Great video Ron! I'm doing this same repair right now. had a yellow clip fall out and the truck wouldn't pop, but it would start quiet and then develop a rattle/knock when it got up to temp. The long rocker arm was worn on the inside and the bridge was worn forward of center. Main turbo oil drain was leaking pretty bad too.
Newer diesels run a higher oil pressure than the older models. But people do not read the manual and do the maintenance properly, which leads to this problem described here. Thanx Ron 4 this info, hopefully it will help many.
Technology changes. The old diesels were big loud lumbering work horses that would last and could take neglect. But they stunk and were only for the true working class that needed them.. The new stuff is fast, quiet and efficient. With that comes more components and electronics. There are also regulations and contracts with builders and suppliers. Design conflicts and learning. It's getting better by the year and with a little education and love they will last.
Hello Ron, I do performance work and have built a few 6.4L, but don't do a lot of diagnostic type repairs I mostly do the 550-600hp tuner, emissions delete, and they blew the heads off of it type repairs. On a few occasions, I have ran across trucks that make a "bloop" noise, just once, very similar to this on start up, before the engine actually fires.
Did u have to remove the cab and front clip to service the valve train?? My brother in-laws is doing the same thing. Ur link was very helpful. Thank you.
One more thing... We have a 6.4L truck in the shop now that, came in for a messed up turbo VGT, and has wound up having a longblock with labor on our dime. I did not work on it personally, so I am going from what I was told and what I saw as the truck progressed. I would have taken a different course of actions, but I wanted to share. Truck is a deleted 09', with a Spartan tuner. It came in, we fixed the turbo problem by replacing the one turbo, after replacing the turbo and changing the oil, the truck would not start, wasn't making fuel pressure took it back apart and found the wiring harness that goes under the turbos for the HPFP chafed, put a harness on it and it fired right up. Drove it for 20-30 miles and it suddenly shut off and would not start, no HPF.. put a pump on it and as soon as it started it had a hard miss on #3 that did not go away. Replaced the injector and it ran well for 2-3 miles and started loping at idle, like a sticking IPR on a 7.3/6.0, but ran perfect everywhere else. Took it to Rudy's to update the Spartan hoping that the tune had become corrupted by the IDS.. Updated... ran perfect, for about 5 minutes, then it shut off again, with no HPF yet again. Towed it back to the shop and put a second pump on it. Oil was checked before it was driven (I checked it myself). It starts up and runs perfect. Backed out of the shop, and driven 2 more miles and suddenly it starts billowing out white smoke like crazy. The truck was turned around and driven back to the shop, still billowing smoke, barely running, and rattling. Shut the truck off and hooked up IDS and tried to restart and the engine hydrolocked. On teardown... discovered 9 gallons of fuel/oil mix in crankcase, a broken exhaust valve on #5 (A small chunk out of it... thinking back, this is probably what buggered up the VGT) All 8 cylinders were completely full of fuel, as was the intake, and dripping out of the exhaust. #8's rod was bent into the crankshaft. At this point we are like "WTF". What on earth caused it???
The VGT actuator is on the same circuit as the pump. I have a video showing to look for movement and how that gasket is usually bad if it does not move. With that much fuel in the oil, you either had a pump or injector leaking internally. I monitor short fuel trims to try and catch an injector leaking. A stock truck with the updated calibration may have and should have caught that. Too much oil/fuel usually causes 2 and 8 to run hot (rich). I tell people with modified trucks that they turned them into boats which means now we have to work on them every weekend and there is no guarantee EVER because I ate one too just like you did but I will never again.
That's about what I thought. My concern now is that they are now put the injectors and hfpf out of the fubar'd motor into the new motor. I warned the owner of the shop... and he told me that a leak from the pump would be impossible... I say... where the hell did 5 gallons of fuel come from in 10 minutes? Either the new injector, or that pump. They were FMC Reman pumps. I've done all I can... and it won't be on me... you just confirmed what I suspected... Happy New Year.
Brian Hicks sometimes we can catch a leaking pump by commanding the fuel pump on with the IDS and leaving the drain plug out to see if any fuel enters the crank case. You can also run these without the valve covers on them to see if the injectors are leaking. I've had the injectors themselves leak, not the lines. But at minimum I would do the crank case test and monitor short fuel trim
Ron. My name is Robert I have an 08 Ford f450 lariat auto 6.4. We have replaced the rocker arms and pushrods. I have what it sounds like a lifter tapping in the engine. Would a lifter cause some type of misfire or something other than sound on s cylinder? I have no codes egr dpf cat and muffler delete. Also I have a slight amount of white smoke in the tail pipe. No change in performance at all. Runs like a top. Only smokes when I come to a stop. It clears up as I drive.
I have to replace the driver side rocker assembly the passenger side was done 11000 miles ago. I'm very capable of doing it. do I have to align the crank to be able to install the Rockers or can I just align the push rods and sink them down slowly then torque them down?
My truck just started making this sound pulled it apart today and 14 of the 16 rocker feet were pretty much flush instead of sticking out hopefully thats my issues
