great video, came in clutch. For anyone else looking to do this, I assembled the pump with the 3 dots on the cam ring facing down as in the video, but the pump didnt seem to work. I reassembled it and made the 3 dots face up so they face the back of the pump as mentioned by a few others in the comments, and after jacking up the car, and bleeding out the system, I got steering back. And for me, the vains in the pump didnt have a rounded and rectangle edge, but I could be trippin. And just some general advice for those trying to fix a leak in the power steering, there is an o ring in the high pressure hose that connects to the pump, in my case I believe this was the culprit for the leak, but it was too late as I already started dismantling the pump. The location of this o ring can make it seem like the pump is leaking, so easy to misdiagnose, so starting there would be easier and cheaper to potentially fix the leak. Again great video mate, helped me out a lot.
Great video, it helped me heaps rebuilding a VL Commodore pump, I'm a former mechanic, but had never rebuilt a power steering pump. Great use of time lapse editing too, very professional
Signed in to say thanks man. Just bought a VR commodore off a bloke only to realise my P/S pump is leaking. I didn't expect to come across a video like this. You're a legend, mate. Cheers
Fuark m8 Awesome man, exactly my purpose for making this vid😉 I could not find anything good to go off for rebuilding these pumps. Thanks for the support and glad I could help
So I refitted three of the seals inside of the pump. But it's still leaking. I'm not surprised since I noticed the o-ring on the high-pressure hose was flat and kind of split and I did nothing about it. Where the shit do I get a new o-ring for that high-pressure hose? It doesn't come in the seal pack that you and I bought, does it?
Fuark m8 Nah doesn't come in the pack. I'm sure you could use a regular o ring. I bought a whole new high pressure hose so had new o ring with it obviously.
Thanks for your vid still helping commy owners, actually building a l27 with my son in law. It would not be possible without your advice thank you for sharing your knowledge in a plain simple way.
Cheers mate, my Pajero pump is leaking on to m alternator. It is the o ring in the pressure switch, but may as well re build the pump thanks to UA-cam videos
Onya mate. It is a pleasent suprise to find your youtube vid demonstraiting exactly what I want to see using exactly what I have to use... I just happen to have bought the exact same kit from suzukisuper myself
lordchickenhawk Thanks mate, glad I can help some people out with a common problem! I too was in the same boat not knowing what was involved etc too haha
thanks for replying mate , is your pump an intank that replaces the old stock one? its hard to find information i was going to do boot set up with 044 etc but wanted to make it more of a family fun car now as have had some babys and i think the noise would be a bit much inside the car for the family
Matthew Rossendell Yeah the Walbro just went in the place of the stock one. Just had to cut the plug and crimp new one that came with Walbro from memory. Just go a 460lph and you'll be covered upto 400kw probs lol
hey there, love your videos and that is one cool ute you have built, im building a vs with rb25, what fuel pump are you using do you think the v6 fuel pump could handle it while engine is stock, thanks
Matthew Rossendell Thanks man, glad you like! Ah cool man, great motor choice indeed. I'm currently running a walbro 255lph pump. Stock pump won't handle boost, so no I wouldn't bother. For the small price of a fuel pump ($150-$180) just put one in that'll handle future power increases👍
Hello sir, can I ask does there is any other problems can cause wheel hard to turn? We rebuild the pump following your video which is very useful, but we start the car and hard to turn the wheel.
you are a wonderful resource for dedicated owners, Me I just to 2 pinch a part $5 for the whole thing but that will end one day. I gave a vt away to a mate due to not staring even on lpg but also supplied a fuel pump which fixed LPG issue. Think about it the dealer fitted LPG will not cut in until it starts on petrol. his power steering suddenly stopped & needs to get it home anybody know about a sticky valve fix. Hit it with a hammer trick?
always thought you had to press the plate on the shaft that the pulley bolts to ....seen a couple of remanufactured ones with a extra bolt in the centre of the shaft as a insurance on the threaded centre hole because there is metal removed when you press it off and slightly loose when you press is back on....but it looks like you dont have to.
Question, does the seal have the bearing enclosed and what kind of money for the kit. I was looking at replacing a VX one with a new unit but after viewing your clip how does a new unit differ to a rebuild one.
Specialized 29er No, the seal is seperate to the bearing. The kit is like $15 from memory. Honestly I would of bought one already done just because im pretty time poor, but took the time to do this to both please my curiosity and to help all you guys out there 😎
Did mine tonight watching your clip, mines a VX V6 which is identical to yours. Mine didnt seen worn or leaking (120,000k engine) but while its out for a rebuild everything is either getting rebuilt or replaced with new quality parts.
Just wondering if I've done something wrong? I put it back together in reverse as I pulled it apart and now that it's back on my car it's now got heavy steering. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 👍
Sorry it's a VN Calais V6. I've bought the revs up and swung on the steering wheel with it driven and lifted off the ground and it did push fluid out but it's still heavy.
Awesome job mate! I just went on eBay to order the seal kit so I can do it too. Sad bit is that my power steering pump works fine atm. What is it with pulling things apart and rebuilding them that is so much bloody fun? :-)
Matthew Barry Thanks mate! Haha it's freakin annoying ha! Where's yours leaking? Bit of luck it's just the rear o ring do you don't need to fully disassemble
Not leaking but had an issue with it before I stripped the engine and rebuilt. Was driving along and heard a big thud. Car started trembling so I pulled over to have a squiz - power steering reservoir was empty but all lines were still attached. No idea what the go was as had checked its level a few days before. Engine's just about to get primed to start back up and was sussing out some vids and came across yours and thought I might as well give the power steering pump a once over too! Engine had done 360,000kms before the rebuild so PS seals would be on the way I'd presume? I noticed that this kit doesn't come with the high pressure hose end o-ring so I'll hunt around to see if I have one that fits otherwise might just grab one off Holden next week.
Matthew Barry Yeah if the pump is that old it could def use new seals haha. Don't mess round, just buy a whole new high pressure hose man, after time they break down and weep etc 👍🏼
Put the PS pump back on today and primed it. Primed the engine with oil so tomorrow will get it started. One thing I did notice today was that there was maybe 3-4 mill play in between the PS pump and where the pulley bolts on. Rotor play? Is that normal? Drive belt holds it firm enough though. Do you reckon a seal kit is enough or do these pumps need to be replaced at some point? Had a bit of PS fluid on the left inner rack boot which I think it could be from swollen seals in the steering rack so will wait until it all goes to the dogs before I look at replacing the high pressure line and rack.
From what I've read, mainly supercharged, there's multiple ways you can go about it though. You really gotta research this kinda thing and see what option falls within your budget
I've driven a mildly worked SC l67 and to be completely honest... it was boring as... my turbo l27 was not even comparable lol it feels just like a 5L (and they're nothing special)

