And it makes me wonder why he wasn't on Angel Island. I work at a movie theater and literally the best thing I’ve seen come out of this movie is that this one time a father and his daughter came out of the movie day 1 absolutely ecstatic. Apparently the father grew up with sonic and he and his daughter would bond over the games together when they had the chance. That absolutely made my day.
The movie itself may be sort of meh, but just seeing people get such enjoyment out of it is great, at least to me.
*that's pretty wholesome*

That's just like my dad and me. First video game I played was Sonic 2. My dad bought a Genesis to destress from work and he put it in my room since my tv had the plugins. I was like 3 or 4 maybe. I'm not going to say Sonic flossing or make pop culture references is "good," but it makes sense for the character. Not the character of Sonic, but the character of a young teen who literally only knows the world through social media. "People do this a lot, so it must be cool!" It shows his naivete, and makes even more sense when he says "I have no idea!"
All of your other points make a lot of sense though.

_"Any other Sonic would be exploring and venturing, but this one stays in one town and spies on everyone."_
To be fair, the last time he went exploring, that resulted in the echidna tribe finding where he and Longclaw live, with the former getting sent to another world and the latter being most likely killed. Sonic was probably worried about some other tribe or whatever attacking him, which eventually sort of happened anyway with Robotnik's robots.

He makes pop culture references because this version has literally lived on Earth for years. So of course he would be exposed to it. How else would he know how to play baseball or what Flash comics were?
Also Roger Craig Smith while was not the orginal nor the only former voice actor of Sonic to get passed over. Its not new.
Unpopular opinion: I was hoping for Jaleel White.
Oddly, Sonic's voice is the only one that seems to change a lot over time. Most voice actors for the series are the same, imitating the original voice or have made very small changes. Sonic's voice, while always having the same tone, changes with every voice actor.
I’ve heard this quote and I feel like it makes sense. “Sonic would floss, he’s a jokey, immature child. It’d be weirder if he didn’t mimic modern kids”
Sonic has been since the 90s.

This is a movie catered specifically to people who go "HE'S JUST A BABY BOY I'D DIE FOR HIM". Same as Detective Pikachu.- it's primary strength is "cute".
Doesn't make for a particularly interesting or unique film, but considering the genre is "talking animal mascot for kids", I think it serves it's purpose.
Anyways, Sonic is a baby boy and I'd die for him.

I am ok with the baby design at least it's not the hedgehog baby from sonic underground you know the one!
Roger Craig Smith as Sonic sounds like a 25-year-old trying really really hard to act like a hip and cool youngster.
He's fitting as Boom Sonic, but I don't think he's all that great otherwise, especially compared to the energetic and higher-sounding voices he previously had. I think Ben Schwartz is a nice change of pace, as I can't really imagine Roger's deeper and older-sounding voice being fitting for how much the film likes to portray Sonic as an immature teenager.
Roger is better at older sonic while Ben is better at younger energetic Adventure era Sonic..
Ben Schwartz basically just uses his Dewey Duck voice (complete with borrowing the catchphrase) and it honestly works.

Can you blame him
Just a couple things:
Chili Dogs aren’t just mentioned, he’s seen eating them in the slow mo Bar sequence.
Many people actually PREFER Ben Schwartz to Rodger as Sonic’s VA. Ben himself isn’t even a huge name. In fact, Ben was originally only voicing for a 4-minute sound test to try to sell it to studios, not even intending for him to be the voice. But they ended up liking him so much that they kept him. I’m not sure if Rodger has the range to display all the emotions needed for the Sonic they portrayed in the film. I’m not saying Rodger isn’t capable. It’s just that most of his Sonic voices sound the same, even through many different emotions. He’s fine, but I feel can’t portray the depth needed for this particular version of Sonic.
“There’s no reason Sonic is mad at Tom for wanting to leave Green Hills.”
Sonic is confused, because Sonic never really had any personal connections to anyone until that point. Even so, he learned to appreciate the small things, and people in Green Hills. To Sonic, Green Hills is perfect. So the prospect of leaving a perfectly good town with great people makes no sense to him. Plus, the town LOVES Tom. You have to pay attention to the line where Sonic says “Yes, they can call anyone to help. But they don’t, they call You.” Referring to everyone always wanting Tom’s help because they personally like him as a person. Sonic dreams to be wanted and appreciated by others, something Tom already has. THAT’S the reason he was confused. He saw something, that Tom didn’t.
Ok, zoomer.
@@spacedog2535 you have become the very thing the internet hates
Sonic gets angry over Tom wanting to leave Green Hills because Sonic is forced to leave the place that he loves, yet Tom just wants to leave because he has the option to. To quote Sonic from the movie, "I was forced from my home, your home is perfect and you're leaving it! Why would you do that?"
i honestly hate roger's sonic voice
@@spacedog2535 wow so original
My favorite line of the whole movie is that he says Keanu Reeves is a National Treasure because that is that is so damn true
I’ll be honest, I feel that this version of Sonic is probably more Sonic than the Sonic we have in the games. Sonic even in the comics can act immature and a little snarky. So honestly the idea of him dropping a pop culture reference like he does a lot in the movie doesn’t deviate too far from his character
thats his character trait tho he supposed to be cocky
The movie length set up punchline/ad of “Olive Garden gift card” is honestly one of the funniest things I’ve seen in years. They clearly planned the hell outta that sponsor, and it honestly worked sense after the movie me and my group I saw it with went to Olive Garden (for the meme) and the joke is intently why, I hope that more paid movie sponsors are gags in the future rather than backround products (or the Zillow ad) because when it flows naturally in the movie it works better than any “the character drinks coke drink coke too”

