Wavetale Review - Chill, But a Bit Weak

- I assume most have never even heard of this game before. Which is part of the reason I wanted to cover it right as it came out. It looked cool, and I wanted to highlight it and help more people learn about it. Sadly, it wasn't what I was excepting. But I still hope this video helps the game reach more people who would otherwise missed it.
I realized after finishing the video that the best way to describe what I thought this game would be would be to go back to a comparison I made early. The Retro DKC games and UbiArt Rayman games. This game has movement somewhat akin to those, and I was hoping for level design that would put that movement to good use in the same way. But alas, it was not to be. Oh, well.

There's a first person momentum based platformer called Cyber Hook you might like. You gain momentum by running, can wall run and jump and use a hook to swing around or pull you places. The levels are short and encourage speed running the stages. Currently on sale on switch for like 3 and a half.
You mean the game one of my first videos was about? I'm familiar.
@@Pariah6950 what about crumble?
You should check out the old videos they’re good too…
@@Pariah6950 I can see that now lol
I think he'd really like Mario Sunshine
It's nice to see you covering these more obscure titles, hoping that this is something you'll focus on more after the Sonic stuff.
Solar Ash just released on Steam if you want to play more fast paced platformers. It's not as momentum-based but there is some intense timed platforming.
nice video. i’m still going to check this game out, out of my own curiosity. i’m always happy to see you review somewhat obscure platformers.
Thanks for doing this review, I didn't hear about this game until now and it looks kind of cool . I do want to kind of try it out, and be honest I'm a sucker for the art style.
fun fact now sonic origins added the game gear / master system games
thank God this is not some weird undertale fangame
You know, the more I look at games like this, the more it seems like those games just can't get you to care about the enemies.
I am inclined to agree with you, sir.
It's always been a struggle for 3D games in particular. The main solutions seem to be "make em' big and/or mandatory for progression".
Love to see games like these integrate enemy interaction into the game's mechanics a la Hollow Knight's Soul gauge. Or just not have enemies and find other ways to challenge the player, that works too
I'd love to see a video or two about Devil May Cry since I know you also play that series. then again.... you'd have to probably cover DMC2 if you cover that series and I'm not such a cruel subscriber to ask you to cover that one lmao. personally my favs are DMC5,DMC3 and DMC4. I don't think DMC1 aged too well despite my nostalgia for it.
I'll cover DMC at some point.
@@Pariah6950 sweet, I'm looking forward to it!
This game looks cool! I'm fine with games that have cool movement, but don't really take advantage of it, so I'm sure I'll like this game. I'm very happy it stopped being a Stadia exclusive too, man that would've been really bad if that never changed.
This sounds kind of like the early build of Sonic Frontiers when it was only one big island.
Thanks for the discover nice gameplay
I would love it if you reviewed some Rayman games dude
I think you might enjoy Solar Ash, it seems very similar to how you describe this game so you might like it
Here's a question. Did you enjoy the experience enough that you look forward to any potential or theoretical sequels? Generally that is sort of a benchmark for me when it comes to "okayish" games.
It depends. If it's just more of the same, not really. But if they can take this and improve it, I might be interested.
i think you might like rain world. a survival game without momentum, but with a complex (and quick paced) moveset and combat that is super fun to play
you HAVE to try Solar Ash
The last couple of islands of Sonic Frontiers feel the same way you described this game, just sort of repetitive where your investment in the rest of the story is kind of supposed to be carrying the experience
I said it was similar to Frontiers. That game also shows pretty much everything it has to offer on the first island.
This reminds me a lot of Solar Ash, what are your thoughts on that?
Great review.
Edit: Literally too real for UA-cam.
Games that have a large amount of mechanical depth but never ask the player to use it are so frustrating to me. The nuances of the systems will go completely over the casual players heads while the advanced players will just play a game that does a better job of testing them. I understand the appeal of easy, casual games but it's just such a shame to see a set of perfectly good mechanics go to waste.
Same.
Sounds like Wavetale failed to make a splash.
I bought tiny and big: grandpa's leftovers on sale recently, have you heard of or played it? Seems like your kinda thing
Also, reinstalled mirror's edge for a second playthrough, that's also probably your kinda thing
hey pariah, have you played crumble?
Pariah, have you played a hat in time?
That is one of my favorite games ever.
