    I’m learning welding and today was the first time I touched galvanized steel... somehow the back of my pants right behind the knee caught the splatter.
    The instructor and a few classmates with welding experience said that welding galvanized material sucks, I completely agree with them.
    Obviously experience with it will make it better, but I got a hunch that it’s gonna always suck to work with.
    EDIT: now that I’m further in the video and seeing the differences, I’d like to point out I DID NOT prep. I have a feeling he didn’t have us prep intentionally to show us how much of a difference it makes. Gotta learn the hard way I suppose, wish It didn’t mean I’d have a burn hole in my back of pant legs though.

      @@JoshMate-lz4hyIt’s possible to weld galvanized without prep. It’s not easy to learn. Short stickout, higher than average voltage. And a GOOD respirator. Do it in a production shop a lot. Overhead too.

Awesome solution to videos saying galvanized can't be welded! I have some emt pipe left from electrical and I'd rather recycle if I can (unrelated to that) and not have to go to the store searching for metal!

    Weld quality is certainly improved when removing the zinc, but the most important reason for removing the zinc is because of the serious health risks. Since the zinc is still on the inside of the pipe where you can’t reach with the grinder I would use acid to remove the zinc instead.

    I feel like the way you learn to be safe while welding, is by learning what happens when you’re being stupid.
    What made me learn to wear long sleeves was stick. Had short sleeves, got a ton of spatter covering my arm, and got a nice little uneven sunburn. Hurt for a couple days. And now I don’t do that.
    Similarly, my friend learned to keep a guard on his grinder after saying “it doesn’t even do anything” and proceeded to grind down one of his fingers almost cutting off the tendon. You could see it but he didn’t cut it.
    He used the guard now.

    • @majorrgeek
      @majorrgeek 3 роки тому +3

      read the title GMAW stands for gas metal arc welding which needs to clean off all the zinc at the join before you weld and weld indoors but if outdoors flux core is preferable although I would use .9mm flux core anyways - gas is too expensive and flux burns away more impurities as well as any zinc - I would even use 6011 s or 6013s stick weld as the metal is quite thick looks like about 4mm in the pipe and 10mm plate steel

      From my little experience ( i am surely not a real fabricator ) when I ground off the zinc with an angle grinder, the metal starts to spark when the zinc is ground off and reveals the clean steel underneath it. Can someone confirm if my theory is correct?
