I was issued that jacket for Iraq. Also issued the tent later. The design is great. I loved them both! Unfortunately had to turn them back into Supply with leaving Army. I just got this tent from a dealer nearby for $50! Smells a bit but I will take care of that. Great video!! Enjoy that down jacket!
I had one of these, given to me. I also bough the Lightfighter 1 in OCP, both of which the purpose is motorcycle camping. I ended up keeping the Lightfighter one, just because it has two full vestibules I can use in bad weather. These one person tents are great though for the bike-all in one shelters that, if its just for a night or two, work perfect. If I am going for several nights, I take a larger tent-but overnights, these are ideal. Also, the model you have, has that old familiar wet weather bag "stink". I got out in 04, went in in 88-all 11B. We didnt have tents (with th exception of the shelter half, which was never used), we just used our ponchos. Hell, when we got the MSS system, I was ecstatic! That was a tent that was the size of our old school sleeping bags!!! I remember the first night using it...we got frost and freezing rain. Didnt feel a thing!!!
Greetings from across the pond: the UK. Ive had one of these for about a year. Indeed its Squaddie proof as we may call our lads and lasses in the Army. I have found it to be very intuitive and practical. Its a bit weird to find so much black inside a tent but its spacious and practical so when its time to hit the sack you wont notice. Its hard wearing and although the camouflage isn't too practical in the spring and summer for stealth camping, in the autumn and winter it blends in with the grey sky, and sparse woodland well enough. A good review
Good video, thanks! Idea: Spray a stripe of paint across the tent poles so it's easier to see which one belongs where. And, for the keyboard commandos, no one sets up a tent under fire. SemperFi!

Great video, if it ain't raining you ain't training. I used to hump 4 season North Face tents up the sides of mountains in my younger years. I was wondering why you roll the tent back up. We would stuff the rain fly into the sack first then the tent and finally ground cloth on top and cinch the bag closed. The poles would be stored in the pack vertically along the back pad so they don't bend. When you pull the tent system out of the bag its in order to set up again. Also, the thinking back then was, if you keep folding the tent along the same lines it will eventually damage the waterproofing because you are stretching the fibers to make a fold. Anywho, hope this helps.
I've heard of that and I do it with my tarps. I haven't had any issues with the tent though. If it is pouring and I wanna get out of there, I will just stuff it all in the top of my ruck
I'm pretty sure thr old conventional wisdom has changed - the thinking being that stuffing creates tons of tiny creases which are simply duplicated (despite thinking they aren't replicated - they are) whereas folding and rolling neatly limits the creases to a few areas while leaving large panels unaffected by the creases stuffing creates.
Hi Randall, that didn't look too painful setting up in the dark. I've had to do that more times than I wanted and I hate it, but sometimes you have no choice. That's what I love about military gear, the weight is worth it! Good to know you can throw the ICS in the dryer. Thanks!👍🏕

Because of your first video on this tent that I watched again today because it popped up, i was checking them out on line, and a Sportsman’s Guide ad had a used one for $109. That tent is now sold and coming to me. It is a groovy little setup you can throw anywhere with serious capacity. I am really finding your channel useful. This makes me want one of these tents now. I hadn't been big on military surplus stuff until recently. Thanks for all the great info. Take Care and Stay Safe.
Very nice tent in my opinion. I'm used to sleeping in a bivy sack with a sleeping bag inside of it or no bag but just a bivy sack and woodland camo blanket. This would be an upgrade for having all around covering.
I put some colored tape on my long poles so I know which ones are which, works great on my big ass tent with 6 sets of poles. Would work great on a smaller tent especially for night setup.
Great stuff ... I got bought the ICS last summer and I love this tent .. only drawback is it's hard 2 get around here in Germany ... The dryer tip = damm never thought that cool idear...
Just got my tent in today and set it up in the basement as soon as I opened it. Probably be trying out my new MSS and tent this weekend. I’m sure the old lady that lives next door will think I’m nuts but it sure seems like a great time to try it out.
That “wrong pole” did my heart good. I was sitting here saying how the heck did he know that was the right pole?🤔 Thanks. I bought one of these not long ago and for me it was a royal bitch to set up because the rain fly pole would get stuck and jammed up going thru the sleeves on top of the fly and then when I’d try and back the pole out a little to unjam it the shock corded sections would come apart and then it would be next to impossible to put them back together inside the sleeve (and you can’t pull the pole out UNTIL you put all the sections back together) without part of the sleeve getting jammed in between the sections that came apart. You have convinced me to dig this tent out of the closet I tossed it to the back of and give it another chance. Thank you again.
Love your humour, my friend. And real-life conditions. That's what my kit goes through so good to see this tent is tough. Not that I'd expect a military tent to not be. Love your put down about Ramadi. Respect. Gotta love Al Anbar. I was in Baghdad 2007/2008 but somewhat calmer.
Great video, thanks for doing this. From a product design standpoint, the only "problem" I noticed was that one of the rods is not the same size as the other two, which slowed you down a bit. It would be better if they were all the same length, but if not that, then the shorter one should be a different color. Or of course you could just wrap some tape around it, so you know at a glance that it's the short one.
Much nicer than the old school shelter half I was issued. Only time I ever used that POS was bivouac in basic training. Rest of the time was using a hooch or ranger roll. Thinking about picking up one of these, I just wish it had some ventilation.
I do a few things different on setting it up. One maybe worth mentioning. I put a wrap of white electrical tape near each end of the pole for the fly for ID. I got tired of mixing them up. I don't know how old mine is, but the blackout material started flaking off of the fly when I set it up at -14 F. Minnesota ya no.