I agree with a lot of stuff, but I can't help but feel like Scott didn't pay attention to some parts of the movie or what it's supposed to be
As a guy who never liked Sonic the Hedgehog because of his character, I genuinely enjoyed the film. I went to see it because I love Jim Carrey and I wanted to support Paramount for deciding to listen to the fans. But I was pleasantly surprised that they were able to make me genuinely care about the spiky blue fuzz ball. Great film, may see it a second time. Great review! I just have one criticism- at first I thought the same way you did, why does Sonic need the cop to take him to San Francisco when he can just run there? I understand if the answer wasn't obvious to everyone, but to me it was obvious that, yes, Sonic didn't actually need to be taken there by the cop guy (duh he can just run there), he just wanted his time on Earth to last as long as possible because he was lonely and wanted to spend as much time as possible with his new friend that he's never had a connection with before. It's not said outright in the movie, but reading between the lines I thought that was the obvious answer! Basically hedgehog is lonely and wants a real connection for at least a day lol
I never really thought of it but now that I do, this whole NAME YOU KNOW thing is the entire reason they hired a popular UA-camr to voice Sonic here in Germany. I feel like i should have noticed that a little sooner.

So, I’m just going to throw this out there. Wouldn’t it make sense for THIS Sonic to reference pop culture? It’s clear that he has hardly any interaction with the internet or the outside world, outside of just observing the locals and TV. To me, Sonic copies and references things that he has seen and heard other people talk about in Green Hills. He seems to also enjoy watching the baseball games that children love playing, so it’s more than possible that some kid would have flossed then.

oof size large.
Normally I like your reviews, and I usually hate to use the "you didn't get it" defense for a movie because it's a lame ass defense, but man you did NOT understand this Sonic at all to be making the complaints you're making about him. Your claims that the writers don't know who Sonic is really baffles me. Sonic's always been a smartass comedic character ever since he was given a voice back in the 90's cartoons, and it's been his basic character trait in every version of him since. In the movie he's a teenager who was forced away from his home and had to live without any direct interaction with another being all his life, so he literally lived his life engulfing in the pop culture of Midwest America to accomidate his lack of real friends. Put all of that together and his characterization in the movie, including him flossing, is EXACTLY how Sonic would and should act. Everything he does is in line with being a teenage speedster who longs for a friend and absorbed pop culture as a substitute for it. How is he "inconsistent" with this portrayal? What makes you think he'd know what a bucket list is? It's not a common thing to discuss, and it's the same with Chili Dogs. He might have seen one, but it's not like he can ask around about what one is. And of course he's not going to go adventuring and exploring. Being haphazard with who sees him is exactly why he had to leave his original home and be on Earth in the first place, so it makes sense he'd stick to a place where he knows he's able to stay under the radar.
I agree that Tyson played a huge role in helping with the character design...but that's it. He was only there for character design. I highly doubt it was him that had them add in all the musical cues, that after credits scene, the echidnas in the beginning, and others. The one reference I might give him credit for is the Emblem on Sonic's headband when he's playing with the nunchucks, and maybe the Hill Top Road sign. With everything else, it's entirely plausible that the writers and effects artists already had that stuff in there.
On a more personal/subjective note, I love Ben Schwartz as Sonic. I don't mind Roger Craig, but his voice just would NOT have worked for how they were trying to portray this version of Sonic. He sounds too old and he really can't seem to emote well enough for everything that Sonic deals with in the movie.
And one more side note: You don't seem to understand Detective Pikachu either, because that movie's entire story revolves around the fact that it happens with and around Pokemon, so the "buddy road trip" thing is more of a side effect of the source material it was adapting.
This is really well written and correct ngl

There's a generic part to every generation of people: those that follow and want most to be accepted by others. But, while this is generally true to all humans, the exception is in the degree to which people follow through with it.
A notable example is drug and alcohol consumption. There are professional studies and casual online questionnaires that point to so many current day addicts having started out because they wanted to be "cool" or be part of the group.
But of course, this is just human nature. It helps us coexist and allows us to improve ourselves and our world through cooperation in these groups. We just need to learn to judge things ourselves more often instead of just following everyone all the time.

