    A lot of dealers won't give an OTD number by email. I just tried here in central NJ

      That my friend is call their playing you. Try to be more assertive and example would be like, you need to tell them, if you want my business answered all my questions or the FTC would be paying you a visit for not disclosing information I the paying customer or consumer needs to know.
      Assume that they are not disclosing the OTP with you because they are hiding fake fees they know you would negotiate to have them removed, and are manipulating to a degree to get you in their hook 🪝 and could be potentially keeping you from buying the car you want from another dealer.
      I notice this recently to a small degree when I ask for the OTD price.

      Don't limit yourself to NJ. Shipping a car is cheap. Its easy to save enough money on a negotiation to more than make up for the shipping costs.
      Also, try calling them before you ask for OTD over email. Salesmen are paid on commission. They aren't going to put much effort in if they think you're just kicking tires.

    I've been trying to use this to buy a CPO but here in California around SantaMonica-WestLA area is pretty much unsuccessful. All dealers have add ons installed and prefer to lose the deal before taking them out. And from around 10 dealerships only 3 agreed to send the OTD number via text or email.

    None of this is working in the Orlando area. I had Auto Nation Toyota in Winter Park gave me an OTD price of $2,300 off MSRP which included $1,000 of it being a rebate if I do my financing with them. Then tacked on were weather tech mats at $299, electronic filing fee of $199, Dealer Services fee of $995 and Reg/Tag/Title fees of $400. I e-mailed them I was working with several other dealers. He e-mailed me back, said thank for letting him know and deleted all the e-mails. Another on Toyota of Orlando just gave me the MSRP minus $1,500 and refuses to send an out the door price using their canned e-mail response twice that they were working on their very best dealer price and they don't lose sales on price as their sales people aren't on commission and when can I come in.

      @KevinHunter I want to second what this guy said. I have had virtually NO luck using email as a negotiating. Car dealers in Texas simply won't give you much information. It's always "when can you come in?"

    • @kungfoochicken08
      @kungfoochicken08 15 днів тому

      @@GloryOnHigh Call them. They're more likely to talk to you over the phone. They just get a bunch of tire-kickers through websites and emails.
      Also, if the car is more than 20-30k, it might be worth it to shop nationwide and just have it shipped to you. There's a few inspection companies that will go to the dealership for you to inspect the car and send a report. I paid $300 for this back in 2022 and then it was another $300 to have the car shipped from Orlando to NC.

My wife and I put down a $500 deposit for a Volvo EX30, but will have to go through a local dealer some time in June 2024 to finalize the purchase. I've been ramping up on all your videos and learning a lot, especially around FTC rules and junk fees. I have heard horror stories about "market adjustment" fees being tacked onto reserved cars in recent years when the customer attempts to take delivery. Do you have any suggestions for folks like us when it comes to such reservations, what to watch out for, and whether they is any leverage that we have when it comes to avoiding additional fees?

Also, view Kevin's, "Game Plan Your 2021 Car Purchase" I did this and got a great deal and was at most $2,600 below the highest OTD offer.

    • @dsbennett
      @dsbennett 14 днів тому

      Paint protection and VIN etching are scams. Just refuse to pay for the add-ons because they way overcharge you and because it’s illegal to force them on you. A dealer told me they add VIN etching and break light flashing to all their cars “and it’s only a few hundred dollars.” I replied “Window etching kits are $19 and brake light flasher kits are $8. I won’t pay for that.”

    My biggest question - is a junk fee technically anything other than the sale price of the car and the state taxes + fees? Or are there legitimate fees they can charge that are not against the FTC rules? The biggest ambiguity is doc fees. They're regulated by states, so therefore seem legally fine? But that's still a bogus fee that's just slapped in there at the last second.

    • @kungfoochicken08
      @kungfoochicken08 15 днів тому

      They can charge any fee as long as its conspicuously noted in all of their advertisements. Some dealers have started to do this already. It's a junk fee, but as long as they make it obvious, I don't really have a problem with it. The real problem is the dealers that price their cars low and then hit you with $4,500 in "reconditioning fees" and "document fees" and an "Auto Bond" fee right before you're ready to sign. I just had a dealer try to hit me with a $1,999 fee for "reconditioning" a car that has 6,000 miles on it. Another dealer that requires I pay them $1,500 for installing lo jack on a Tesla. It seems that throwing 3-5k in junk fees onto every car is the norm right now.

      It's always a good idea to do a build-your-own online for any vehicle you are interested in. If there's an additional cost for a certain exterior or interior color, it will be stated by the manufacturer. If the dealership is trying to add an additional fee for a particular color, they are being dishonest. As for market adjustments, NEVER; no one should be paying a so-called market adjustment fee for any vehicle. If a dealer is trying to bamboozle you with this ridiculousness, walk or run away as fast as you can! • @KevinHunter
      @KevinHunter  9 місяців тому

      Right now i'd use the FTC CARS rule to defeat those things. They aren't legal under this new rule, and every dealer needs to be on notice that they could easily become a court exhibit for the FTC in the months leading up to July 30th. I's simply tell the dealer "Your car deal is NOT in compliance with FTC's CARS rule! You know and I know that you can't do that!"

    • @JeffDietzphoto
      @JeffDietzphoto 9 місяців тому

      sorry no i don't mean the dealer mark ups, I mean from the car manufacturers. Especially looking at Lexus and BMW like I did the other day, every single thing in the car almost was an add on option feature. So this one car would have the upgraded radio but not the moon roof and would have this type of seat and these kind of wheels. Then the other wouldn't have that but it would have another thing or even the same size wheels but slightly different.
      And most of the time it's little features not big ones. So it's sort of like when you go for a price match at best buy and you show them walmart, and it's the same model but has one extra button or they call it the 567L instead of the 567 which is just branding for walmart so they won't match it.
      Like it's very hard these days to find two cars at a place or any place that have all the exact same options on it

      You won’t beat it. It will be baked into the final price. Now instead of getting that sweet 8K off MSRP, you’ll get 4K off. It’s just moving money around. It’s a business and not a charity. There’s a reason you don’t purchase at invoice when you buy ANYTHING else. Not eggs, not gas, nothing.

    What happens if no dealers are willing to take off the junk fees after you bring up the ftc cars rule via email? Do you go into the dealer with the best price still and attempt to have the fees removed in the finance office once they’ve invested more time into you?

    • @KevinHunter
      @KevinHunter  7 місяців тому +2

      That's not an all bad strategy. Just be prepared to walk out if it doesn't work! That said, finance officers get very nervous with a buyer who keeps saying "So, you're telling me these junk fees are mandatory or i can't buy the car?" Say it again and again. Notice how their words change every time they answer and they start choosing their responses more carefully. They can sense a trap, and get scared. Throw in the comment: This is illegal according to FTc CARS rule! Are you say an illegal fee is mandatory b y your dealership? Keep pushing their buttons and they will eventually cave in.

      Broaden your net. There are thousands of dealers in NE. Shipping is very cheap because you're so close. I went through 30 dealerships before I worked out a price I liked. You can also just call them. They're much more likely to respond to calls because they'll hear that you're serious. There's a lot of tire-kickers that email them or send messages from online car marketplaces. They only get paid if they sell a car, so they're not going to put much effort into you if they think you aren't serious.
