  • Episode 1 'Sunset Sound Re-Created'
In 1989 Tom Petty tracked the album "Full Moon Fever" at Sunset Sound Recording Studio in Hollywood, CA. "Free Fallin'" was the opening track of that Tom Petty album which was also his debut solo record in 1989. The song was written by Petty and his writing partner for the album, Jeff Lynne, and features Lynne on backing vocals and bass guitar. The duo wrote and recorded the single in two days, making it the first song completed for Full Moon Fever.
"Free Fallin'" is one of Petty's most famous tracks as well as his highest - and longest - charting song. It peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in January 1990, becoming his third and final top ten hit. Petty explained in an interview with Billboard magazine that he and Jeff Lynne were sitting around trying to come up with a song, and Lynne got him to say "free falling". The next day they recorded the song. Petty did not write the song about a specific person, but instead about what he saw during his frequent drives along Ventura Boulevard.
"Free Fallin'" is widely regarded as one of Petty's best songs. Billboard and Rolling Stone both ranked the song number four on their lists of the greatest Tom Petty songs,[8][9] while WatchMojo considers it to be Tom Petty's best song.[10]
The band on the original session was..
Tom Petty - lead & backing vocals, 12-string acoustic guitar
Mike Campbell - 12-string electric guitar
Jeff Lynne - acoustic guitar, bass, synthesizer, backing vocals
Phil Jones - drums and tambourine
On Ep. 1 of Sunset Re-Created Nashville Singer Songwriter Erin Webb & Producer/Songwriter Drew Dempsey strip the famous song down for their recreation.

I enjoyed it very much, Jazz has always reinterpreted older tunes to newer versions as a model of play. How much push back was noted when Miles Davis 'Porgy and Bess’ was released in 1958, but I am glad it was ignored. 👍

unfortunately she destroys the word painting with her use of suspensions where they should not be, and so on. melisma is an affect for emphasis not to be placed on every single phrase.

      Miles Davis quotes:
“Don't play what's there; play what's not there.”
“Do not fear mistakes - there are none.”
“…Music is always changing. It changes because of the times and the technology that's available, the material that things are made of, like plastic cars instead of steel. So when you hear an accident today it sounds different, not all the metal colliding like it was in the forties and fifties. Musicians pick up sounds and incorporate that into their playing, so the music that they make will be different.”

Beautiful song. When you can strip a song down to its essence and still move the listener, you have a winner!

Why can't singers just leave the melody alone? You don't need to add all that "movement" into a great, simple melody.

Amazing voice.. perfectly mixed... unfortunately it didn't do it for me as there was far too much vocal movement introduced to stay true to the song in my amateur opinion. However listening to music for 45 years qualifies me as a pro in that regard..😊
