Barge Concepts BP-1 Test And Comparison With Shellac's Steve Albini

- The Barge Concepts BP-1 is a fuzz-distortion guitar pedal designed as a clone of a long-out-of-production pedal called the Interfax HP-1 Harmonic Percolator. The original HP-1 is a mainstay of Chicago-based guitarist, recording engineer and studio owner Steve Albini, so we thought it would make a useful video to get some impressions of the BP-1 pedal from a guy who has been using the HP-1 for many years in his main guitar rig.
Steve agreed and so we headed down to his Electrical Audio studio to capture a basic comparison between the BP-1 and its electronic design model, the HP-1.

I own the Barge Concepts BP-1. Got mine in Houston in 2009. I love it. It looks exactly like the one this guy in this video can't use. It would be fun to have his real HP to play with for a day. So glad this video was made. Thank you and thanks to Steve for lending his time to this video.
I dig the disclaimer at the beginning of the video "we got different results" but then you didnt upload those different results lol and its strange because ive heard good things about the BP1 since this vid was uploaded, but you cant try to argue with the guy who made the harmonic percolator a thing. Makes me wonder if this bp1 was defective?
Besides agreeing with what he says, is hard to find discontinued components. Ah! and the saying "sell Smoke" is common here in Argentina in reference to misleading advertising about unique qualities. greetings!

I mean, with components such as metal film resistors, metalized polyester film capacitors, etc. all that marketing to offer something perfect, will not make it sound better. The guitar is not exactly high end audio. I have understood that manufacturers using standard components of the time and what was in large quantities in stock.
You forget that the guy who made the original Percolator was very secretive with the specs, he would try and cover up what type of transistors he was using, the values etc. It's almost impossible to make an exact replica.
It really isn't.
Is there any way to get this pedal? The original I mean? How about a scheme? Or a replica scheme? I can't find nutting and it's drivining me nutS and more crazy than already am. Love the Big Black and Shellac sound and thought I got the sound, now I'm disappointed cuz it's more horrible than this replica smoke in the ass. Getting deaf and crazier, man: someone share some info good god!
In Shellac, Steve really only uses the Hp-1 as a high-drive boost, and rather infrequently, for the thick 'n' chuggy loud parts (like he says here, "as sound effect")-- parts like the intro of Wingwalker etc. I hope that you haven't been chasing his more characteristic bright, grinding, clangy tone ( "Prayer to God", "My Black Ass") using Percolator style pedals. That sound is owed almost entirely to the Intersound IVP and Fender Bassman that Steve uses.
@@BrutalistJr saw him live with the pedal in clear view and he uses it so sparingly. The klangy Big Black tone tho sounds like all of the percolator, e.g. Kerosene with the harmonics.
No sound good on bp1, hf coupling with that, I think they sell smoke as they say around here