This is a really great video. I have an 08 job 1 6.4 that I had EGR and DPF deleted at 77K, right after I bought it. It had been well maintained, which is not saying much considering the damage that was already done implicitly by the EGR/DPF. The truck has 98K now and runs like a racehorse, with stellar fuel economy for what it is. I have an occasional and random popping into the airbox that no local mechanic can diagnose. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Im working on a 6.0 2007. it has a loud noise on the rocker arms, specially on #1 cylinder. it sound louder around 1500 rpm's. sounds like almost taping on the valve cover. is there a common failure that can cause that? engine has no misfire or popping noise. complaint was the noise, but did had a code with injector number 6 and 8 and also a Camshaft sensor.
ive gotta question for ya, ive done a full egr delete and tuner and ive started to notice like a ticking noise coming from the engine could it be rockers or something way worse
Hi I hope you don't mind but have a couple questions for you. I own a 6.4 I live in North Dakota where it gets very cold usually around -30 how often should I change my oil and also anything else I need to look out for thanks Ed Seymour
Oil changes really vary by idle time. I've had guys go over 7500 with no problems and others that could not go 1000 miles because of too much idle time. The main killer is not completing the regen process. Also vehicles need to be driven until they reach operating temp. Diesels will never reach that if idling and just around town driving in cold weather. Diesels actually create a lot of heat so they are more robust. But that also causes them to take more time and work to warm up. If you have the newest calibration it monitors a lot more and can warn you of the oil temp being too high or overfilled.
my head was replaced n I believe all.those stuff was replace. so my mechanic say.. n.my engine loud as yours in d pic. please tell me a list of stuff I have to change n.what needs to be adjusted
Ron, thanks for your videos as they've helped me tremendously. I have this exact truck with the "thumping" sound, but I shut it off immediately and drained some oil out. Noise seems to have gone away. You ever seen that before? If so, is it safe to drive or should I just replace everything you showed in the video? Thanks in advance.
just bought a 2010 f350 6.4. guy said a lifter had failed causing the cap holding the rocker tip to fall off on the #7 exhaust rocker. had a tick and ran rough. took the valve cover off and sure enough it has mechanics wire holding the tip on. ever heard of the tip falling off?
Hey Ron Thanks for uploading the video! I have a friend who recently asked me to look at his 2010 6.4 powerstroke. He said he heard a noise like air rushing and then the truck started running poorly and leaking oil. I found 3 of the glow plug boots pushed out of the valve cover and oil running down the sides of the engine. I also noticed a massive amount of exhaust coming from the crankcase area (checked at the oil fil cap) oil level is normal but engine is missing and lots of white smoke. I think the #2 piston is cracked because it threw a misfire cyl 2 code. Does this sound right or is there anything else I should check before removing the engine? (the glow plugs are there, I read somewhere they can break in half and blow out)
I just went through this with my 2010 ps truck blowing a glow plug out. Replaced them then had a misfire while idoling in -20 weather. I ended up replacing all the injectors. I just got my truck back today. My truck got 227,000 miles on it.
All said and done it was about $4600. I had a bad piston in cylinder 8. Built up pressure from diesel fuel getting into the block caused piston to hit the valve and bend it. Thank God no cylinder damage
Thanks for your time making allthis videos they are very useful. I have a concern about 6.4 engine, the engine does a very annoying screesh by the turbos, it uses to be when the engine was cold, now itdoes some times at normal operating temperature. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and best regards.
I just “fixed” an 08 with this issue. It ran great for two minutes and it happened again and the same cylinder is showing bad on the power balance. What has happed? Could their be additional damage to the lifter or cam?
John DiMartino it's a redesigned MaxxForce 7 Engine originally producing around 200 240 Horsepower but then Ford got it made 350 Horsepower then goes in tunes and making now 400 or more horsepower can't blame the Engine it's running stock parts at over twice the output they even made it for
6.4s are pure garbage, I work on them day in and out. This is wear on the rocker feet(between pushrod and arm), seen them wear through and break the arm off on more than one occasion. Roughly 180,000km on the odo is when they go. (like 110k miles). Those feet must be made of recycled pop cans.
I had that same sound by my air filter on my 08 6.4 but then it went away on its own and sometimes it comes back I have full delete with with 5" straight pipe could it be the same problem or what could it please help! Thanks
i wish people would just change there freaking oil..... and ofc all the other fluids! inpect there truck for leaks once a month! new diesel's are no longer just get in and turn the key!!!
I got same noise problem now on a 2017 ford f350 6.7 turbo diesel and this just helped me out and THANK YOU for this video 💪🥇
RIP Ron, you the man 🙏
My 2010 6.4 just developed this noise about a couple of weeks ago and couldn't figure out what it was. I'm sure glad you had this video lol
Great video Ron! I'm doing this same repair right now. had a yellow clip fall out and the truck wouldn't pop, but it would start quiet and then develop a rattle/knock when it got up to temp. briansmobile1 Going to start this repair Tuesday morning...driver side. If you're available for any thoughts...thanks

