
    "Sir: I am a Chinaman, a republican, and a lover of free institutions; am much attached to the principles of the government of the United States... The effect of your late message has been thus far to prejudice the public mind against my people, to enable those who wait the opportunity to hunt them down, and rob them of the rewards of their toil... You argue that this is a republic of a particular race - that the Constitution of the United States admits of no asylum to any other than the pale face. This proposition is false to the extreme, and you know it. The declaration of your independence, and all the acts of your government, your people, and your history are all against you."

    While I generally very much enjoy his videos, in this video, Mr. Green actually is wrong. At 11:35 , he claimed that the Compromise of 1850 passed despite all of the controversy in the legislature. Actually, that is not entirely accurate, at all. The Compromise of 1850 actually did not pass in the legislature, in fact, it was actually voted down. The only way for the contents of the Compromise to pass is if they were broken up as smaller acts. Stephen A Douglass from Illinois took the initiative to break up all of the different components of the Compromise of 1850 and present them to Congress. Every component passed except for one. While practically all of the aspects of the Compromise of 1850 were passed, they weren't passed under that title. The accuracy is in the details.
