I believe this reading would be skewed cold if the container is open due to the evaporative cooling effect. Similar to when a glass of water placed in the fridge freezes only on the top because when water evaporates it brings heat with it, cooling the source. How much skewed would be the question.
I use a Thermoworks Node to monitor fridge temp and their air temp probe is fatter likely due to accuracy reasons. BUT I'm finding the now two brands of convertible upright freezers are not maintaining temps below expected levels and their average temp when set to 36 is nearer to 40...
One unit had the temperature sensor much lower and only activated the fan on cooling. Thawing a turkey would have caused all the food to spoil- the internal temp of an apple was 43F...
A probe in oil would likely be more accurate and non-evaporative.

If you really wanted to take the next step you would seal it into a bottle with fluid. They are available for purchase and some times are sold for wine rooms to ensure the most accurate temperatures.

@@fredsapplianceacademyI've just found that glycol, glass, and nylon buffer solutions exist and will definitely be looking into this!

You can but it will make the thermometer hard to read once that water freezes. I would suggest isopropyl alcohol as it's cheap, clear and wont freeze.

If that was necessary they'd make thermometers surrounded by water. You don't need to put a thermometer in the ground outside to have an accurate reading on your outside thermometer.

Hello Wilcox Tactical, and thank you for your comments. Just so you are informed, these style thermometers are called weighted thermometers. A Galileo thermostat would be a great example of this. There are also several different styles of weighted thermometers. Some of which use metal weights and a thermocouple. These are highly accurate and can be expensive. As far as your outside thermometer goes it would be silly to place it in the ground unless you wanted to know the ground temperature as ground temperature and air temperature are two different things. I take ground temperature readings a few times a year so I can tactically plant my cold and warm weather crops. Another way to think about it may be like this. If you open the door to your house to go outside does the temperature outside change? The answer is no because the volume of the air outside is much greater than that of your house. The same logic applies to your refrigerator in your home. When you open the door to your fridge it is not cooling your house rather the house warming the frig. In a sense, the refrigerator is a micro-climate inside a micro-climate (your home). The point of the video is to teach about the variables that cause the air temperatures in your refrigerator to swing up and down and how the most important temperature is the internal temperature of your food which is represented by the glass of water. All to explain that if the thermometer is placed alone on a shelf and reads 50 degrees this does not mean the food itself is 50 degrees. Hope this helps!
