I love monochromatic designs. I stitched one to give my daughter this Christmas - the fabric is a light teal and the floss was a dark teal. I think it’s lively when the fabric and floss are in the same color family - just different tones. I personally prefer when the floss is the darker tone over the fabric, but it also works when fabric is the darker tone with the floss being a lighter tone. I think it’s lovely when the color/tone difference isn’t stark - but rather more subtle. I look forward to what you end up designing with these monochromatic ideas!
Hi Arlene! Always an interesting and informative flosstube! Thank you for sharing. From the Christmas City, Bethlehem Pennsylvania 🎄, I am wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday.
I'm really not the person to ask about colors, but this past year I've stitched a lot of Quaker patterns that were mostly monochromatic. I used white as the fabric color because I didn't want the color of the fabric to compete with the color of the floss nor the design of the motifs. I was pleased with how they turned out. I've read some of the other ideas in the comments...all great ideas, especially the jewel tones on black/dark fabric!
Yes, there are indeed times when a plain white fabric is the absolute best choice to help the colors and the designs look their best. Thanks so much for your thoughts!
I think a great color combination would be a dark blue fabric with silver thread or it could be black fabric with silver/grey thread. I’m excited to see your new masterpiece! Happy Stitching 🧵🪡
What I like to do for monochrome is to find the DMC match to a fabric. 123Stitch is good about listing the closest DMC thread for a fabric. Then I take my DMC color card and look in the family of that DMC thread and either go darker or lighter within that family… I pick a darker thread if the fabric is light in color, or a lighter thread if the fabric is darker. I hope that makes sense.
Hi Arlene! It was nice to see the Antioch mosaic again. I am all about red samplers at the moment (DMC816 on neutral) but in my Stash I have Cirque des Cercles by Ink Circles and the model stitch is stunning, black Zweigart stitched with DMC 111 (yellow-brown variegated). If you google the name of the design there are many lovely monochrome variations people have done. Take care!
How fascinating the Antioch mosaic is! Your stitched masterpiece is beautiful! What is the original made of? Awesome flower book too! This video was so enjoyable and so interesting. Thank you! Have a great new year ahead and can’t wait for the surprise.
Thanks so much! The original mosaic was made of small stones or bits of glass shaped into squares or rectangles. They are not set in the mortar in regular grid-like fashion, more like however they need to be fit to fill in the space, especially because the pieces back then are most certainly not uniform in size. It's easy enough to go down a rabbit hole with a quick google search of "Antioch Mosaics" - so many images will show up. Happy Holidays!

Thanks so much, Saho - so nice to hear from you!
I love doing teal colours on a light grey fabric. It could be a bright teal with a darker grey fabric.
Sounds like a beautiful color combination - thanks for sharing!
Very interesting as always. Have a lovely light filed winter season ✨🥰

I love monochrome stitching when my anxiety is bad as it calms me. I like to stitch on a light tone with a darker tone in the same color family.
Thanks so much - multiple people suggesting the tone on tone idea. Have a wonderful holiday season!
Arlene! Holiday Greetings from Dallas! Happy Chanukah!! I always have liked the way jewel tones pop on black fabric.
Thanks so much, Michael - hope all is well! Thanks for the color suggestion 🙂
Alene love those flower designs! Definitely should do something with those?
Still percolating ideas about the flowers - thanks for stopping by!
Forest green on light willow green....I like dark/light of a single color together. Happy holidays to you! Shalom
Thanks for the suggestion!
Black on a cream color. Or a really dark blue would be amazing.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I love a tone on tone look with monochrome patterns. A mint or light green fabric with a dark green thread is a combo I would like to do soon.
Lots of suggestions for the tone-on-tone idea - thanks so much!
Hello, I think a yellow fabric with a brown overdyed thread would be lovely 🥰 😊
Thanks so much for your thoughts!
I like white opalescent linen and DMC B5200.
