    Like any other personality categorization, the love languages can be useful when you don't take it too far. The book itself tells you that pretty much everyone needs some of everything and that it's a generalization. But these five categories cover most of it, and most people have one or two of them that matter more than the others. It's always nice to pay attention to what makes someone feel loved, and how they try to communicate their love to you, whether or not you categorize them this way. Having these named gives people a framework for thinking and talking about it.
    Here's an example. Acts of service are number one for me by far, and my husband most values words of affirmation. People hear this as, "I do all the work, then thank him and call it even," but that's not even close. They work both ways, right? I default to showing love through service. My husband, on the other hand, hates chores more than most. Plus, he's a man of routine, so he particularly despises doing chores outside of his regular schedule. Acts of service generally aren't natural for him. Luckily, it's natural for me to appreciate what he does accordingly.
    But he doesn't mind small, quick tasks. So he makes a point of doing things like making tea for me. Little things mean a ton to me. I know to express my appreciation appropriately, and then he feels like a hero.
    No, you don't need the love languages to learn about each other, but they can make it easier. The book helped my husband understand me _and_ himself, which helped our communication overall. It's meant to be used as a tool, not as a perfect relationship fixer. For a lot of people, it can help when it's used that way.

      Agree completely- I'd not heard of it before but recently I've had an argument with my partner and the content of our problem was essentially the love language idea, I see love as service, my partner wants explicit affirmations.

    Yeah I agree with lots of people in the comments. Love languages is just about understanding more about them and their partner. You don’t have to change much, but it helps to know how your partner tries to express their love for you and vice versa; it helps both parties feel appreciated more often and can help stop resentment from building up, just a little but

    The whole love languages thing has actually helped me in my relationships, I am autistic and have trouble reading people and what people want unprompted and reading all this pseudoscientific love language stuff has worked for me as it gives me scripts I can use to express how I feel about my partner. For example I really do not like people touching me and vice versa so even if I feel overstimulated I caress their arm to show that I am not upset with them but with how my skin feels. They care very much about physical touch so I make that compromise and am happy with it. In this way our love languages do not interact

    • @snakespreader

    I really do like listening to these guys but boy can I tell they are dads. I mean everyone appreciates all the love languages but the point is that some people appreciate one over another and knowing that can make the relationship stronger. This knowledge is also a perfect way of understanding your partner and show appreciation in a way that will be more meaningful instead of buying flowers for a partner that would enjoy it but might enjoy back rub or a clean house.

    I'm sorry pflax but what? Of course you can alter your behaviour to suit someone's patterns better. The love languages suffer from being vague for sure but how is an awareness and attempt at better communication ever going to be a bad idea? Love languages are just a simplistic way of getting the message that different people like different forms of affection across and being aware of that is only a good thing.

    • @KuueenKumi
      @KuueenKumi 2 роки тому +2

      I think he meant that some people are just really set in their ways, and some people just aren't capable of changing, and if you want someone to change a very significant part of themselves in order to stay with them, maybe you should just move on? It is incredibly vague, and he took it to its extreme interpretation, which is very valid, however.

    The dad's totally missed the point of love languages and dismissed them, and then perfectly described acts of service and quality time. They're not strategies for fixing a broken relationship or changing your personality, they're just a thing that can help a couple understand and learn about each other and yourself more, which can then be used to be better to each other. Particularly about something that can be difficult to put into words like trying to explain the reasons you love someone
