I was genuinely blown away by how good these drinks came out. Also, I hope you enjoy the visit from Ranger Greg in this one, more of that to come! Hey Greg, I have a drink I would love for you to try! I call it a Wake Up Call. It contains: .75oz of lemon juice, 1oz of orgeat syrup, 1.5oz of unsweetened pineapple juice, 2oz of rye (I prefer Pendleton Rye), 1oz of amaretto, 1 bar spoon of Luxardo maraschino liquor. Shake well and serve over ice, top it up with a bit of ginger ale (bonus points if you get the head to come out of the top of the glass). Garnish it with a piece of pineapple, a cherry, and pineapple fronds, (more bonus points if you make it look like a sun rising in front of some mountains). This is a slightly sweeter drink but I believe that the citrus and rye really work to balance it out, I designed it to be in the "tiki / liquid AC" vein and very approachable for anyone who may not have a pallet for whiskey / rye. I would love your thoughts on this one, I am pretty proud of it and everyone I have made one for loved it!
One of my favourite sponsored UA-cam ads ever: - Greg does dress up - shows us a drink and how to make it, which is why we’re here - lovely b roll of bears and nature - product gives money to conservation projects
Careful about grapefruit and quinine. There are drug interactions between compounds in grapefruit that slow the catalytic breakdown of quinine and many other medications. Although the effective amount for large differences is often referenced at about one grapefruits worth of ingestion, that does not mean it has no effects at lower amounts. Just at least check estimated amounts of each in your own circumstances in planning to make these, and how much of them you drink.
Good rule of thumb is if you are on any medication and want it to work, stay away from anything grapefruit. And importantly now, I’ll point out that includes birth control.
Grapefruit is wild because this isn't even an uncommon issue with grapefruit either. Although I am unsure if the compound is in the rind of grapefruit or just in its juices. Worth a look tho!
Unrelated to the video, but the same applies to activated charcoal for different classes of medications, including antidepressants and anti inflammatories. It actually adsorbs medication, making the dose smaller if both are ingested within an hour of each other.
it's amazing how perfectly you crystallized what you wanted from this channel right from the get-go. Most creators have a few off sloppy videos before hitting their stride, but you nailed the formula and came out sprinting. I remember back when you were a smallish channel with a few tens of thousands of subs thinking "man this guy's production work is so far ahead of most channels with ten times his subs". It's so great to see you flourishing and having fun making these great videos.
Also, if you don't wanna mess with quinine dosage/can't get cinchona bark, Quassia bark I found is a good substitute. It has no actual quinine, but it's active compound quassine has that same astringent bitterness you're looking for. It is a lot stronger though, so I'd substitute it in a 1:10 ratio in the syrup recipe, give or take.
I absolutely love your show, but I have to limit myself to no more than 3 episodes per day or I start feeling an overwhelming urge to visit a liquor store and start mixing :D
If you're looking for another twist - I went to a London distillery and was served a G&T with a chamomile syrup (or maybe tea bitters?) included. It was incredibly refreshing, especially after a long day of walking around the city.
Chamomile is amazing in drinks and desserts. Subtle and herby. I put it in whipped cream for strawberries and cake. Magic. Really good with rum or gin.
Can you do a video like "the customer is always wrong" except reverse it, like "the bartender is sometimes wrong?" Years ago I ordered a long island iced tea and received a drink where bartender replaced the coke AND sour mix/lemon juice with orange juice. It remains to this day, after 15 years of legal-age drinking, the only drink I have ever refused to pay for. Maybe it could fit into a "customer is always wrong" episode, but I didn't order it that way so there would be no receipt! Anyway, just discovered your channel last week and I have binged so many episodes, I really love your style!
My usual "bad" bartender experience is I order a whiskey and soda and have to stop them when they begin making a whiskey and Coke. I live in a college town.
Not sure if you want to add 1/2 a liter of London Dry Gin to your tonic mixture as the on screen text suggested. I know you said water :) By far my favorite drink, usual go to is Botonist + Fever Tree with a touch of lime (occasionally grapefruit bitters). For a two(ish) ingredient drink there's an incredible amount of variation available.
Botanist and Fever Tree elderflower tonic is truly wonderful. Botanist doesn't get enough love as a gin. Though I'm also a massive scotch snob, so Bruichladdich has a special place in my heart.
I loved you description of the forest in the gin and tonic. I grew up in a forest in Michigan with juniper bushes and cedar trees, once I turned drinking age I fell in love with gin cuz it taste like home. my favorite is the local Knickerbocker Gin made in Holland
Honestly love videos like this, taking a 'simple' drink and showing just how variable they can be is just fascinating to witness. Also, you've officially sold me on getting a drinkmate. Been needing a new machine for a while and you've finally worn me down, so thank you for emptying my wallet slightly my good man.
