As someone who's listened and watched a lot of true crime, this game was truly horrifying. "You want to listen to peoples horror stories in real life?" - sure! "Do you want to play a game as one of those victims?" - ....
CJU's empathy never ceases to amaze me. He's seen so many horrible things in horror games and yet he still expresses concern for the characters and hopes for the best. He really seems like the sort of guy I would love to have in my TTRPG group or invite over for board game night.
I totally agree with your take. My favorite is the way he handles ghosts and monsters, "Oh, hello. You wouldn't happen to have a flashlight, would you?" At least that's how he handles the ones he's not running away from while swearing a blue streak. :D
Monsters are often just humans seen in a different way. This certainly joins the very small club of psychological horror games which treat their subjects with care though, good job dev
Weird and compelling. I went from not trusting the “father” to wondering whether he was protecting her from the police for some reason. And was he really her father? And was there something weird about her so he had to hide her away? No mirrors, were there?
Nah, the "father" was a pedo who kept the girl locked up and sedated so he could have his way with her while she was asleep. When he was gone for a few days, ot was because the coos had taken him in for interviews as he was most likely a suspect in the girl's abduction.
Because the last scene was so grainy, what was it supposed to be? I understood the story. There was a story of a man that trapped his daughter in an apartment basement and horrible things were done, she had children down there and was finally able to convince her dad to take one of the kids to the hospital. Super crazy story. I just don't understand the last part.
Thanks for asking because I was doing the same. I went back and watched it on my laptop instead of my television and yeah, it does look like a pack of condoms and a single condom sitting just to the side of it. Out of context though, I would have never known what it was.
I actually wrote an essay in high school about a post apocalyptic world from the views of a child born during the time, they didn't know what certain fruits were, what cds/phones were, or much of what we have today. I ended up getting an award for it and its what I used as my college entrance essay(since i was an english major), this game reminded me of that. But also as someone who suffered childhood abuse it did remind me very much of that, very very depressing at times especially the blindly believing everything the parent says even when it sounds 'not right' it had about the outcome i expected.
I kind of pondered that too, but came to realise that ultimately it doesn't really make much of a difference. "Papa" is a horrible piece of scum whether he's her actual father or not.
@@Gruntbucket I'd rather it be a stranger than a person's own dad doing it. Doesn't make it much better, but at least it isn't a family member doing such a horrible thing.
I've seen a lot of games that cover dark, real world events. The one that comes to mind is that anthology game Chris played where you play as a school shooter. I remember he didn't show that part of the game because he felt it was disrespectful to the victims of actual shootings. I agreed with him. However, even though this game covers a subject that is, at the very least, just as dark as school shootings, I feel like the game and the developers covered it with respect. They showed, and didn't show, just enough to get the story across. I appreciate that. Showing too much would have been disrespectful to real incest and abuse victims, especially considering that this game's scenario has happened in real life with real people and real victims. Chris also handled story this with so much respect. The way he handles dark topics is one of the reasons why he's my favorite let's player and is pretty much the only one I watch anymore. He has tact. Even though he make jokes, he knows when to not make jokes and the jokes he does make aren't offensive. I'm trying to psych myself up to post some videos of myself playing games (not horror cause I can't play horror games, only watch them) and Chris is an inspiration for me.
Wow....this game was so dark and deep without actually saying what was happening. I was totally quiet this entire game because I was constantly trying to prepare myself for what ever was going to happen next. It's so sad that this is the reality for so many children, thank you so much for playing this.
Summary: For those who don't know, CJU got the good ending. But for the bad ending however, it is revealed that "papa" have her sedatives so that she would fall asleep heavily and r-word her every night. The cycle also continues until day 143 when the last dialogue is: "papa, why is my belly round and big?"