You used YOUR toothbrush ? I always use the wife’s for degrease projects.

No problem at all, glad it has helped so many out there🙂
Hi mate thank you for this video I just reco my pump through it was hard but thanks to your video I replaced all the seals and works perfectly
Michael sergakis That's awesome, glad to hear, Michael! ☺️
thrush laugh out loud keep up the good work mate! i enjoy your videos very much.👍 :-)
Cheers mate, my Pajero pump is leaking on to m alternator. It is the o ring in the pressure switch, but may as well re build the pump thanks to UA-cam videos
Hopefully it somewhat crosses over and helps rebuild

lordchickenhawk Thanks mate, glad I can help some people out with a common problem! I too was in the same boat not knowing what was involved etc too haha
Yeah... I'm not really a car person, more into old bikes...so extra thanks. Now I just have to go and figure out how to get the pump out
That bloody little retaining ring killed me. I found it easier to use two picks rather than screwdriver
this was helpful cheers
thank you for the info.. very much appreciated
Matthew Rossendell Anytime 👍
yes great video thank you a lot
thanks for the vid mate!!
The 10 plates can go in two ways but only one way is rite rounded edge out
Thanks man.

Its dots up bro ! Manuel even says luckily ! Dont know if u can do a retraction atp ?

be careful the thrush when working on pumping stuff
Some backyard mechanic said don't rebuild power steering pumps. Did you have any dramas with it since?
Hello sir, can I ask does there is any other problems can cause wheel hard to turn? We rebuild the pump following your video which is very useful, but we start the car and hard to turn the wheel.
It sounds like the pump isn't working as it should. Did everything go back in the same way it came out? I can't really think of what it could be
VY has the 3 points facing up, what a pain that was to figure out.
you are a wonderful resource for dedicated owners, Me I just to 2 pinch a part $5 for the whole thing but that will end one day. can you do this on a vt vy vz?
The cam ring with 3 dots goes facing up (like the rotor)...they must face the back of the power steering pump...
always thought you had to press the plate on the shaft that the pulley bolts to ....seen a couple of remanufactured ones with a extra bolt in the centre of the shaft as a insurance on the threaded centre hole because there is metal removed when you press it off and slightly loose when you press is back on....but it looks like you dont have to.
markovr Yeah that was my initial thought as it has the hex drive inside the shaft end, obviously to take the pulley mount off the shaft

Hmmm 🤔 not too sure man, that's really annoying!
@@johnromeo3685 the 10 silver plates can go in two different ways only one way is rite
I got the same problem. What was your solution mate?
Damn just did mine and same thing happened, jacked up on Stands and steering is hard. Any ideas guys
Awesome job mate! I just went on eBay to order the seal kit so I can do it too. Sad bit is that my power steering pump works fine atm. What is it with pulling things apart and rebuilding them that is so much bloody fun? :-)

Matthew Barry 3-4mm in and out play or side to side play? I can't remember whether I had any play on mine
Need a rack rebuild :,)
What's the oil seal part number ??
I'm curious did your Vr start as a N/A v6 or was it the supercharged l67 changed over to a turbo setup?
Nathan Worland Haha, well it started out bone stock😏
You can also get some pretty decent numbers outta the L67
Flatout, in what form? Turbo charged or supercharged, i'm looking at building one myself. Thanks for the reply bro :)
From what I've read, mainly supercharged, there's multiple ways you can go about it though. You really gotta research this kinda thing and see what option falls within your budget
