  • hi guys! this video is in Polish, so make sure to turn the subtitles on!
I teamed up with the Royal Castle in Warsaw to make a video for all the kids and highschoolers stuck at home this winterbreak. If you're one of them, well, this one's for you too!
"Ferie po królewsku" (which roughly translates to "A Royal Winter Break") is a project in which Polish castles and museums provide unique online content. You can check it out by visiting social media and websites of these noble institutions:
    ✨Warsaw Royal Castle
    ✨Kraków Royal Castle
    ✨Sandomierz Royal Castle
    ✨Łazienki Królewskie Museum
    ✨Malbork Castle Museum
    ✨Lublin Castle Museum
    ✨Salt Mine Museum in Kraków/Wieliczka

And it’s not just in those countries. When I’m in France, I become more Italian because the language is closer; If I can’t think of a word in french, I’ll think the Italian one first. When I’m with Americans, I go super English (partly because Americans love it 😉)

ok this is the best chance i got to be a nerd for Canaletto. I'm not polish but i'm italian so i studied him in my art history classes. this guy. THIS GUY cracked the code when it comes to landscaping cities. he created a human sized optic chamber (that was later used make. you know cameras) to project the landscape on his canvas. he made perfect sketches and use them to make hyper realistic paintings. he was from venice and he made paintings that look like pictures. and then he moved to warsaw. and painted the entire historical center and most of the city in general. and those paintings are so fucking accurate that after warsaw was bombed during ww2 they built it back. using his paintings as reference. it's like. so incredible. i just. i love art history so much

But, do we speak about same Canaletto? Because there were two of them: the older one, Antonio Canale called Canaletto to, who worked in Italy in general. And there were the second one, I believe - nephew of the former one - Bernardo Belotto called Canaletto, who left Italy to reach the Russian emperor's court, but stayed half way in Poland. The trouble is, that they were both landscape painters so they are often mistaken.

There's actually a few studies in linguistics that show that even though it may seem like more syllables or words are being uttered in another language (i.e. it seems like it is being spoken very fast) or vice versa - the same amount of semantic information is usually transferred on average per 10sec or per min. This is measured for average conversations - obviously there are phrases and words in every language that make a mess in translation - but on average this mess goes both ways.
In other words, if you want to say 'drape the fabric around your shoulders and attach it with some kind of pin' in English, Czech, and Japanese - it will take the speakers roughly the same amount of time to say - even though there may be a vastly different number of words or syllables involved - meaning it will sound faster or slower to foreign listeners. There are obviously faster and slower speakers (age and gender sometimes seem to be linked here) in every language as well - but when measured and averaged out across a wide sample it seems most people communicate the same amount of information in the same amount of time regardless of which language they are using.
(This is the article where i originally saw this concept and it links to the relevant studies - www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2019/09/people-speak-faster-less-efficient-languages/597391/)