Saying this honestly, a lot of comments I've seen have disappointmented me and filled me with rage to a large extent. While I've never experienced the type of things in this video, I've experienced child hood trauma, been hurt a gardian figure. I'm sorry a lot of you don't find the story "interesting" enough, but all the suggestions I've see were just disrespectful and a perversion of the subject matter. You were told it handled real life matters that actually happened you wanted an apocalyptic world where the dad wasn't the villain, or the little girl turning into a monster at the end. I'm so sorry that a real life tragedy that happens every day that some victims never escape from bores you. It's heartbreaking how many people can't respect such a real and serious subject because it's too "boring"
It is a game. It's not real. I have childhood trauma too and you're not doing yourself any favors by relating a video game and the reaction to it to yourself. Most people can detach emotionally from it enough to write their comments that make you so angry. It would really do you good if you could do the same. Being angry at others because they don't react the way you want them to is not very healthy. Trying to make them feel guilty is even more unhealthy, because that's not your business either. Please take good care of yourself.
I like how the dev approached this very dark and sinister topic. It was really hard to watch, yet, I was still hoping like Chris for a good ending. But for sure it was some sad gameplay...
The dark, dark bit where you choose not to take your pills, and he comes back. Meaning you were not sedated that time. You had to experience it, conscious. "Is it worth it?" indeed. I bet she was asking herself that as it was happening.
@@alexandrialeonora6542They’re referring to the night before. The 6th day when “papa” didn’t come home and the girl chose not to take the pills. She went to bed but she wasn’t as sedated. He had to have come home that night because there is food on the table the next morning. So, she must’ve experienced what had happened to her the night prior. Her dream reflects that in dialogue and the next morning - she still chooses to not take the pills because she no longer trusts “papa”. Even after he comes home, she chooses to pretend to sleep rather than actually taking her pills.
Wow... This was a true "horror" game. The game was very well executed in my opinion. The subject matter is not something I want to think about as a parent, but a well done game.
If you don’t know a local one and you’re in the US, donating to NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) is always a great cause. They do help with foreign cases around the world when theyre needed too.
So tragic what happened to that girl. I mean just imagine, being deprived of everything a normal human possesses except for food and water and a simple tablet, and then having *that* happen to you at night. Just awful.
@zhongli lover Yeah, I believe he might be referring to case of Joseph Fritz. That "person" was a gross, wretched piece of sh*t who did this exact thing (but to an even worse extent) to his own daughter, for years. I believe true stories like that deserve to be heard, so that people are aware real abominations like him do exist, and more importantly, so the ones who suffer can be heard- if they are ready to and want to open up about it. Be aware though, the full story is very heavy, so if you go seeking it out, just be ready for some of the lowest depths of depravity a human being is capable of. Just a warning.
I think the worst part of it all is just how gently he talks to her, and the fact that it seems to be, by all means, genuine? He brings her an apple. He doesn't really have any reason to do that outside of genuinely caring about her. Which just makes his actions even more twisted. Somehow, to him, this is some kind of twisted form of love.
“The substantial evidence just escaped” LOLOLOL it made me laugh so hard. I am so shocked by the ending. So twisted !!! Poor girl. Her dreams are all her traumatic experiences with that sickening “papa” !!!😡😡

Thank you for playing. That was indeed very dark topic in the plot. Sometimes the real horror is just next door, among us. And Cju kinda guessed at the very beginning with the suggestive allusion to Fritzl (3:33) P.s. - kinda pity you did not checked what happens if you continued to take the pills
my first thought, and i will edit this after ( i'm at 14:36) is that the girl is actually the one going outside and collecting the food, and the father/father voice is just in her head? kind of like DID, a protector taking care of the one that needs it. edit: oh boy was i so wrong-
This game was something else. I knew from the start that 'papa' was a bad guy, but only when he was walking down the corridor at the end did I think, ohhh shit 😔 was a very tough watch, but kudos to the dev.