I’m a huge fan of the show, and also a huge fan of a good G&T. I’ve made a couple batches of Morganthaler’s tonic (using his earlier blog post version), and there’s one awesome aspect that would’ve been cool to show off on camera: quinine fluorescence! If you’ve got a black light, tonic water will glow pale blue under UV illumination. It’s lovely to see the tincture go from non-glowy vodka to an absolute light show once the quinine is extracted.
Would you ever consider doing a G&T matrix like you did for margaritas and manhattans? I'd be curious to see if there is an actual difference between the gin and tonic combos. The margarita video is so interesting to me. (Also I desperately want an Old Faithful cocktail of my own...)
A friend and I did this one night, got a bunch of different flavors of fevertree tonics and a couple different gins. Really fun night, recommend trying it
I really adore your ad spots lately where you make cocktails. The one in this episode made me smile a bunch and it was really fun. You have a knack for making most anything an entertaining treat, and I appreciate that skill of yours very much!!
Greg should put all of these videos into a playlist titled "The Quest for the Drink of Summer" 🤣 But really, G&T is one of my favorites and I'm fascinated by the idea of making my own tonic! And I think you've finally convinced me I need that book.
Hey Greg, i love that you mention shelf-stableness on things. As a household of a single drinker, i can't afford to drink enough of things, and stuff does go off. And i've tried my best to keep to stuff that keeps, part of the reason i like cocktails and drinks is that i can keep them forever and always have options, however.. i still haven't nailed it down for some usual bar stuff. It'd be neat to have an episode on how to keep a personal bar stocked with shelf stable goods. (like 2:1 high syrup count syrups)
I love the 'deep dive' episodes into certain drinks, replete with science and history. I think my favorite episode so far was the history of rum. Hope to see more of these in the future!
One of my favorite cocktails to make at home is a tanqueray gin infused with mint lavender tea mixed with fever tree tonic and a squeeze of lime. I'll have to try it with the homemade tonic syrup!
Hi Greg! I traveled to Boston this past week and went to Drink, a cocktail bar in the Seaport area and had an incredible time. My bartender Fred Yarm made me two INCREDIBLE cocktails that he invented himself, and I just learned he has two books! I absolutely love branching out into modern, unique cocktails which is why I bought Regarding Cocktails on your recommendation. I’d totally recommend checking out his books/blog! He made me the “Doomscroller”, which was an incredible smoky tiki drink. Essentially the center of my cocktail Venn diagram
Watching you smoke the rosemary brings Scarborough Fair to mind… and makes me want to research what gin would play well with (smoked) parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. For that matter, it also invites making an Old Fashioned with the same smoked herbs, and using a whiskey with pronounced leather notes.
Greg is a giant f$&@in’ weirdo, and I’m here for it. I love it when he drifts into his voices, characters, and odd-ball descriptions. His personality, and the fantastic shooting and editing, are what makes this channel stand out. Keep up the good work!!
My problem with tonic syrups is that they rarely seem to carbonate well... My favourite at the moment is Jack Rudy Elderflower Tonic which is perfectly clear and carbonates very well. Mixing that with some Tanq 10 and a couple of drops of Bittermens Hopped Grapefruit Bitters and a squeeze of lime is amazing.
I just made my first ever drink with actual bar tools. It was a whiskey sour according to your 3 fav whiskey cocktail vid. It was extremely good. I used rittenhouse rye because I had it and like it. Love your stuff and I’ll be making more drinks soon 😊
Gin and Tonic is my favorite cocktail. Mostly because every bartender on Earth can make one. But also because it’s delicious and exactly as booze-y as I want to be. These embellishments are appealing, but they do take away how accessible and simple to make the drink is. Still, I’m just happy you made a video about my favorite cocktail. Thank you for your hard work and expertise, Greg.
Not just earth. I can't hear G&T without thinking of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. There is an entry in (I think) the third book where it discusses that every civilization to ever exist has created a Gin and Tonic. Although they vary widely in taste and spelling, they are all pronounced the same.
can i just say how neat i think it is to have a mini episode within the episode by getting this yellowstone burbon ad series. probably my favorite way to run an ad within the show without beating the viewer over the head with it. the quality of effort continues to be top notch on HTD!
Been drinking G&Ts my whole life and honestly didn't even know there were specs without lime. I totally agree with the 1 part gin, 2 parts tonic ratio, I find other ratios lose that easy drinking summer vibe that I'm looking for.
Even tho these days I use any and sometimes all the citrus I can find with my g&t, I’ve always considered lemon was the the “proper” citrus here. Maybe it’s a British thing
For what it's worth, my drink of summer this year is the Mexican Firing Squad. Reposado tequila, homemade grenadine, lime juice, and angostura bitters. A perfect mix of smoky, sweet, sour, and bitter, that is extremely customizable depending how you like your drinks balanced.
