After "Promised You A Miracle", this is probably the best-known song on the album. This song contains my absolute favourite bassline by Derek Forbes. Derek was such a big part of Simple Minds' sound and identity. After he left in 1985, the band were never quite the same for me!

@@jamesadkisson7510 Thanks for your reply. I just based my comment on my listening to UK radio over the years. You will often hear "Promised You A Miracle" and occasionally also "Glittering Prize" but sadly, "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" not so much!

@@sheldonhowells3083honestly I was just wondering. It sounds like a hit. I imagine there was more Simple Minds on the radio in the UK than America. The only song I’m sure of that was on the radio here was Don’t You Forget About Me. Luckily I saw them in a middle sized club before that song. After that they came back to stadiums.

@@jamesadkisson7510 I have just had a look on Wikipedia and discovered that "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" was released as the third single off the album, but only reached 36 in the UK charts. The previous two singles had broken into the top 20. Perhaps, at that point, most fans had already bought the album.

I´m from 1989 - My dad often heard SM on CDS, MTV etc. The rediscovering of SM and the older songs gives me flashbacks to the 90´s of being a kid. It´s funny how smelling and hearing can bring you back to the simple times.
And yes, the bassline is a killer in this song, amazing album.

So many great memories are attached to this album and song. Thank you for listening to it. And the Chris Squire reference. I just finished reading an article in Rolling Stone, where Billy Sherwood was talking about some of the stuff that he’s been doing with Yes, and reflecting on his experience with Chris Squire. Agreed, the bass just slaps in this song. ❤

New Gold Dream is my favourite album of all time. I walked around with it in my head in my youth. Somebody Up There Likes You will be my funeral entrance, and Big Sleep will be the exit. I’m sure I can squeeze in Hunter and the Hunted somewhere during the service too..
So I’ve really loved your reviews of this album….But, unpopular opinion, I hate this track. Every note of it. This and Promised You A Miracle were always skipped on my Walkman. Can’t put my finger on why. There’s really nothing bad about these tracks. You like what you like I guess.

Did a small amount of DJ'ing back in the early 80's, and the dancers always liked this one. I think it's the simplest track on the album, maybe the most "commercial," but as you say the different elements all fit together well. In addition to the bass line, I've always like Charlie's guitar swells and syncopated chording here. Another good song from an album that doesn't have a bad one.

@@JustJP A little later than this Bowie's 'Let's Dance' album was a biggie.(That would be a good LP for you to react to!) Title track, "Modern Love,' and 'Cat People' were all frequent requests. Peter Gabriel's 'Shock the Monkey' was a very popular one. Also The Fixx, 'One Thing Leads to Another.' There were more obviously, but those come immediately to mind.

I've not seen your fine content for a long time now. Dunno why. Sorry!
I watched your earlier Propaganda/Duel video just after this. Being Scottish, I'll make a connection (eventually) concerning these 2 songs .
In the 1980s my mate/work colleague was selected for Jury duty at Paisley Sheriff Court (he and I had been involved in initiating criminal cases there as well).
He was swapping background info with other jurors. One of them said he played in bands & wrote songs - it was Derek Forbes who plays bass on this.
I used to play bass in bands, & could do some of his stuff.
Hennyways ..... the connection is - Derek played bass on Duel, after leaving Simple Minds. You said you liked some of the bass playing on it.
Forgotten why I've posted this now. 😀

@@robgrano6814 you're quite right to point the chronology of these recordings. Brandon, ( he of retro reactions channel) shocked me recently after playing a Sylvian & Sakamoto hit from 1983 (possibly forbidden colours? I'm too inept to confirm sorry! ). Why was I shocked you ask? It seems that the synth string staccato stings of TiTR had been lifted from that older song.
You can probably guess how humbling this was.
Likewise, If I had the Grace to swallow my pride, purchase NewGold Dream and invest a good two days of digesting everything about it, I'd probably end up very inspired and loving it
The problem is I'm no longer a seventeen year old dreamer. I'm now set in my suspicious ways and my faculties are now in Thinking Mode:CriticaL.
(Mixed with aheavydoseof idiosyncratiK The Day Today Partridge foresight)
So, will my greatest hits double cd suffice?
or do i need the early LPs?
Don't answer! I know what yer gonna say! Must I though? Really? 😀 Charity shops have been put on stand-by! Forbes on bass alert.
Before you ask, I'm on the look out for Sylvian and Sakamoto too.

@@HippoYnYGlaw I'd suggest listening to New Gold Dream in its entirety then working backwards, mainly because it's front-to-back solid, while the earlier LP's are slightly more spotty. On the greatest hits thing you're getting only 10 tracks from the first five albums combined, because the collection deals primarily with the singles.