“WARNING THIS INVOLVES A TRUE STORY THAT THIS GAME IS BASED ON!!!!” This is game is based of a true story like it said. A man by the name of Josef Fritzl was refitting a door for his cellar and asked his 18 year old daughter Elizabeth Fritzl for help. He then knocked her unconscious and locked her in this cell. For the next 24 years that would be the only thing she would see. Josef lied to his wife saying she ran away and joined a cult. During Elizabeth’s time in the cellar. She was assaulted and sexually abused. A result for this she had given birth 7 times with one child sadly dying. Josef’s response to this was telling his wife that she had left the kids on there doorstep saying she couldn’t care for them. on April 26, 2008, aged 42. She was able to escape from the basement after one of her children fell unconscious and Josef agreed to get her medical care. She had told staff which and told the police and resulting in Josef’s arrest. Elisabeth was given a new name following the trial, with strict laws to prevent her identity being revealed. She now lives with her six surviving children in a tiny hamlet in the Austrian countryside, which also cannot be identified and only referred to by the country's media as 'Village X' The children, aged between 20 and 34 as of February 2023, reportedly slept in rooms with doors permanently open after undergoing weekly therapy sessions to eliminate the traumas they suffered inside the cellar.
A very dark game but sadly and scarily it has happened, human beings are the worst of monsters! The game was well done but man, it gives me such a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach...
I'm surprised how quickly you caught on, mentioning Josef Fritzl almost immediately. Christ this game is depressing. It doesn't scare me, but rather it gives me a really profound feeling of sadness, considering all of this really did happen to a real girl in some capacity. Some symbolism I got out of the 2nd dream sequence: the "apple" that looks like a white raspberry could represent the victim, pure and innocent as it is depicted as white. The surrounding darkness combined with the very phallic shaped monster that represents her depraved father adds to her despair, completely lost and hopeless as she's raped by the man who should be protecting her every single day. Even now, I'm just realizing that the reason why she washes herself each day wasn't because she's dirty or anything, but because she's "dirty" down below after each night papa comes down.
Well that was horrible, wasn't expecting to feel sick at end of a CJU video, unfortunately real life monsters are worse than any horror game's and they hide amongst us
This story is truly more horrifying than any fictional monster or horror story. Despite being desensitized to horror violence this makes me feel sick. The real stuff makes me super disturbed and ill.
I can't even imagine that you brought up joseph fritzel and it turned out to be kind of like that. She was trapped in that monster's basement and...oh god. I'm feeling pukey.
If anyone is wondering the specifics of the "Based on true events" disclaimer, this is possibly based on the Fritzl case, in where an Austrian man named Josef Fritzl imprisoned his daughter for 24 years since she was 18 years old.
*SPOILER WARNING* Honestly I wasn't expecting this to be about abuse. I thought it was a tactic to make us THINK that's where it was going but then boom, world has ended and we're part of the last survivors. Kinda wish it went that direction instead.
I was thinking either your theory or that she was some kind of subject to a group of scientists testing on her. I thought they just told her the monster Bs to keep her in testing, and that papa was just a scientist
Oh boy. Yeah, that was heavy alright. Bravo for playing it through, Chris. Man I had a lot of questions, none of which I wanted answered. As always, you make my day... but this time I'm going to find one of your other playthroughs to sort of wash my mind. Imagine that - a game so horror-filled that one needs another CJU horror playthrough to recover!
Not gonna lie this automatically gave me vibes from that CSI episode where the boy was kept in a "bunker" & was being auctioned online... then the story went there. This was such a dark story. But the most terrifying thing is this isnt some nightmare or some childhood monster in the closet. This is a reality😢
Im sorry but there was a warning at the beginning of the video. Y'all could have just skipped this one video but chose to watch it. Its a very very heartbreaking story.
This is one of the darkest games/stories I’ve seen, and I feel like it being a game i.e. interactive pulls you in even deeper. When he said “Let’s get to it then” I had to pause the video for a few moments even though I knew by then what was going on. And this is based on a true story? Holy god…
To anyone who questions it, this might sadly be an inspiration on a real story. The Elizabeth Fritzl case. I’m warning, the real case is more disturbing (same theme but just, more) so search about it but don’t if you are delicate with the information
CJU, appreciate you even more after this one. You could have played and not posted but instead you shared the experience in a very tasteful way. Headed off to rewatch RE4 to get rid of the darkness from this one.