I went the majority of my adult life thinking that a Gin and Tonic was an "Old Person Drink" for whatever reason. It wasn't until last summer that I tried one, and its now probably one of my all time favorite summer drinks. Light, cold, refreshing.... yum. I'm really lazy though, and I've only ever made it with Canada Dry Tonic.
The thing that frustrates me the most about the people leaving those comments about your other video "aging poorly" is that even if Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine had turned out to be effective treatments, your video DID NOT assert that they weren't! You even explained why the hypothesis did have some merit! All you did was point out that the data that existed at the time was incomplete and weak (at best), and you warned people not to recklessly self-medicate. Even if it had turned out to be an effective treatment, every medication comes with risks and adverse effects and each patient needs to be properly evaluated my a medical professional who has the required knowledge to assess the situation, weigh the pros and cons, and integrate their patient's priorities to find the best treatment option. Your video was measured, well-researched, and presented beautifully. The people leaving those comments are idiots.
The issue is, as usual, morons were taking a fat oompa loompa with a toupee and with no science background as a scientific authority at face value to begin with that caused the issue. It really shows the soft power of the president. Ditto with drinking bleach. COVID has really shown darwinism has failed, sadly. Even after studies were done (AND REPEATED, which is the important part) that not only showed hydroxi was not only ineffective at helping COVID, but actively harmful, people still, to this day, tout it as useful and really...well it says a lot about modern society.
I have a friend that throws about a bar spoon or two of St. Germain in his G&T. The floral notes of the St. Germain just pulls everything together and does not take a single thing away from either the gin or the tonic. Really worth a try. Awesome video as always! I look forward to trying a smoked G&T.
One other suggestion for the "Drink of Summer" contest is flavored mojitos. The bar I work at does a strawberry one and a blackberry/peach one, both of which people seem to enjoy.
My husband and I watch these videos together and the ad read is this episode is our favorite kind. Where we kinda get a free mini episode in the middle of the big
I love gin and have a decent collection of different varieties. Over the past few years here in the uk the law changed so a lot of artisan small batch distilleries opened up. Fever tree is our go to tonic. I wouldn’t always add a slice of lime though. Depending on the gin I would add different things. Hendricks would have a slice of cucumber, Bombay sapphire would have a slice of lemon, Ophir would be a slice of orange. If you haven’t tried cucumber in it then I highly recommend as it is also clean and bitter so compliments the gin well with the sweetness coming from the tonic
Yes!! Totally agree with all these combinations! And try a kiwifruit-tini, i dont rember the exact measurements, but i think its 2 kiwifruit muddled, 2 oz gin, 1oz simple syrup, 1/2 oz lemon juice, shake and strain.
At 2:00... LMAO.. every time you go off I like you more. I've been bingeing your channel the last few days and I'm loving the consistent sustainability-ness you preach. Subbed! As a bartender for nearly 20 years, the best bartending channel I've come across!
Aw yeaaah, new Tonics episode! 4 years ago when I first started having to drink quinine because of restless leg syndrome (by a doctor's direction) I have fallen in love with tonics of all types. I mostly buy the cheap grocery store in-store brand tonics (sugar free with lemon) since its my medicine and I dont need to be spending huge amounts daily for it, but being cheap doesn't hurt how much I like it at all. I can't even drink some soft drinks anymore cause they taste cloying and plasticy (store brand cola especially). Fever tree is great when I can get it in resteraunts, though I would like more than the 3 tablespoons of drink you can get at once. It's strange that the version of tophat you have there is yellow, since the stuff I used to get off amazon 2 years ago was brown like the other '''authentic''' tonics you have on display. I agree though, the stuff doesn't taste like what you expect from tonic waters although it's not bad in it's own way. These days, I like to mix a spoonful of home made orange or cherry syrup in with half tonic and half water in a glass. I also don't chill it with ice cause I'm a savage. Best softdrink ever!
I really appreciate that you don't gatekeep. There's a lot of bar-adjacent people who insist it can't be a 'proper' cocktail without certain ingredients and expenditure. That you don't is refreshing and so encouraging. On that note - the ALDI dupe for Fever Tree (don't know the name, you know what I mean though) is just as good - I think their elderflower one is actually better. It's an excellent widely-available tonic. Greenalls is my favourite gin for G&T, but that's not widely available outside the UK.
My mother and I love a g&t with grapefruit! Particularly it really depends on the botanicals of the gin. We looooove Gunpowder Irish Gin and the Botanist with grapefruit. It is just so different and tends to work with certain gins better. My dad and I tried a local Edinburgh brand called Pickerings and a g&t with that and lime is just awful but with a grapefruit it is perfect. I'm so excited to try to make my own tonic for parents and see what they think
I do not envy you for your decision to directly reply to the weirdo commenters and their highly suspect science over on the Tonic vid, but I salute you and your dedication to posting.
Can i just say, kudos to you sir! I usually hate sponsorship but see them as a necessary evil of youtube. You not only took a cool sponsorship but made it something wonderful and exactly in line with the rest of your video to watch! Other youtubers should take a lesson!
