    I am learning Unity with C#. As far as I understand, Unity was pretty much free to use for individual developers or small teams. They have licenses for medium to large companies. But this whole new change smells like a last ditch attempt to grab some cash. Their CEO right now was ex-EA, I think.

      The goal of this is almost certainly to force Unity based mobile games to switch to Unity owned LevelPlay ad platform (since they quietly announced that anyone who does will be exempt from this new runtime fee).
      Mobile gaming huuuuuge, with the amount of money spent on them eclipsing both PC and console, and so it's not surprising greedy execs are attempting to get a large share of it's money (especially since large portion if not majority of mobile games are running on Unity), and indie games are just getting caught in the crossfire.

      I mean, the thing they get money from installing is ridiculous and now I'm gonna feel like shit into replaying games cause the developers would not get shit from it, but only lose money.

    I saw a short that said that unity or a company related to them released an ads company that if you use it for your game they won't charge you the install fee.

    most people skip that both requirements has to be met for unity thing, earn at least 200k in last 12 months, and get 200k downloads, if you have ingame store and you got 200k there, but game got 1m downloads, then you're on 0, but if you have no way of financing the game or it is hobby project, then there's no way they can charge anything according to their own rules

    the CEO who came up with this straight fucked up idea was one of the former CEO of EA. so it's only understandable that a garbage of a human would come up with ideas that would affect the end user like alot

    If unity dials home then nothing prevents you from isolating the process that does that and make the calls manually = you don't need to install the game to make the count go up

    11:00 Unity use estimates because some platform (like iOS) make it almost impossible to identify devices. If I install an app, delete it, and install it again, all the identifiers Unity uses are different. They can’t distinguish new users from returning installs or simple device upgrades.
    Which is why their change sucks so much for mobile devices. New iPhone comes out? Get ready to pay for half of your user base again!
    The really think they are too big to fail and I hope the developers working with them prove them wrong.

    I came up with a new theory just now, and I want to see if it tracks:
    Unity will never improve from here on. It's not that they don't want to, it's that they've crafted a perfect engine and they can't find anything to improve until processors improve more. If they say this out loud, their shareholders are just going to hear "And our profits are going to flatline once everybody has bought this and has no reason to buy a new version for the next decade"
    maybe we really have gotten out of the uncanny valley for graphics and all that's left to do is get everybody's computers strong enough to render it.

    • @Colopty
      @Colopty Рік тому +1

      They haven't crafted the perfect engine though? Like they're pretty well known to constantly deprecate features and replacing them with half functional ones that they then abandon, and other engines on the market have much nicer features that they have no equivalent to. Their main real advantage isn't that their engine is perfect (it barely qualifies as good), it's that their community is bloody fantastic, which means that if you want to do a thing in that engine you can readily find 100 people telling you exactly how to do it, whereas with other engines you might be able to dig up 1-2 resources for a given topic if you put some effort in.
      The real reason they're doing it is simple: The company has been in a nosedive for years and they expect it to crash. Before that happens, they want to scrape as much money as they can from the mobile gaming market.

      It seemed like normal stock sell off from an executive with lots of stock but people want the story to be juicier and don’t really know anything about economics in the first place. The Unity change being retroactive is enough bad press without chasing shadows.

    Stop spreading misinformation about the Unity drama, if the guy who got his game installed 7M times didnt make much money (less than 1M USD), he doesnt owe anything to Unity. People are reacting emotionally because twitter and press dont do the maths and feed on attention triggered by outrage.

    10:16 Yeah, as someone uninformed, that's the part most sus and dishonest. If Unity wish to use a new license from here on, then so be it. People may complain, but that's their business decision and it's up to anyone to decide if it's worth it or not. But changing the license retroactively and demanding compensation? That's messed up. Were they running a scam from the beginning? I'm honestly surprised that something like that would be even possible. I hope they get sued to oblivion, but since they did that, it probably means they are legally safe and know what they are doing. But never say never... people do stupid things, after all.

    • @pow_dunx
      @pow_dunx Рік тому

      They allegedly won’t be counting any installs except “new installs” (whatever tf that means) starting 1/1/2024, so devs theoretically won’t retroactively owe for an existing install base, but there’s such a lack of clarity on the methodology they’ll use to count what a particular dev owes them that I don’t believe for a second that they’re not going to put numerous devs out of business. If any game dev in early stages of development isn’t actively abandoning the unity engine, they’re going to be cattle to the revenue slaughter down the road when Unity needs to make their earnings targets 3 quarters from now.

    • @lukebeich
      @lukebeich Рік тому

      @@pow_dunx that's better, but I imagine that will also apply to games already published with the previous license. So basically it wouldn't be surprising if some devs will take down their own game to avoid the new fees. That is still a scummy move.
