    For those who are wondering, you will need 24mm of 6 or 12 points socket wrench to open the oil filter housing.

      Good old Kia, why not make it the same size as the oil drain plug? So frustrating… so Kia did my last oil change and made it so tight I couldn’t even loosen it with an adjustable wrench for fear it would strip it. I had to go buy a 24mm socket. Ridiculous!!!

    The FILTER drain plug needs to be turned 90 degrees after removing the cotter pin. Only then can it be removed for draining the filter housing.

    Great vid! On the 2.4L and 1.6L Hyundai/Kia oil pans I wish they designed the plug area so all the oil drains out. The plug is up too far so there is always some used oil left in the bottom of the pan. I let the oil drain overnight then rock the car backwards and fwds to get the last of the oil out the best I can. The older 2.0L oil pans were designed so the drain plug was at the lowest point so all the old oil would drain out on its own. Also do use a new crush washer and don't over torque the plug as the 2.4L pans are prone to hairline cracks around the drain plug. 30 lb/fts is all you need with a new crush washer.

    The little drain and pin thingy in the oil filter housing looks like a great area to leak and possibly cause a serious engine problem.

      25-33 ft/lbs for the drain plug, always use a new crush washer. 18 ft/lbs for the filter housing. It feels like it's cross threaded the whole way off and on but that's the design. It doesn't have to be super tight just seated as the o-ring is the seal. Most new filters like Wix come with a new o-ring and crush washer for the drain plug.

    How many quarts of oil do it take?

  • @kevingibbons
    @kevingibbons 2 роки тому +1

    Great video, very concise and to the point. 3 quick questions:
    1) The O'Reilly filter kit I believe comes with a new crush washer as well for the drain plug? Just confirming, as it does appear to show one in the kit contents.
    2) How many quarts of oil per oil change in the 1.6L turbo Hybrid?
    3) For the documentation part and keeping Kia happy on the Warranty -- how are you doing this? Snapping photos of the actual Oil/Filter receipts, and simply notating the date/mileage of oil change?
    Thanks again for the vid, and any info you can provide on the above questions.

    • @RivermanTV-
      @RivermanTV-  2 роки тому +1

      1) Yes it does. If I left that out, it was unintentional. I do change the crush washer with every oil change.
      2) The information that I am seeing calls for 5.8L or 6.1 quarts for a service fill.
      3) For the documentation, I am keeping receipts of oil/filter purchases as well as documenting date and mileage. I have also taken it to the dealer once since they offer the change for free. However, the wait time is so insane that I probably won't be doing that much so I'll rely on my own documentation.

      @@RivermanTV- Many thanks for the quick reply Riverman! Prior to your reply, I downloaded the 2023 Sportage Hybrid owners manual to see if volume of Oil per oil change is referenced.
      According to the Manual, they're calling for 5.07 US quarts (4.8L). Here's a screenshot: i.imgur.com/hpsELXJ.png
      Is the 5.8L (6.1 quarts) volume number referenced elsewhere?
      And 2 final things...
      1) With this style filter where it's fully encased in a housing, are you doing any kind of "pre-fill" with fresh oil in the housing (in effect soaking the filter) prior to reattaching to the vehicle? I know with a more traditional style filter, a lot of guys will fill the filter with new oil before installing. Although doing that is kind of subjective, and you def see varying opinions.
      2. With both the filter housing & drain plug, are you tightening to any specific torque spec? Or are you just tightening to snug?
      Thanks again!

    • @RivermanTV-
      @RivermanTV-  2 роки тому +1

      @@kevingibbons good find! I referenced my manual when doing the oil change in the video but couldn't remember the volume it called for. I was looking through the car's specs on a website that listed just about everything. But clearly they were off.
      Because of the filter/housing design, I don't think it's necessary to do any sort of pre fill. Even if you did, it seems like all you would be doing is filling the "reservoir" that is the housing before oil flows to and through it. If there was some sort of definitive practice suggested by Kia I'd do it, but I don't know that there is.
      As far as torquing the drain plug, I set my torque wrench to about 30 pounds. This is based on specs found on comparable Kia/Hyundai models.
      Hopefully soon there will be more information available when it comes to torque specs and other important information for this vehicle. I had a '13 Mazda before this car and could easily find service manuals that had all this info. Not sure if Kia/Hyundai make those available for their vehicles.

    what kia usa has to say about servicing your own car rather than certified shop vs the warranty?

    • @RivermanTV-
      @RivermanTV-  2 роки тому +2

      The key is documentation. So long as you keep receipts for the correct synthetic oil/OEM filter along with mileage logs, you are properly documenting your changes at the recommended intervals. Not changing oil causes very noticeable issues that are easily traced back to not changing oil. Any other drivetrain problems covered under warranty are generally not related to oil in any way.
      I'm sure a dealer will tell you otherwise but they obviously have a little different motivation for doing so.
      If your dealer offers free oil changes, by all means take advantage of them. If they don't, I'd be saving my money and ensuring the proper oil is used in my car.