Just a heads up about the "sugar per serving" comment: the serving sizes are likely quite different. Most large format (i.e. big bottles) beverages do them by 250mL (or whatever your old timey equivalent is) whereas the fever tree and probably the other one are 200mL bottles. A 16g/serving in 200mL would be 20g/250mL, so still drier, but closer than you would think based on sugar/serving
Greg, love the content as always. You putting angostura into everything is TOTALLY a meme by the way XD but I respect you going with what you legitimately enjoy and love/like XD XD. By the way, I think the angostura addition hit so hard this time that you turned into Sean Connery XD XD "that's faschinating" XD XD good work man, I love the series, and I love the video, as always! Long time fan!!
This was a wildly interesting episode! And I echo the other sentiments about how good the ad spot was this time - what a great cause and a great way to promote it. I love that you've been exploring different "drinks of summer," and I've been pondering what my drink for the summer is going to be. G&Ts had one, ritas had at least one, and mojitos certainly had one or two. I'm thinking whiskey smashes might be my drink this time, and it got me looking for a spec. I checked out your video from a while back (what a blast from the past, with the "I've never worked in a bar" open), and something occurred to me. You used to use gomme syrup in a lot of drinks in the older episodes, but I don't remember you using it much here lately. Do you still make and use gomme syrup for drinks these days?
I have a G&T variation that most people seem to love. It is for the sweet-toothed among us, but you can tone it down if that is not your thing. The recipe is simple and you can pre-mix it to take with you for a stupid-simple preparation (just like a normal G&T). This is the setup; three parts gin (I like Roku Gin for the added botanicals, but anything good should work), two parts Chambord Liqueur, one part limoncello liqueur. You can mix it all and bottle for later (I keep mine in the freezer, it is proof enough it does not freeze). When ready to drink mix with tonic to taste (50-50 or 1 mix to 2 tonic is what most people seem to like). If you like less sweet mix 3 parts gin and 1 part each of the others, you can also sub in a drier fruit liqueur if you have a personal favorite. Honestly I bet this is pretty close to your strawberry mix at the end. I am definitely going to have to try mine with rosemary, I bet it will be delish. If you ever do a "viewer recipes" episode consider mine thrown into the hat.
Despite what some of the comments say, I genuinely appreciate when you talk about both good medical advice and the history of colonization behind certain drinks.
Colonisation is pretty fabulous too. Practiced by the Seljuk Turks, Phoenicians, Macedonians, Vikings, Greeks, Manchus, Mongols, Malays, Javanese, Persians, Bantu, Inca, Vandals, both the Ostrogoths and Visigoths, Egyptians, Aztec, Arabs, Japanese, Russians, Carthaginians, Chinese, Vietnamese, Aryans, Burmese, and many others, not to mention internal colonisation. If you're reading this, there's the high likelihood you're the offspring of colonialism. You appreciate your life, don't ya?
@@gagamba9198 This is a bad argument that could be used to justify literally anything. Without the Rwandan Genocide, the development of Thalidomide, and the creation of the McRib, the world wouldn't have the exact right socioeconomic circumstances to cause your parents to reproduce at the exact time that resulted in your birth so you must support support those as well or you don't like living.
3 Ice cubes; 1.5 oz Plymouth Gin; 2 drops lime juice (from an eye dropper if possible); 1 GLASS BOTTLE (8 oz) Canada Dry or Schwepps Tonic. Put it in in that order and pour strongly to mix. No further stirring required.
My fave way of making a G&T is to shake my gin with ice and about an inch of pineapple cubed up. The pineapple takes a back seat, the gin shines through. One million percent going to be trying these ideas though. Already got stuff ordered for making my own tonic syrup.
The "sweeter" sensation of the G&T with the lime juice is likely the sour countering the bitter allowing the sweet that was already there to come through.
Elderflower liquor is great with a gin and tonic. Another good one is g&t with blueberry juice or elderberry. Also gin and tonic with cucumber is really good.
Hey, I was at a Buffalo Wild Wings today and I think they were advertising a Long Island Iced Tea made with Mountain Dew? Next time you do weird cocktails from a chain restaurant, that sure would be a thing to try!
As "simple" as a Gin&Tonic is on paper, with the way it has exploded on the market and the endless variety there now is of both Gins as well as Tonics, the combination possibilities are basically impossible to ever try and fairly compare.. But there certainly are some awesome bottled tonics on the market that would probably get a lot closer to the syrups used in this video.. But the primary factor for which Tonic and/or garnish to use is of course the gin used and its botanicals and even without any garnishes you can create an insane amount of taste variations 👌🏼 which is why, even as I get more "educated" in my drinks of choice, the G&T will always remain a timeless favorite 🍸💯
YES! I think what makes a drink a Great, a "Classic" is its ability to be versatile.. To hold up, while being tinkered and tweaked, yet still staying true to the original... And be good. Haha!