They say with children is easier, the healing process... I like how they chose to end it, imagining she gets the help she needs. I've seen a lot on this and similar subjects so, maybe next time something easier or at least something with mature person's sufferings...
@@tazymomo9394 Enlighten me pls, suffering itself doesn't make you mature tho. it's what comes after if this is what you mean. Being young makes difference, maybe I didn't put that right.
@@SD-dg9lj it makes it different but that healing process isn't easy or easier, and no the only difference is that abuse and dependents is that childs whole world and all they know. No it doesn't make them mature but stating "I've seen a lot in this so maybe next time have a mature victim" or whatever bullshit you said is literally belittling the point. The point is those kids REAL kids don't even know what's happening to them. It's not about being interesting or new it's real fucking topic that needs to be treated with respect. I didn't go through something as bad as in the game and I was told as someone going through so much abuse and the hands of a parent figure that "I knew it was wrong" and "I should of told someone" saying when I dealt with from the age of 6 to the age 11 and being neglected emotionally and mentally for as long as I could remember. I'm 21 suffering from depression, severe anxiety to the point I can't hardly walk outside, fear of anyone touching me, and zero trust for authority figure or family in my life. All of that, even after therapy, and medicine. It's not easy, and it never will be, especially knowing I will never trust anyone fully ever in my life because I don't know what to. That is what children like me, and like that live with.
@@tazymomo9394 My intent was never this, I apologize anyways, since we can't understand each other fully. But it would have been nice if you considered who youre talking to, and if that person has been through the similar...This easier (not easy) was said by people who worked on such cases, I wrote it in positive manner, but it doesnt matter, no two lives are the same and so can't be compared, and everything depends on individual thought, mindset, perspective etc (all which can be changed). I will say no more...
@@SD-dg9lj As a childhood trauma survivor, I agree that childhood abuse sets people up for a lot of challenges. Clearly we should be able to agree that its very individual how each person copes. I can understand that its generally accepted that children are resilient and may be able to fare batter in the long run (after trauma). Unfortunately it depends on the type of abuse, duration, age, as well as whether or not the child ever got closure or instead blamed. Im sure other factors come into play..
The game reminded me about the book "Room" by Emma Donoghue. But at least the book's character wasn't an ignorant child left alone with a monster in human skin. I think the atmosphere was done well, a little too well in fact. I didn't really see anything and I feel deeply disturbed and uncomfortable.
Probably the most heartbreaking thing is the amount of comments to videos like this one of people saying they've experienced it themselves. My heart bleeds seeing more and more of them...
@@FranP93 The world we live in is a sick place. Here in the US, 1 in 10 children experience sexual abuse and assault every year (Department of Health and Human Services, 2022; Downing, 2021). It doesn’t always happen the way it did in the game, but sexual abuse and assault is disgusting no matter what the circumstances. And when a game treats the subject with respect and gets you thinking like this one does, it’s easy to see why the comment section would feel like a safe space to commiserate.
The Story is Honestly Disturbing and Disgusting. And I'm more Disturb this also happens in real life.. And People should be more aware of this Serious matter.. (Analysis/Spoilers) The girl sees her Sexual Assaulter/Kidnapper as a "father", Fathers have 3 primary roles for a child The Protected, The Provider, And The disciplinarian the game shows the "father" providing her basic needs like food and water also "Protecting" her from the "Monsters". On the other hand Rocking-Horse represent a singular activity that one is given to endless distraction from the actual meaningful pursuits in short The girl is focused more on getting distracted(Watering plants or playing game runner) than the actual danger beside her, And also the girl doesn't have any idea of what a sun is referring to it as a "Glowing ball" or what an "apple" is meaning she is uneducated or the sedative drugs affect her to the point she got amnesia(One of the side effects on taking in everyday) The other ending(I only heard since im to disturb to get it) when she got pregnant, Girls get their menstrual up to 8 to 13 years old im guessing she's either 8 or 9 when she got taken away. She developed Stockholm syndrome and the blurred condom was probably her way of coping as people often detach them self to cope with severe trauma precisely she made the condom into a black square to block it out. The sedative drugs she takes affect so much as she gets slower in speed and having amnesia from the outside world, Sedatives also cause nightmares. Her captur also tries to manipulate her into believing a "post apocalyptic wolrd" and too staying quiet like "Monsters are mimicking human noise" for her to get harder to be save, Which also means the kidnapper was also purposely letting her starve. And also the "Wash yourself" and "You are already cleaned" was actually referring to..
