  • Automation is an essential tool in any recording DAW and is essential to a well balanced and dynamic mix or production - but it has some drawbacks... Once you write some automation in Pro Tools you can no longer use your faders - because they are set to FOLLOW the automation you just wrote! Which, of course, makes sense - but is very frustrating if you like mixing with faders and want to make a simple tweak!
Well luckily, there is a solution that allows you to regain control of your Pro Tools volume faders while retaining any volume automation you've already written! It's called the "trim" feature and it's a Pro Tools must know!

I wonder if it's possible to automate the trim, so we can add automation on top of the previous writen automation wthout loosing it?

Yes, you absolutely can automate the trim layer in Pro Tools! The underlying automation will still be retained but also follow the trim automation as well. Example being if you have a really detailed vocal automation in a chorus but wanted it overall to be 2 db louder, you could automate the chorus chunk of the DAW's timeline to be 2db louder with the Trim Automation, and all that detailed automation under it would still continue as well.
Short answer, it will work exactly how you hoped haha