Just wanted to leave a comment and say that I appreciate the outstanding content you that create for your audience, you have got me interested into opening the door and exploring the world that is alcohol and making drinks! (promise to drink responsibly)
My go-to GnT 2 parts London Dry Gin of your choice. (I prefer Bombay Sapphire) 3 parts Schweppes Indian tonic water. 1 large cube of ice. 1 slice of cucumber. For a twist, 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters. Absolutely no lime in my GnT EVER.
Fever Tree has a "less sugar" variety (no artificial sweeteners, just less sugar overall) and it is the ONLY tonic I buy, it is amazing and all other tonics I've tried pale in comparison.
I have a rosemary plant I've been propagating for years and I make rosemary syrup with it every year. It's fantastic with gin and club soda and a splash of lime or grapefruit juice.
Greg, please do a video on flavored whiskey. They've become fairly popular as of recent and I've seen quite a few weird ones. Some examples include: Skrewball (peanut butter), Doughball (cookey dough) and the truly vile Wicked Pickle (pickle whiskey).
I made a Scandinavian summer GT which turned out pretty well. Put raspberries, European blueberries and blackberries in blackberry gin (if you are in Sweden, I suggest Göteborgs gin) and leave it for 24 hours. Use this with your favourite tonic. I used a rhubarb flavored one to keep with my theme. Garnish with some fresh raspberries, blueberries and blackberries for a nice visual flair. Make sure not to break any berries if you want a clear GT, which I think looks better.
Not everything you disagree with or are ignorant about is disinformation. The NIH has a published meta analysis showing early intervention with hydroxychloroquine in an outpatient setting is infact safe and effective at reducing the severity of COVID. Just because it became political doesn't make it untrue.
I worked days and nights and weekends to get one of those Chloroquine/Hydroxychloroquine studies up and running ASAP back at the start of Covidworld. We gave it a fair shake. We were one of the last ones standing when everybody else had given up on the stuff. Yeah, they were right to give up on it. It doesn't work.
It actually works incredibly well except all of those studies were based on people who were sick enough to be hospitalized. People at that stage have usually cleared the virus and are now degrading not from the virus but from a cytokine storm. At that point, the only drugs that will help them are immuno-suppresants, anti-inflammatories and anti-coagulants. Beyond the late timing. they were also using bizarre doses and using it alone, without zinc and other corollary treatments like ZPack, colchicine, heparin and doxycycline. Used early in the illness, along with corollary treatments, studies in countries around the world saw an 80% efficacy rate. Guess where the idea for its use to treat SARS-2 came from? The Virology Journal, Anthony Fauci's NIH/NIAID official journal, in it August 22, 2005 edition had an article titled "Chloroquine is a potent inhibitor of SARS coronavirus infection and spread." In it they state: "We report...that chloroquine has strong anti-viral effects on SARS-CoV infection of primate cells. These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage." The follow up stared that "concentrations of 10uM completely abolished SARS-CoV infection." and "chloroquine can effectively reduce the establishment of infection and spread of SARS-CoV." HCQ acts as a zinc ionophore that allows zinc atoms to enter the cytoplasm of the cell and disrupt the virus' RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) reproduction apparatus. This mechanism of its anti-viral action has been known for decades and through poorly designed and outright phony studies like those published in the Lancet and NEJM from phony companies like Surgisphere, they did everything they could to discredit its efficacy.
Oh, yeah, the gin & tonic episode. The one where I've seen that the nerd drinking dude I follow on UA-cam talking science better and more accurately than a good half of my country's politicians. Before any antivaxxer conpiracist answers me: I'm a pharmaceutical chemist, it's literally my field. Think twice.
After your Gin episode I got my parents hooked on old tom style gin and they now prefer it in their G&T. the extra herbal notes work really well. (edit, fever tree for the tonic if we can get it, big wedge of lime)
I'm an enormous fan of the G&T. One thing I like adding is a small amount of ginger in the form of a 3:1 tonic to ginger beer ratio, or better yet, a tablespoon of ginger syrup.
@@howtodrink technically everything regarding society is politics. And we (at least I) love your socially inclined vids as well as your extremely nerdy ones
@@cheaptricked3148 I've noticed that when people will say, "Stop making things political" it's generally just people saying, "Stop disagreeing with me and making me look bad."
When I was growing up on the coastal south, my parents and grandparents referred to tonic as quinine water. And I seem to remember it being on the label of the Schewpp's bottle, which was green glass.
Fuck yeah Greg, you tell'em. That was the episode that made me subscribe to you. (I mean I had watched a ton and probably was going to eventually but watching you pull out your homework convinced me I could mostly trust you)
The opening to this video. Beautiful. Not putting up with their crap. I actually like the snarky political stuff you say. Like slavery is bad in rum episode. But I’m sure viewers had issue with that as well
There is a Fever Tree version with almost no sugar and no artificial sweeteners. In EU they call it "Premium Dry". Only 4g sugar/100ml. I love that for a lot of Gin brands.
