And as you were often putting them in good humor and otherwise making them happy, it was a position that came with a whole slew of perks. So what was life actually like as a court jester?

I read a book a few years ago called “The Jester” by James Patterson and it was a really good read. I would definitely suggest giving it a look, it’s very different from What Patterson usually writes, but it was co-written so that’s probably why..

Using the painting of Stańczyk as thumbnail and not mentioning him as reason why jesters were important is so wrong. Not saying what that painting means is insane! Stańczyk is one of Polish national heroes. Long story short, on painting that parts are used here- he, a jester is worried about future of country when aristocrats are partying in next room. One of the paintings used in the background of the video was a portrait of polish jester Stańczyk, who served 3 polish kings. Stańczyk was well known not only on the kings' courts but he was also a sort of a public figure: he was portrayed by famous painters several times and his persona was used as a symbol of national consciousness in a famous (...at least in Poland) play "Wesele".

The name Samuel "Maggoty" Johnson has such a Pythonesque ring to it.
I have to imagine that "leap, whistle and fart" was all in one grand gesture. He whistles as he leaps, pitch rising until he reaches the height of his jump at which point he rips a fart louder than you or I ever could. The court is in stitches by the time his feet hit the ground and he walks on that, not to return until next years whistling leapfart

I'm a male caregiver in a dementia unit's double secure hall and I can get laughs from down the hall, around the corner, the hall on the other side of the door. They're just so absurd. Great fun.