Roger is great but I don't think he would fit as this sonic. Rogers sonic voice makes sonic feel more mature and older. His movie redesign, he looks and feels like he should have a kid nature which his does and bens voice really nails that for me.
No, I'm sure it would still fit.
@@rodrigomorales563 no it would not, it really wouldnt.
@@rodrigomorales563 Yeah, I loved Ben Swarchtz in Space Force and Parks and Rec, but he does not fit as Sonic.
I agree. Roger's characters are usually a bit older anyways, so his voice fits well, but this sonic seems a bit younger, and Ben schwartz was actually a pretty good fit for this one. Also, no, I didn't get the popular actor voices popular thing vibes from it because I had no idea who the hell Ben Schwartz was. I mean, they were guilty of that with Robotnik but it actually fits so I won't complain.
Well, sonic is still technically a kid. While roger's voice does sound a bit older, I do feel like it would still fit the young hedgehog. I believe that sonic should have that kid nature overall (and he technically does even in the games). So roger's voice could work for ben's sonic, and vice versa. At least, that's how I feel.
You've pointed out alot of things I've never really thought of before. Great video!
6:26 well done i woke up everyone at 3am cus i couldnt stop laughing
Honestly really glad about the great reception this movie's been getting, the fact that they actually listened to the feedback and sacrificed time to fix any mistakes is just amazing to me. Can't wait to watch it some day soon!
When you said he flosses at the beginning my imediant thought was "Man, what do you got against denial hygiene" because I am an uncultured swine.
The Crackhead Sonic Adventure frame, of him saying "Aw, yeah! This is happening!"
Was the best part of the video.
i love the new pastel art style, with the thinner lines.
0:45-0:47 How dare they! That is so horrendous it should be illegal for that stuff to even exist!
I actually thought the movie was great, for a few reasons:
1. The intro is how you do exposition right. There's bad exposition like in anime where you have a character explain to the viewer everything that's about to happen or what is happening for the sake of padding out the show. Then there's good exposition, like Sonic being chased by Robotnik then cutting to the story like it was his explanation of how he ended up in this mess. Also, Longclaw is no more out-of-place than the humans on Earth and isn't exactly a grotesque design unlike Sonic's original one.
2. The movie provides context for why Sonic spits out pop culture references on a regular basis and also why he may not know of certain things like chili dogs or a bucket list. He's been living in secrecy and spying on humans for the past ten years because his guardian told him to stay hidden. He also wasn't raised with the same morals on Mobius as a human child on Earth would have been. He is basically a child hedgehog who was raised on spying on television. And yes, all it would have taken is for him to spy on some kids playing Fortnite to know the floss, so I'm willing to excuse him doing that dance.
3. You criticise Sonic for not knowing how to use a map despite knowing what Amazon is. How is that so strange? He hasn't been educated, he obviously picked up everything from TV and observing people in Green Hills going about their everyday lives. There are kids in Britain and America who don't know what the fuck most vegetables are despite being in the school system so why is this such a bad concept to grasp?
4. I thought I was going to hate Sonic for being obnoxious as hell. I didn't. The movie makes it clear that Sonic is hyperactive, naive, young, starved of affection and doesn't necessarily know what he's doing wrong. His demeanor didn't bother me and in this case, Sonic's transformation went from a character that ran away from others to someone facing danger head-on.
That being said, there were a few things that I thought the movie did wrong, the biggest being Jim Carrey's portrayal of Dr Robotnik. I thought I was going to love his interpretation of Robotnik and I certainly liked how witty the character was. But Robotnik comes across as an even more unlikeable holier-than-thou asshole than Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty - which I guess is a deliberate choice? But Robotnik isn't purely evil and he has at least some redeeming qualities, if you look at everything outside of SatAM that is.
Point is: Robotnik felt more like Jim Carrey trying to play a one-dimensional cartoon villain with the same wacky goofball shtick that he's been typecasted for, rather than feeling like a genuine villain with genuine motives. His main reason for hating other people is a superiority complex due to his incredibly high IQ.
Here's the thing though, Eggman doesn't show his remorseful side until things get to a point of extremes. SA2 for example, only had him actually helping Sonic out when the world was about to be destroyed by the Biolizard. SA1 had him try and destroy Chaos, but even then that was purely out of revenge rather than remorse. Eggman only ever helps out when there is a bigger threat at hand, and even then his reason for helping is almost always vengeance for being double crossed.
Well, it looks like his personality does change at the emd credits scene, so many its setting him up to turn into the good ol' robotnik that we know and love/hate.
josh patterson wait he did? That’s cute! Family bonding!