My personal G&T mix is 2oz Tanqueray, a dose of lime, and a bottle of Fever Tree over ice. It hits the spot, is refreshing, and other ppl seem to love it too. Being Canadian, I'll use Canada Dry when I can't get Fever Tree, but the ratios mean more care needs be taken while pouring, because the difference in volume of the packaging.
If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh I suggest going to the Jolly Botanist, they have every combination of Gin and Tonic you could think of with tons of variations for the garnish. It was the first time I tried a rosemary Gin and Tonic which is now one of my favorites. I will have to make my own with strawberry and black pepper though, they were out of strawberries at the time.
lol you just know they're gonna come after you for that little rant at the beginning. I've been trying to get that stuff through to people irl and online, it's just that so many of them have been conditioned to not just disagree, but to be weirdly hostile about it. I know you can handle yourself, but man...
I just love, love , love Greg! Thank you so much for a dose of clear thinking. In the old days we always called tonic quinine water. Or at least my mom did.
Schweppes tonic is head and shoulders above any other "grocery store" tonic. However, anything in a plastic bottle has to be fresh as it will go completely flat in about 6 months. Fever Tree makes an Indian Light version of their tonic which is less sweet and to my taste the best tonic on the market. I always use 2 ounces of gin, the 5.5 oz in a small Fever Tree bottle is the perfect amount for 1 G&T. Tanqueray is without a doubt the best gin for a G&T, it's not debatable. Lime is essential.
Gotta love how “leave your politics out of your content” is just code for “I’m unsubscribing because my politics and I gotta virtue signal to the other right wingers 🥺”
Not all of these anti-vaxxers are righties (mother is a nurse in the NHS and a Labour supporter but still is anti-vax, along with my sister also being a stout Labour supporter), but my god do these lot like to make a fuss and signal to everyone else.
I used G&T as a therapeutic the whole pandemic and didn’t get so much as the sniffles. So for me I call it a win, especially since until just 4 years ago I couldn’t stand anything with him in it.
I was genuinely blown away by how good these drinks came out. Also, I hope you enjoy the visit from Ranger Greg in this one, more of that to come!
There's a Typo in the episode: When making the syrup use 500ml of *water* like I say, not gin like the text says. Sorry!

Greg please, for the love of God, up your gin game a bit. Give a bottle of Monkey 47 a try. I beg you!
tonic mix link?
Love a G&T with dripping springs artisan gin
One of my favourite sponsored UA-cam ads ever:
- Greg does dress up
- shows us a drink and how to make it, which is why we’re here
- lovely b roll of bears and nature
- product gives money to conservation projects
i agree! perhaps only bested by internet comment etiquette's ads lol
I was confused but pleased - I hadn’t seen the cut to commercial so I was like “G&T with whiskey?”
And not just 'a portion of proceeds' but a declared amount.
@@rcevey2 and a significant amount. $1.50 per bottle is quite a lot.
Some of his Ads are rather good, I agree.
I think he is in my top five list, not number one, but he is up there.
I disagree Greg. I have COVID as I watch this and I think a G&T would help me immensely.
Lol. Get better soon dude!
Well, the alcohol would certainly numb you to the "no fucks given" point. It would be treating at least one symptom. :D
Get better!
I have COVID real bad and got the antiviral meds so I can't enjoy one as I recover:(
@@GetOffMyLog I’m really sorry to hear that. Get plenty of rest and take care of yourself. We’ll enjoy those G&Ts in no time when we recover!
Have a speedy recovery 😂 hope that G&T helps haha
Careful about grapefruit and quinine.
There are drug interactions between compounds in grapefruit that slow the catalytic breakdown of quinine and many other medications. Although the effective amount for large differences is often referenced at about one grapefruits worth of ingestion, that does not mean it has no effects at lower amounts.
Just at least check estimated amounts of each in your own circumstances in planning to make these, and how much of them you drink.
Good rule of thumb is if you are on any medication and want it to work, stay away from anything grapefruit. And importantly now, I’ll point out that includes birth control.
alcohol and meds have never been a grand combo to begin with
Grapefruit is wild because this isn't even an uncommon issue with grapefruit either.
@@Virginiafox21 that's the point of activated charcoal
it's amazing how perfectly you crystallized what you wanted from this channel right from the get-go. Most creators have a few off sloppy videos before hitting their stride, but you nailed the formula and came out sprinting. I remember back when you were a smallish channel with a few tens of thousands of subs thinking "man this guy's production work is so far ahead of most channels with ten times his subs". It's so great to see you flourishing and having fun making these great videos.
ngl it's kind of intimidating
gets my perfectionism going
Also, if you don't wanna mess with quinine dosage/can't get cinchona bark, Quassia bark I found is a good substitute. It has no actual quinine, but it's active compound quassine has that same astringent bitterness you're looking for. It is a lot stronger though, so I'd substitute it in a 1:10 ratio in the syrup recipe, give or take.
