Again one of those songs where I really envy you that you can listen to this for the very first time. My first listen is more than 40 years ago and I still remember how I felt. It was spectacular, it still is and until today it remains one of the fans’ favorites in live concerts which I had the pleasure to attend 6 so far.

"New Gold Dream", "I Travel" and "Theme For Great Cities" I could listen to every morning to start the day.
There's more great work from Simple Minds, but these three are my absolute favourites.

I love this song. It's like a sonic wall of music that just washes over you... from the driving drums, to the incredible layers of keyboards, to the propulsive bass, and the great, floating guitar lines, all with Jim Kerr's deep, soulful vocals. It just all meshes together.

This track is a powerful opener to the second side of the album! I love Michael McNeil's keyboard work on this song.
I just love the whole feel and atmosphere of this album, without ever worrying too much over what Jim is singing about!

Simple Minds, back at the start of the 1980’s was such a great band, New Gold Dream was possibly the pinnacle for me after the excellent Sons and Fascination/Sister Feeling Call and before the following release, sparkle in the rain. Sadly after SITR it was a slow but steady decline as they found fame in America and chased the money. In the UK there was a brilliant Live Music programme called ‘The Tube’ and I recall Simple Minds playing live their new songs from their new Album, New Gold Dream and they sang this song live, it was epic, the Synth player and Bass guitarist were stellar. You can see it all on UA-cam.

Simple Minds followed a similar path to Roxy Music l feel, both bands starting off with more complex 'interesting' songs. Later albums were more commercial from both bands, although l have the later records from both bands it's the Simple Minds albums l prefer and all was not lost with some good tunes such as Travelling Man, 7 Deadly Sins and Andy Warhol's Dead for example. I have always liked Real to Real Cacophony perhaps the most with their early albums.

The years 81/82/83/84 meant that Jim Kerr and the band were positively projecting themselves into the future. 81 was the signing to Virgin Records with their double album Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call, the moment when Simple Minds' career began to take off, even though they had already released three albums on Arista Records which hadn't done much commercially (but were good artistically). Musically, it's a different story according to Jim Kerr:
"We were struggling. We had the backing track. One of the big influences on us was a genre music called Kraut Rock - it's not one of the most flattering terms - it was essentially these German garage bands namely Neu, Can and another called La Dusselldorf, and basically they'd hit on a chord and repeat it and repeat it - until you actually felt the thing was moving. And New Gold Dream was an exercise in that. Again the lyrics were coming from this idea - I suppose we felt there was some sort of alchemy going on in our band and we felt we'd used our influences and with our influences we'd cooked up something of our own. And I think New Gold Dream is about that - and the title track itself is also in a way about that."
Note that there are two drummers on this track and here's what bassist Derek Forbes had to say about it in 2018:
When it came to recording the song, Mike Ogletree and Mel Gaynor recorded their drum parts simultaneously in The Townhouse at four o'clock in the morning. "On New Gold Dream it's both of them. I was in there on bass to play along with them. The two of them were facing each other with a kit each in the live room - and I was in the live room with them. So the three of us were there. They were looking at each other - the two of them. They both had a drum machine as well - and then there was percussion after that. So you've got two full drum kits and two drummers playing at the same time, the drum machine and then a lot of percussion to top it. So it was just monster. If you imagine that sound - and I was doing my tank division bass."

Never see much mention of Real to Real Cacophony album. Real to Real and Premonition a couple of tracks as good as any of their earlier tunes.

@@keithjones7390 In my opinion, Real to Real Cacophony, Empires and Dance plus the double album Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call are Simple Minds' best work and where the band experimented successfully. Of course, their first three albums for Arista were unfortunately unsuccessful at the time, and only garnered a small amount of critical acclaim.

"After an album obsessed by fear we'd made an album looking to the future. In spite of everything. That explains the years to come. Also, 1984 was taboo. New Gold Dream went against that. It said: let's hear the news, good or bad"

That’s my take on the lyrics: they’re just celebrating their era. The song came out in 1982 right? What they feel is…it’s like a golden age to them - or maybe it’s just what they hope…and there’s a wish as well, that this golden moment extends until subsequent years (that ‘s why 82 83 84..)

Imagine this: my brother went once to Lisbon for a few days - we live about 380 km away, which, for our scale, is a bit - and at night he went out with his friends. Get a beer, hanging around, that usual stuff. It happens entering in a bar where there was music. Guess what, it was Simple Minds who was playing. I suppose, a reduced members and acoustic set, but... As if nothing, there they were! The band that fill stadiums were there playing for less than 50 people.
    Aren't we all humans?
Those we learned to admire, to say the least, are just like us, have our size and can be close as we need to be.
It sounds a joke, but just a pretext to get philosophical.
    Thank you, music. 😊