I've watched this video a few times now and every time it reminds me why I don't wear jeans in the woods. That wet knee would drive me nuts! Love this tent tho! Mine should be here tomorrow!
Awesome as always sir! Thanks for more info on this tent. I have the TCOP & the 2 man Marine tent but I want one of these as well. Got a used one two years ago but had to return it. It was in too bad shape to use. Looking at a new one on EBay if I can swing the dough. Also found a new Medium OCP Ruck. More wants than money!
That looks a lot like my Eureka Backcountry 1. The third pole on mine always wants to take a different shape every time I set it up, never lays the same way twice. lol Be careful with stuff sacks. Mine blew away when I wasn't looking, since it was near a lake I couldn't find it in the woods or see it on the water. Pack your empty stuff sacks right into your pack or put something heavy on it.

Thanks for all the videos on this tent I just bought one for my son for Christmas. Love the fact you just threw it in the dryer to dry. What's the best way to clean it? I think I bought one the traveled with you on your all expenses paid 20 day tour of Eastern Europe. It smells to high heaven. Thanks for your service!
Thanks for sharing this, Randall. Looking for one online now. I'm assuming that if the ICS can handle the drier, it could handle being washed in a front loading washer on delicate on occasion? Or perhaps after getting the used surplus item home for the first time?
I pulled the trigger on this, based off of your review. I just purchased this tent, without the poles or stakes. I'm going to improvise those things...meaning I bought some poles that should fit the tent. Ultralight sounds great, but I don't trust it, because it seems to be too lite. That and the fact that I don't have 1'000's of dollars to afford an ultralight setup. I guess its the debate between, get the gear that makes your life a little easier or acclimate to heavier, more durable that one can obtain at an affordable price. The guys that fought WWII, Korean and Vietnam would give their left nut for a tent like that, or the USMC ILBE (which I have.)
Thats the point. I bought a eureca tcop tent one week ago. This Material is designt to use it for hard conditions and that ofer a long term. I dont belive in these super light waight tents. Greets from germamy
Cool Randall. I just dont see how that tent, its setup/ break down or weight can bee an issue for anybody. I would have loved that tent for motorcycle camping back in the day. Or for hiking. Because of injuries over the years I dont use tents anymore. Im a hammock guy now. Its nice to see you informing the buttercups out there. Live Life Large, Its Shorter Than You Think!
Many thanks! After your review elsewhere, I ordered an ICS on eBay for a planned drive-and-camp tour of our marvelous country. I do have a question. After camping in well below freezing conditions at the base of Mt. Rainier, I discovered the value of a tent liner. My breath was freezing on the nylon walls of the tent. Every burst of wind resulted in tiny ice particles falling on my face. As soon as I got back, I turned an old cotton sheet into a tent liner. Cotton absorbs moisture rather than raining it down. I know the military makes cotton liners for its large tents. Did it ever make one for the ICS? If not, I imagine it's be quite easy to make one for ourselves.
I have not been in the military I’m a fireman and I was able to set the tent up extremely easy with the proper sleeping bag and pads I was very comfortable it kept the wind out I slept until late in the day could not tell it was even daytime out Me and one other person fit in this tent we were both pretty comfortable in it. Thinking about getting the light fighter two-man marine tent so I can fit two colors of PBR in there💪🇺🇸.
Good video buddy, im going to buy one. I go to Dartmoor a lot, (which always seems to try and kill you) so this will be excellent .......can you buy these new? I can only find used....all the best.
But, to be completely honest, I checked again: I think it was down to the specific tent itself or the waterproofing spray I've used with it in the past.Because the black rubber lining inside has always tended to stick together even after hand washing in the past, so that it later came away from the fabric when I pulled it apart. I still wouldn't put it back in the tumble dryer. Nevertheless the tent itself is great and currently available really cheaply in Germany from Mogeha Army if you need one in reserve ;)
I bought one of these off ebay and the fly was stuck together....took my time and got it opened up.....the black coating on the inside of the fly delaminated, leaving a white sticky adhesive on the material. I like the tent. The waterproof floor black coating is fine. Just wondering if you have suggestions to fix the coating.
Just bought an ICS on ebay sold as very good condition. I set it up yesterday to check it over and had one issue. As an 80's tank mechanic we never had these tents so I have zero experience with them. The rainfly pole loops were stuck together. It took me probably an hour to get the fly pole pushed through the loops. I was concerned about tearing it so I was trying to be careful. I've been flushing the loops with water and simple green hoping to fix the problem. I'm sure this tent has been sitting around for years and maybe heat and humidity has made the rainfly black underside sticky. Is this a common problem with the rainfly?
Damp cold hurts. A lot of civilian gear is semi-disposable; intended for one season or expedition of hard use, then replaced. GI gear is intended to last indefinitely, through years hard use and multiple issues to possibly several different individuals or units. I've noticed that complaints of gear failure soared when light weight became a military priority and civvy-style gear was used in combat conditions.
That's how a lot of surplus gear is now. That should give you a good idea of what people are expecting for the future. Highly doubt a lot of people having camping on their mind. Know what I mean?
Thanks for the patience you have when explaining things. One questions, my black liner on the inside tent fly is chipping off, any spray or something I can use?
hey are you still thinking about doing the video about packing for combat ops bc I never see those anywhere it is always packing for boot camp and to go to like Okie or korea
You know your sh*t and that's why i follow. That being said...check out the Litefighter-1, you'll Luv it!! That's the one i rock. Strapped to the bottom of that Molle-2 Assault Bag, that we discussed.
Hahahahahaha I remember throwing my bivvy bag in the dryer in front of a bunch of trainees and seeing the look of horror on their faces! Sure enough when I pulled it out it was good as new! Can't beat military surplus!
The flaw with this system is if you are in a torrential downpour the inner will be soaked by the time you get the fly over the top. A system that puts both the inner and the fly up together is better but from an ex infanteer's point of view it's an improvement over a basha!