I absolutely love your show, but I have to limit myself to no more than 3 episodes per day or I start feeling an overwhelming urge to visit a liquor store and start mixing :D
I'm always happy when i have all the things on hand after an episode. Doesn't happen too often, but often enough.
Thats why i only watch his show when im already drinking lol
If you're looking for another twist - I went to a London distillery and was served a G&T with a chamomile syrup (or maybe tea bitters?) included. It was incredibly refreshing, especially after a long day of walking around the city.
Sounds amazing for an evening drink. I'm loving the idea in my head even before trying it.
I wonder how lovely a g&t would be made with the tea infused gin from the marTEAni Greg made many moons ago.
Ooh- that does sound good. I wonder what the ratio was in it, because that does sound like a drink you could screw up.
Chamomile is amazing in drinks and desserts. Subtle and herby. I put it in whipped cream for strawberries and cake. Magic. Really good with rum or gin.
Can I ask the name of the distillery? I'm heading there in a couple weeks for a study abroad and I'd love to try some interesting drinks.
That sounds foul.
sounds like "bartender" to me: ie. Bartender was on break, and the Manager looked up a long island recipe and couldn't find half the ingredients :D
@@lordkell1986 I wish, it was the main bartender and when I complained he said "well that's how we make them here." Then he remade it normally...
Lmao that’s like the time I went to a bar and asked for a rum punch and got coconut rum with cranberry juice. NOT pleasant and NOT a punch lmao
My usual "bad" bartender experience is I order a whiskey and soda and have to stop them when they begin making a whiskey and Coke. I live in a college town.
Not sure if you want to add 1/2 a liter of London Dry Gin to your tonic mixture as the on screen text suggested. I know you said water :)
By far my favorite drink, usual go to is Botonist + Fever Tree with a touch of lime (occasionally grapefruit bitters).
The actual recipe calls for water.
God I love how Greg will integrate sponsers into the episode and make a drink, so cool
I loved you description of the forest in the gin and tonic. I grew up in a forest in Michigan with juniper bushes and cedar trees, once I turned drinking age I fell in love with gin cuz it taste like home. my favorite is the local Knickerbocker Gin made in Holland
Are you familiar with Detroit City Distillery? They have a gin with pine extracts!
i'm gonna be real, Greg's advertisements are actually worth sitting through
Honestly love videos like this, taking a 'simple' drink and showing just how variable they can be is just fascinating to witness.
That's why the G&T is the only choice for a titty bar
Would you ever consider doing a G&T matrix like you did for margaritas and manhattans? I'd be curious to see if there is an actual difference between the gin and tonic combos. The margarita video is so interesting to me. (Also I desperately want an Old Faithful cocktail of my own...)
I do believe that was decided the moment Greg counted the bottles of tonic.
A friend and I did this one night, got a bunch of different flavors of fevertree tonics and a couple different gins. Really fun night, recommend trying it
@@rebeccametcalf4448 what was the result ?
@@jeroboam4486 a really fun night apparently
Having drank a 4x4 gin and tonic matrix, I will tell you what gin and what tonic you use makes a HUGE difference.
I really adore your ad spots lately where you make cocktails. The one in this episode made me smile a bunch and it was really fun. You have a knack for making most anything an entertaining treat, and I appreciate that skill of yours very much!!
Greg should put all of these videos into a playlist titled "The Quest for the Drink of Summer" 🤣
But really, G&T is one of my favorites and I'm fascinated by the idea of making my own tonic!
Drink is such a fantastic bar, even if they lost a few of their best bartenders through COVID.
Ahh, a refreshing aperitif of "quit your bullsh*t" juice before the featured drink? Good idea, and excellent episode too!
So happy that Greg finally decided to address politics vis-a-vis the gin and tonic. 👏

I love drinking iced tonic water just by itself on a hot day! I find the diet versions even better than the regular because of the reduced sweetness.
I just made my first ever drink with actual bar tools. It was a whiskey sour according to your 3 fav whiskey cocktail vid. It was extremely good. I used rittenhouse rye because I had it and like it. Love your stuff and I’ll be making more drinks soon 😊
Welcome to the club, wait until you can't buy drinks at most restaurants because most bars are awful
You'd think so. I ordered a G&T at a yacht club of all places and got a Bombay Sapphire and 7up.
At least you got something that tastes good.
Ooooh
I went the majority of my adult life thinking that a Gin and Tonic was an "Old Person Drink" for whatever reason. It wasn't until last summer that I tried one, and its now probably one of my all time favorite summer drinks. Light, cold, refreshing.... yum. I'm really lazy though, and I've only ever made it with Canada Dry Tonic.