And, robotnik was an orphan
@ren That's how the human brain works, so... (and yes he's not human, but he pretty much behaves like one)
Love the video! Keep up the good work!
Having "Urhurm" come in made me so happy, I will see the sequel if only for them!
The floss is accurate to the character - he’s always been overly ‘cool’ and ‘hip’
When Sonic started flossing, one of my buddies got up, walked out of the viewing, I swear I heard distant screaming in the lobby, then he walked back in lol
XD
Dont blame em
Perfectly justifiable.
I spit out water and did not look at the movies for what felt like 5 minutes
I died inside as I always am when I see it, but a kid near me gasped and excitedly told their parents he was flossing so I just sighed and thought, 'well if the kids enjoy it, fine.'
I hadn’t thought it that way before, but I think you just described the precise reason why I can’t stand the floss. At least most dances you can achieve from a natural position (walking and then transitioning into a moon walk, as a fun example), but for the floss you have to specifically stop, position yourself, and then explicitly move your arms in the opposite direction of your hips, which is a fascinating feat, mind you, but so unnerving when it’s done without context. It’s like someone just doing the YMCA moves without music or context, just standing there making letters and staring at you dramatically until you acknowledge the reference
4:53 I think game theory did a theory and I’m pretty sure they concluded that if he explored the entire world at max speed and hit San Francisco last. The journey with the cop would be way faster.
tails at the end of the movie tho.... it literally almost killed me out of happiness
Dude
You cannot fathom my enjoyment of tails as a character
I think it's more that the Sonic fandom is so absurdly large and non-homogeneous that they kind of *have* to play to the absolute safest target they can.
Honestly the best part of the sonic movie is the jim Carrey screams that he loves lattes at his assistant
This is honestly one of the very few reviews I've seen about the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie that I totally agree with.
I want them to release the unedited version, with monster sonic
Omg yes! Oh how I would have the biggest bad movie party with that version! 😂
Sonic Unleaded
I’m glad I’m not the only one. I also want to see the original Tails design
Jellicle Sonic
Monster Sonic would likely have only been in the parts that were shown in the trailers. Generally animators don't animate anything that isn't absolutely necessary until the trailer is out.
“Roger Craig Smith has been killing it as Sonic” See again, splintered Sonic fanbase. You might think hes great as sonic, theres plenty whod disagree. Including myself. I find his line delivery in most the games weak, and dont really find his voice fitting for Sonic. Meanwhile the dialogue could use work but I thought Ben Schwartz was leagues better than Roger.
With the games I lie the blame on bad writing and direction. You see Roger really shine in Boom and the Twitter takeovers.
@@ConsoleWarriors That and his other roles in other games. See Dying Light, where he's Kyle Crane, the main character (I'm pretty sure) and also the Wonderful 101 where he's Wonder Blue. The second one stands out to me personally because it's got the same cocky energy that Sonic has but he also gets super emotional. And it's not sadness, just. It's anger. I've never heard such intense dialogue about grief and betrayal and vengeance and such ever before, at least in a game.
He's also Mirage in Apex Legends, which is another "character that talks fast and makes a ton of jokes to hide how lonely he is", so he'd be great movie!Sonic. And he does well enough as that character that they've put his character in a TON of promotional content, including rigging up a real-time motion capture thing so he could banter with the host of the game awards, live, as Mirage.
Like, don't get be wrong, I adored Ben--hell, I love every actor who's ever played Sonic! But I definitely think that Smith would've been great on the movie, and I definitely think that it's the writing that hurts modern Sonic.
@@BrightBlueInk Yeah that Mirage bit at the Game Awards was kinda funny, or at least rather original. Had a lot of charm (that game awards was kinda weaksauce though). Anyhow, the way I see it, Ben and Roger are kinda neck in neck, but I know less about Ben's other roles so I dunno
Console Warriors rogers voice fits with sonic boom sonic
"There's a lot of Sonics.... how am I supposed to love a character if I don't know which one it is!?!"
Gotta Open your Heart Dude... :3
Cringy pfp, check
Sonic related, check
":3", check.
We got a furry on our hands, boys. The worst kind.
*You know what to do.*
B.E.G.O.N.E. T.H.O.T!!!!!
It may not be canon to the games, but this is as close to an origin story we're going to get. That is why we have been going crazy about the movie.
Tiny correction: the flossing dance didn’t replace the original one, he flosses first, then did the one in the trailer.
Wait, Tails was voiced by video game Tails? I never noticed
I think it's the fact that I didn't notice that makes it a good thing. When Tails spoke, it was just Tails
It’s Colleen O’Shaugnessey. :) If you look on the IMDb page for the movie.
Trust me, the old merch is NOT useless. Give it 20 years and it’ll be worth a ton
The sonic toy thing in the thumbnail is so pure