Honestly I had to get off the interenet for a while cuz this game was unbearably sickening. Just having a something show you how those kinds of scenarios could make you feel and traumatized, gives the players so much empathy and a glimpse to what these victims must go through q-q. God and I hate how similar the circumstances of the girl are in it's bad ending to the Elizabeth Fritzl case. The moment the character asked why her belly was getting round and big was too f*cked up (By the way I really loved your analysis on the game and it would make a really good video essay to tell players how much thought was really put into writing and developing in this game)
This game makes me feel so sick, I don’t think I’ve ever felt like crying over a game before. I think it being based on an IRL case just makes it worse. 😕
Ending one where you continue taking the "antidote" is all the more disturbing. "Why do i feel nauseous every morning , papa?" or somethign to that effect. It's worded differently in the roblox remake to not get taken down. the story is that the girl has been taking sedatives and the 'papa' has been coming down every night and SA'ing her.
this is horror, the horror which is real and can happen. Games like these include stuff like this and binding of issac, a game where a boy is lead to believed he’s a devilish monster and fights his own demons and terrors in a locked little box with his imagination only to die of suffocation, this game goes on about a young girl locked in a basement with her father who makes her take pills that make her fall asleep so her father could do “things” to her. This kind of stuff can happen, and in this world it’s not very surprising
Unfortunately, I know from direct experience (and the experience of my mother and a friend), what kinds of monsters pose as our loving family members. People who, on the outside, seem to be the friendliest and funniest. But what they choose to do to their vulnerable family members, the ones who depend on them, behind closed doors........😞 The hardest part about watching this game is knowing that (aside from the "being trapped in a bunker bit"), there are many, many monsters out there like this, in real life. And a lot of us know them.
I think this was based on a real crime about Elizabeth fritzl? And watching the documentary was horrifying. To summarize it it's about a girl being trapped at her OWN father's basement for 24 years and her own father forcing himself to Elizabeth and Elizabeth had 7 children because of her own father. It's Just absolutely terrible. That's all I remember from the documentary. And the game genuinely made the rooms quite exactly like the place where Elizabeth was in.
I found this game to be quite disheartening and unsettling. Initially, I expected the game's setting to be similar to that of Dead Rising, with its zombie-infested world. In my imagination, the protagonist would be infected and rely on daily doses of specific medicine to prevent turning into a zombie. This would explain why her dad or other family members (whom I thought would be present) had to keep their distance to avoid getting infected themselves. It's disappointing that the actual story turned out to be so disturbing. On a positive note, I have always enjoyed watching CJU plays horror games, and I appreciate the effort you put into them.
Edit - I finished it. Thanks I hate it. I guess we knew exactly what was going on. Ugh. This is literally making me cry and I have no idea what's going on... This is breaking my heart 😢
For the one that doesnt know what is happening here is my theory So we are playing as a kid that is in her "papa safety" And after a few days things got suspicious for the girl and try's to fake sleeping and if ur smart enough for the ending the papa wasnt keeping u save at all but using you instead
This will probably get buried but on the off chance someone does see it, and is curious about the 2nd ending where you keep taking the pills, I just finished it. Spoilers and also massive trigger warning:

As someone who's listened and watched a lot of true crime, this game was truly horrifying.
"You want to listen to peoples horror stories in real life?"
- sure!
"Do you want to play a game as one of those victims?"
- ....
Yeah I couldn't tell what was in the nightstand either. I'm scouring the comments right now to see if anyone answered.
It seemed like a pack of condoms to me.