I love Canada Dry or Schweppes
I was born and raised in Montana and the old faithful will be the REAL drink of the summer now
The thing that frustrates me the most about the people leaving those comments about your other video "aging poorly" is that even if Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine had turned out to be effective treatments, your video DID NOT assert that they weren't!
🙌
I have a friend that throws about a bar spoon or two of St. Germain in his G&T. The floral notes of the St. Germain just pulls everything together and does not take a single thing away from either the gin or the tonic. Really worth a try. Awesome video as always! I look forward to trying a smoked G&T.
One other suggestion for the "Drink of Summer" contest is flavored mojitos. The bar I work at does a strawberry one and a blackberry/peach one, both of which people seem to enjoy.
Try apple, too! Apple and lime go really well together :D
(Not 100% sure how well that works with the rum though, I only drink mocktails)
I'm glad you at least thought to mention Schweppes. That's my go-to for a G&T along with Tangueray and a little lime juice.
My home G&T is:
- Prairie Organic Gin
- Lemon Juice
- Lime Sparkling Water
- Lemon Wedge or Peel
- Ice
When in Okinawa, I use to use shikuwasa instead of regular lime. It made all the difference.
For stuff sold in EU (or at least in Finland) the bottle has to show contents/100ml. Some may also show "per serving"/per bottle.

I like it when Internet Drinky Man gets after people for their incorrect information and lack of due diligence. Keep doing what you're doing Greg.
The very best Gin and Tonic you can get from Xoriguer Mahon Gin which is spanish. It comes from a green bottle and it rocks.
Not being a fan of London Dry gin, I quite like a G&T with Hendricks, and Fever Tree is my preferred, easy-to-find tonic.
Hendricks is supposed to be served with a slice of cucumber
Same here Hendricks is my go to for a G&T
The Aldi Harrison’s (their Hendricks) is great and half the price.
I'm a diehard gin drinker, and I won't even touch most London dry. Scottish gins have infinitely more character.
My go-to GnT
2 parts London Dry Gin of your choice. (I prefer Bombay Sapphire)
3 parts Schweppes Indian tonic water.
Love this video countering disinformation and so informative. This made me realise again why I decided to subscribe so bloody good
Not everything you disagree with or are ignorant about is disinformation. The NIH has a published meta analysis showing early intervention with hydroxychloroquine in an outpatient setting is infact safe and effective at reducing the severity of COVID. Just because it became political doesn't make it untrue.
I like the beginning rant. Most people are to scared to do something like that, so I applaud your resolve.
These inhibitory effects are observed when the cells are treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic advantage." The follow up stared that "concentrations of 10uM completely abolished SARS-CoV infection." and "chloroquine can effectively reduce the establishment of infection and spread of SARS-CoV."
HCQ acts as a zinc ionophore that allows zinc atoms to enter the cytoplasm of the cell and disrupt the virus' RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) reproduction apparatus. This mechanism of its anti-viral action has been known for decades and through poorly designed and outright phony studies like those published in the Lancet and NEJM from phony companies like Surgisphere, they did everything they could to discredit its efficacy.
Just got my drinkmate and I absolutely understand why it's just the best on the market.
In on the Fix , got it.
Lol those conspiracy theorists don't even think once.
You shouldn't issue challenges like that. I'm a professional troll, and I almost jumped at it. Lucky for both of us, we're on the same side. ;)
Read the test docs that Pfizer was forced to release, instead of hiding them for 75 years, like they wanted and maybe think again:)
That was unnecessary
Gin and Tonic is problably my favourite drink ever, this is the perfect video for me
After your Gin episode I got my parents hooked on old tom style gin and they now prefer it in their G&T. the extra herbal notes work really well.
POLITICS? In my DRINKS? Yes please. Keep it coming.
there's no politics here though
@@howtodrink Insane that basic facts or factchecking has become political to some.
@@howtodrink technically everything regarding society is politics. And we (at least I) love your socially inclined vids as well as your extremely nerdy ones
@@howtodrink I agree. I was referring to folks who have made basic common sense a weird political thing. 😂
(I mean I had watched a ton and probably was going to eventually but watching you pull out your homework convinced me I could mostly trust you)
"Here's how to make this special tonic: Add all these very exotic ingredients, simmer, and that's it!" Looks like I'll be using Fever Tree ;)
"Take a long step back". Grave advice for antivaxers and with perfect delivery on your part.
my favourite gin for a G&T is Roku! tonic realllly highlights the interesting floral notes in it, it's a beautifully refreshing drink
YESSS ROKU. beautiful gin. more people should know about roku.
Daaaammmmnnnn. Served trumpers up proper lololol
As a scientist, thank you for the disclaimer at the beginning! And great episode, as always!
Greg standing up for SCIENCE.
Prove something with science? POLITICAL!!!