Live Life Large, Its Shorter Than You Think!
awesome! thanks!
Well done sir.
Good idea! Of course the army never figured that out

Cool!
Which colors?
I did that with mine, and all the seam tape came off from the inside of the rain fly. Sucks!!! but I love the tent and still use it
In the dryer? Then you had it too hot
Just like your rifle, the dryer has a LOW setting.
Is the a lightfighter tent. That's what I am using.
Good video can't remember seeing anyone putting a tent away..atb Mitch 🇬🇧.
Love this tent. Only question is where do the stakes go?
Good video buddy, im going to buy one. I go to Dartmoor a lot, (which always seems to try and kill you) so this will be excellent .......can you buy these new? I can only find used....all the best.
After the dryer, I had to to throw the "gruntproof" tent in the bin - great tip!
👍🙂.....doing it right the first time.
Loved this, even in the dryer…..
Thank you ☺️
HOOOAH I love it. No sissy here I pack that tent with the rest of my non ultralight gear all day long and I'm 60 years old. No problem.
Dwayne
Awesome.
They sell PBR in Germany?
Amazing.
New ICU's are SOLD OUT, everywhere. Only Pre-Owned are available on eBay.
That's how a lot of surplus gear is now. That should give you a good idea of what people are expecting for the future. Highly doubt a lot of people having camping on their mind. Know what I mean?
@@daytonasixty-eight1354 Yes, most definitely!
I like the tent how would it fit a man and his women for a few nights out in the woods with a basic load out
Kickass video.
Dude! I got to get me one of those!
I wrapped a short strip of white cloth tape at the 4 ends of the 2 long poles so I could see which was which even in the dark
Honestly, I have no idea why I didn't tape the short one... At the time, it seemed super smart taping the long ones...
Thanks for the patience you have when explaining things. One questions, my black liner on the inside tent fly is chipping off, any spray or something I can use?
Flex seal, the brush on style
Since your first video on this tent I tried to get one in Germany. Any idea where I might get one?
I'm keeping my eyes out for one to fall off a truck.
@@GruntProof 👍😀
You can get the follow up version in good old m81 on eBay for around 240 euros... just search for "Eureka tcop"
@@DocFischer Danke. 👍
hey are you still thinking about doing the video about packing for combat ops bc I never see those anywhere it is always packing for boot camp and to go to like Okie or korea
Yes
You know your sh*t and that's why i follow. That being said...check out the Litefighter-1, you'll Luv it!! That's the one i rock. Strapped to the bottom of that Molle-2 Assault Bag, that we discussed.
Cool, thanks!
Got ? If don't mind would this tent be big enough for a couple ?
Hahahahahaha I remember throwing my bivvy bag in the dryer in front of a bunch of trainees and seeing the look of horror on their faces!
Sure enough when I pulled it out it was good as new!
Can't beat military surplus!
Aw wrong pole. Don't get any more real than that.
The flaw with this system is if you are in a torrential downpour the inner will be soaked by the time you get the fly over the top. A system that puts both the inner and the fly up together is better but from an ex infanteer's point of view it's an improvement over a basha!
Bravo!
I have this tent but never set it up below freezing. Do the plastic clips get stiff in the cold?
I don't remember having that problem
Uncle Randall: What did you use to record the audio? I don't see a wireless lapel mic. It came out perfect.
Thanks! It's just the GoPro 7. If you're outside it has great close-micing for some reason
@@GruntProof Wow! That's impressive.
Cool wall
Guten Morgen Randall from a non keyboard hero 😁
maybe it would be an idea to mark the last or longest pole with some colored tape! ?
Greetings from Rhineland Palatinate
Jürgen
Good idea!
@@GruntProof 😉👍
Great video thanks
Another awesome video
Great video much appreciated !!!