Thanks for asking because I was doing the same. I went back and watched it on my laptop instead of my television and yeah, it does look like a pack of condoms and a single condom sitting just to the side of it. Out of context though, I would have never known what it was.
I suspected it to be that but couldn't recognize it in the scene, too. Thanks!
Awesome game!
Oh ffs now I wish I didn’t have come too the comments cause I didn’t know what was in the nightstand
Ugh, the "monsters imitating human voices"... so don't ever call for help. :-(
I actually wrote an essay in high school about a post apocalyptic world from the views of a child born during the time, they didn't know what certain fruits were, what cds/phones were, or much of what we have today.
We'll you're definitely okay now! Keep living life to the fullest.
I am on a very abusive situation right now but its fine after all who cares?
My question is if she’s been in that basement all her life then is he actually her father at all or was she abducted
I was wondering the same thing.
I kind of pondered that too, but came to realise that ultimately it doesn't really make much of a difference. "Papa" is a horrible piece of scum whether he's her actual father or not.
Not sure it matters since he was being a monster either way.

Can you repeat that backwards in Polish?
Wow....this game was so dark and deep without actually saying what was happening. I was totally quiet this entire game because I was constantly trying to prepare myself for what ever was going to happen next. It's so sad that this is the reality for so many children, thank you so much for playing this.
Summary: For those who don't know, CJU got the good ending. But for the bad ending however, it is revealed that "papa" have her sedatives so that she would fall asleep heavily and r-word her every night. The cycle also continues until day 143 when the last dialogue is:
"papa, why is my belly round and big?"
Guess the world has just become tired and jaded from seeing the same horrible things happen over and over again. Nothing you can really do about it.
No, he was disturbed by the doorbell before it could happen...

@@zhonglilover8794 Yep. A terribly horrific true story.
I think the worst part of it all is just how gently he talks to her, and the fact that it seems to be, by all means, genuine? He brings her an apple. He doesn't really have any reason to do that outside of genuinely caring about her. Which just makes his actions even more twisted. Somehow, to him, this is some kind of twisted form of love.

my first thought, and i will edit this after ( i'm at 14:36) is that the girl is actually the one going outside and collecting the food, and the father/father voice is just in her head? kind of like DID, a protector taking care of the one that needs it.

Too dark for my taste. Now that I know the ending, I kind of want to rewatch the dream sequences.
“WARNING THIS INVOLVES A TRUE STORY THAT THIS GAME IS BASED ON!!!!”
This is game is based of a true story like it said.
Wow, this was dark. Truly captured the naive trust children place in adults. Very sad but good game!
Well that was horrible, wasn't expecting to feel sick at end of a CJU video, unfortunately real life monsters are worse than any horror game's and they hide amongst us
The developer better make a sequel where there is a police investigation and fatal shooting with the father involved
I agree
I sure was hoping there wasn't going to be a zipper sound and the world was actually messed up. Reminded me of that story of the Swiss guy.
This story is truly more horrifying than any fictional monster or horror story. Despite being desensitized to horror violence this makes me feel sick. The real stuff makes me super disturbed and ill.
Wow... that was really disturbing. I couldn't help but think of those women in Ohio that were kidnapped from years.
I can't even imagine that you brought up joseph fritzel and it turned out to be kind of like that. She was trapped in that monster's basement and...oh god. I'm feeling pukey.
oh boy 38:00 ish and I am feeling sick... this game is heavy on my mind... really good game though but very dark and tragic
If anyone is wondering the specifics of the "Based on true events" disclaimer, this is possibly based on the Fritzl case, in where an Austrian man named Josef Fritzl imprisoned his daughter for 24 years since she was 18 years old.
I remember reading about that in 2009.
This game immediately reminded me of the Josef Fritzl case in Austria.

So we are playing as a kid that is in her "papa safety" And after a few days things got suspicious for the girl and try's to fake sleeping and if ur smart enough for the ending the papa wasnt keeping u save at all but using you instead
Little jumpscares, little spooky music,
Still one of the most horrifying games ive seen to date.
