  • Time to nip up another old County top, this week we chose the 646ft summit of Rutland, Cold Overton park, We did a 7.5 mile circuit from Oakham, not expecting much but it turned out to be one of the best so far..
Rutland, archaically Rutlandshire, is a county in the East Midlands of England. It borders Leicestershire to the north and west, Lincolnshire to the north-east, and Northamptonshire to the south-west. Oakham is the largest town.
The geography of Rutland is characterised by low, rolling hills, the highest of which is a 646 ft point in Cold Overton Park. In the 1970s a large artificial reservoir, Rutland Water, was created in the centre of the county. It is now a nature reserve, serving as an overwintering site for wildfowl and a breeding site for ospreys. The older buildings in the county are built from local limestone or ironstone, and many have roofs of Collyweston stone slate or thatch.
We started the walk in the county town of Oakham, a town we would like to revisit sometime.Tourist attractions in Oakham include All Saints' Church and Oakham Castle. Another historic feature is the open-air market held in the town's market place every Wednesday and Saturday. Nearby is the Buttercross with an octagonal stone-slate roof and the wooden stocks - both Grade I listed buildings. In August 2023, it was announced that Oakham would be home to a memorial statue for the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Great horse video, thought I was watching “Horse & Hound”. So good to see Karen waiting obediently at the rail crossing and not chancing death by running across. The river Gwosh was truly magnificent but would have been better with the poem. Wonderful avoiding horse skills from Karen, you never, ever trust animals. Superb watching Karen negotiate the mud, extremely entertaining. Great County Top but would have been better if Karen had stood on top of it. Nice to see Karen getting the round in, there should be more women like Karen in this world. I’m giving this a resounding FIVE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Well done to you both.

Thanks Mike...The lady in front of me at the Railway crossing was not Karen, she was miles behind me as i had a burst of energy and left her behind gawping in shop windows...It was however Karen by the rear end of the Horse, very wary about walking behind Horses as we had a pony kick out at us once, bloody feisty little thing it was...And yes you were right, it was very nice to see Karen put her hand in her pocket and get the drinks in, something that very rarely happens....Thanks for the resounding 5 stars..

Smashing bit of B Roll to get us started there Steven, really set the scene for this hike perfectly and the tone of the day ❤ Rutland, don’t think I’ve ever been so this is all new to me. Can make out the Water yes, wow, those clouds are moving fast, really is “blowy”. River Gwosh, great name, what a belter, its name does suggest we might be seeing a bigger river, one with gosh value! No poem Karen? 😂 well done John Clare, lovely words. Hanging on for dear life to traverse the mud, ah yes! A private land trig,is there any better? Beautiful trig, in lovely quality. Well done on ticking these nine off so quickly. Enjoyed every second of that, very relaxing!

Cheers folks...this was our first visit here and had no idea what to expect...we were well impressed, the villages some of the most beautiful we have seen anywhere, it's so laid back and sleepy, i could easily settle down there..i thought Karen was going to hit the roof when i told her the trig was on private land, but she took it in her stride...mind you she didn't hang about crossing the fence back to the public footpath...thanks.

    A lovely stroll round Rutland.
I got all excited at the end when I saw that pub. I got even more excited when I saw you both go in and then you were at the bar. It ended far too suddenly as I wanted a run down on the beer and maybe a bit of poetry chucked in for good measure.
Too many horses and not enough beer.
    Lovely to see Karen out.

I do not mind getting mud off my boots after a walk through a field it's a cow pats that bother me. Friendly looking horse but I would not have fancied walking directly behind him - yes, they do kick out. Lovely looking church and the village as well to be fair and even better getting a fly by of horses and traps! Well deserved pint I would say - Merry Christmas to you both, cheers Alan
