CAN YOU LIVE ON YOUR STATE PENSION IN THAILAND. AND OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE MAKING THE MOVE?

  • A question that I am often asked on this channel is, can you survive and live a good life in Thailand on your state pension and is it easy to transition from living in a Western country to living in an Asian country like Thailand? Different people have different ideas of how they want to live their lives and most can adapt to living here but unfortunately, not everyone finds happiness by moving to a new country to live. I wrote a book a few years ago,” The Retire in Thailand Handbook…The First Six Months” I spoke to many ex-pats who had decided to move to Thailand. The most compelling reasons were the cost of living, wanting to have a relationship with a Thai lady (or ladyboy), and the climate. On the downside, some of them had problems settling here such as missing friends and family and the culture shock of living in a Southeast Asian country.

Small room, Moped, Pot Noodle ... is no way to live and it's certainly no way to retire. What is the point of going to Thailand to live like that?
Too many people winging it and sad to say many will be heading home broke, disappointed and in a far worse financial situation than when they left.

Strange. Are you telling people who can not put 800,000 baht in the bank, they can live in Thailand ?

@@timwalker2458No that is not what I said at all. I have seen many people who have put the required 800,000 baht in the bank as one of the Thai immigration requirements for a retirement visa then struggle to live on their basic fortnightly pension. If you don't have the 800,000 baht in the bank at least three months before you apply for your next visa then you won't get the A-O retirement visa.

@@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 If you change to an O visa based on retirement inside Thailand, visa agent might help you with that financial requirement. Also, health insurance is not mandatory with an O visa. Many retirees choose to self insure, especially when they get old, and can`t get health insurance anymore (or when it becomes extremely expensive).

Quite a negative video for a jolly chap. Why do you assume it's only more expensive in Thailand than it used to be. The cost of living in the UK has gone through the roof. But my pensions have also increased. I'm getting more for my money now in Thailand than I used to. I'm retiring out to Thailand this year, done my research since before covid, I've got expat friends so I'm definitely making the move. Don't be so negative.

@@N17247 Wow what a comment. it's not negative to tell people the realities of making a move to another country. There are good and bad things about living in any country and unlike living in the UK, in Thailand there are many more positives than negatives about living here. Also I don't assume Thailand is more expensive than it used to be. The cost of living is more here after covid than it was prior to covid, though prices are kept lower by the Thai government due to the lower wages of Thai people and lack of social security to help people who are having difficulties. If you took the time to look at the other 400 videos I have made about living here then you will see that I love living in Thailand and I have always encouraged people to do so. The point I was making was if you only have a pension and no other income from Investments and hardly any savings, then life here would not be easy for that person and more so for someone retiring to Thailand from the UK as the UK pension is frozen when you move to Thailand. The UK pension is about £11,000 a year which equates to 9,000 baht a week and if you only have 9,000 baht to live with no other income from investments then you would not have a very good life, (which was the point I was making). Fortunately most expats have other income from investments or savings and have a fantastic life here due to the lower cost of living. Good luck with your move to Thailand
      Cheers

@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 just making the point that the cost of living has increased all over the world, but more so in the UK more than Thailand. Your video came to me as I obviously watch Thailand videos, I did find your video interesting so I will check out your other videos. The UK state pension will be £11,960 in April, I'm lucky to have also a private pension of £17,000. But I have a friend, an expat, who lives in Thailand on a pension of £11,000. He enjoys his life and is very happy living in paradise, he says he wouldn't be happy living in the UK. You said living in Thailand on 9000 baht you wouldn't have a very good life, I totally disagree. What kind of life do you think you'd have in tha UK? I do agree prices have gone up in Thailand but all that is relative. Just my point, but my money will go further in Thailand. I hear so much from some expats that things aren't the same and it's gone too expensive in Thailand. Maybe it's just their experience.
