I think Dolly is the greatest! She helps her hometown areas. Raised millions for their tornadoe relief fund. Gives free books to preschoolers. Lovely, talented. Gosh i love her!
Misty you and Mark remind me of my (older) cousin and her husband... they were big on frequent road trips, sight seeing, the arts and LOTS of antiquing. She was the outgoing one, he was the quieter one who would always be rolling his eyes and shaking his head. They enjoyed every moment together. They were truly "two of a kind" : married in 1959 and spent 55 wonderful years together. You are the Gen X version of them! Love it!! 🥰
Colonel Sanders was my husband's Uncle. He was married to Larry's dad's sister Claudia. We will be eating at Claudia Sanders Dinner House in Shelbyville KY this coming Sunday for my husband's brother's 50th Anniversary to his wife. It's too bad this hard weather has ruined your trip.

I meet the colonel when he visited a children's hospital school that I worked in here in saint john new brunswick, canada. He was very gracious and gave out chicken and fries to the children and staff. He was a long way from home. We put a picture of him up in the main lobby.

Feel so bad for you guys that everything was closed. We always love when the snow is on the trees when we go down in the winter. Imagine how much Maybel would have with all those snowflakes. Dollywood is an awesome amusement park to go to. Also Paula Deens is one of our favorite restaurants to eat at down there.

I wonder what Colonel Sanders would think of the restaurant chain today? It’s not even called Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore (it’s been shortened to just KFC). I don’t know if any of the Sanders family members still have involvement with the company.
Stick around we have more snow coming lol. East TN has not seen this much snow in 31 years according to the weather people....there are people alive today that have NEVER seen a snow like this....and Gatlinburg does not get alot of snow like they used to.....about 9" a year. Most years they man make the snow at the ski resort. I'm 59, and this snow reminds me of my chldhood snows...I'm glad you got to experience it. I have a friend up in Indiana who had to snowplow his own driveway last week, he had BIG snowdrifts.
Hello from Corbin KY. I live about 2 minutes away from the KFC and I wish you woulda had time in the somerset peddlers mall I always find stuff in there.
My husband was born in 1948. He remembers going to Corbin to see Aunt Claudia and Uncle Harlan at their farm and they had barrels of the seasoning stored there in a barn. We have Claudia's original cookbook for the restaurant that has all the recipes in it. The recipes call for like 50 pounds of flour etc. Not much use to the home cook LOL!! But still interesting.

Then: Beaver, should have told you at the gate” I snorted, that is from one of my favorite movies! I must go to a Buccee’s! I love snacks and my husband loves barbecue! Hubby and I spent two weeks in KY and TN a few years back, and stumbled upon the salt and pepper shaker museum. I collect vintage plastic salt and pepper shakers and had to see it. OMG! HUGE! and it was only $5.00 to get in. Next time you're in the area, you just have to check it out. It was amazing!!
As a native Coloradan I was quite surprised to see everything closed down. Wow.... it is a smidge of snow and ice too. Heck they did not even plow the streets here unless it got over 10". As for sliding in the snow you learn early how to deal with situation. Well lesson learned for all of us. Do you not travel down south in the winter. Also I have texture issues which even apply to food so I rarely will eat any meat. Gosh If I get a piece of fat or gristle on anything I am just not able to swallow it. Kind of frustrating but have been that was since a child. Note I am still alive and kicking around at 62 while eating a limited diet so obviously not much harm in it.

Misty , Rummikub pronounced Rummy Cube is actually the BEST game once u get the hang of it bc u can totally reorg the whole thing, break runs down into groupings and groupings into runs. LoVE that game! Enjoyed the vids of your trip but sad Mother Nature didn't cooperate!!
So glad you got to visit Gatlinburg!!! I’m a decendant of the original founding family of Gatlinburg 🤩 when we get a thaw out in the spring you will have to come back! We have some great antique shops here locally. Not just in Gatlinburg, give a shout if you come back this way and I can show you where several are on the maps and even visit mine 💕
I loved the red and white striped uniform top for kfc..i worked at a movie theatre in 1975. I was 15. The uniform was bubblegum pink w black waist insets. They were so short! How i wish i had that uniform now! Too cute! It was the 70s afterall. Lol.

You certainly had a few challenges on this trip! The lack of good shopping finds was certainly not for lack of trying! Buc-ee's are masters of marketing-huge # of gas pumps, huge, clean women's restrooms, huge staff so even at busy times there is little waiting, every snack you could want and even healthy-ish snacks in easy to carry cups. They can definitely suck you into parting with your$$. Another snack I love there is their gummy bears!
Col. Sanders was right about the mothers deciding where the family would stay. I can remember as a kid in the '50s and '60s waiting on the car with my dad while my mother went in to look at the room. And many motels had a little attached diner for blue plate specials for dinner, homemade pies and cakes on the counter under glass domes, fresh breakfast from the griddle in the morning.
The restaurant is pronounced im-pell-a-ZAR-ees. Good eats.

Love Buc-ees. They have one in Florida by our condo and I went there last year for gas and once again I got so distracted when I went inside and I got all kinds of food and snacks and even a sweatshirt for our dog. Well.....I came gome and when we went to go out to dinner later that evening.......my husband started the car and said, " didn't you say you went to Buc-ees to get gas?" We were laughing because I got so distracted I forgot to get gas. We laughed because I said, " no harm ill just have to go back tomorrow lol." Buc-ees is truly an experience.
The cinnamon nuggets are really good.
They also have merchadise for every holiday.

That was quite a comprehensive museum. My relatives drove from St Louis to Pensacola last June. When they checked in they were told they were at the wrong location. Turns out the pic and info on the website was incorrect. They didn't receive any apologies or compensation. Price was higher. Unhappy and tired tourists.

I'm sorry Tennessee was closed! I'm just north of Chattanooga and we were frozen in for almost 2 days. We never get just a nice snow - it's always rain that freezes solid.

During the winter, I always carry a baby bottle with rubbing alcohol in it just in case easier to squirt in the door frame and the windshield and if you have an actual lock, you know you have to use a key on
I guess some people aren’t built for the snow. And that wasn’t even much snow 😂. I can’t believe they closed down for just that much snow.