Rest in peace Ron! We miss you
All these small diesel engines are MONEY PITS.

DieselTechRon I have 6.4 it's making louder popping sound but from top left pass intercooler hose any info would be appreciated thanks
Agustin Villa bro he had already passed away when you posted your question
Thanks Ron, great information!! I owned a f250 with a 7.3 and have never been happy with the 6.4,,,,

How does someone know if they have the latest calibration?
Did u have to remove the cab and front clip to service the valve train?? My brother in-laws is doing the same thing. Ur link was very helpful.
Thank you.
Yes a 6.0 will do this but 60s are normally a broken lifter.
Thanks for your reply.
How much was it to do this?? My 6.4 is currently doing this, has been for a few months
R.I.P. DAN WAS THE BEST.... PEACE
Dan?
DIESEL DAN THE REPAIR MAN
Where are you located? I have a f350 with 6.4l and it makes noise only when I give it gas when idling it sounds fine. Do you know what it is?
Can be lifters as well
You can have someone or a dealer check it with the ids updates. Or use a scanner that tells the calibration and google it.
I'm having the same problem. My question is will it Hurt the engine driving like that till it gets fixed

I had this sound pop up shortly after an oil change but I didn't use the 15/40 can that be a problem.
My 7.3 sounded just like that but way louder. Broken rocker arm and bent push rod. Cost less that $30 and back on the road.
Did you lose oil pressure to when this happened? my truck made the same noise and had a pushrod off the rocker but I have no oil pressure as well
I have the same popping on a 6.0. Have you seen the issue on a 6.0 also?

Same thing happened on mine. Bad lifter.
Mine does the same but a 7.3 can that be it?
keeps ron busy and making money though
Around what mileage would they have to be checked ?
no set miles. if maintained they don't wear out. make sure the regens compete
It’s a common problem on one bank only or both banks? I have same issue and not sure if I should order parts for both sides
I thought it would be more noticeable but I didn’t hear anything.
NAVSTAR obviously cut a lot of corners with this engine.i don't care if it got an oil change every 15k,. Rockers shouldn't wear on a
