Man, you have such a wealth of knowledge. I learn something new and useful from you in every video. Especially the ones when you work on the cars/vans.
There’s a great thread on the Samba in the forums section that I found a while back that details what parts are correct for a ‘54 / ‘55 stock beetle. I have read through it a few times in pursuit of having a correct motor for my ‘54. They were apparently a lot of changes that were 1 - 2 year only items.
Most channels i watch end up with a car that's patina'd on the outside and has an immaculate engine under the lid. You've done the opposite Mike;) Great vid and looking forward to seeing this bug finally 100% done, good to see/hear it move under it's own power.
Excellent attention to detail Mike. You leave no stone unturned to get it all running properly. It shows you have decades of experience. Looking forward for more videos of this awesome and amazing restoration. 👏
I like to do the minimum Just to get an engine to run and then tune it. Just rebuild the carb. I'm sure there's some more passages clogged.i don't trust the accelerator pump you have an ultrasonic cleaner too. I believe. Replace filter, points, plugs, condensers, and wires. Anyway, it's looking good, brother. ✌️
Hey Mike, A great video. You certainly have some awesome problem solving capabilities going on there. One thing I'm finding with heater boxes is it's easier to put them on once the engine is in. There are too many variables going on with aftermarket to original to bent. But then I'm lucky enough to have a lift. I'm looking forward to part two. ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Always good to see the progress. On the lack of power issue, check the accelerator cable linkage is giving you full throttle. I have just had the same issue on a 1956 and like you thought it was a compression or coil issue, the cable wasn't giving full throttle so all great until you hit a hill!
Mike showing us the reality...."worked on this all day"...hey, that sounds very familar. I am amazed that the tins etc all came apart, have to love CA weather.
Looking good! Make sure your camera focus right several times while i watch its out of focus. Other than that its a wonderful video, i watched the whole thing! 👍
Never saw a VW Roll Cant Hardley... Rolls down one hill, can't roll up the next! You got that engine running that is more than most would do. Like you said - looks like it needs a valve job. Ought to be simple.
Mine had a stuck vacumn advance and a clogged up intake riser. The advance freed.up and is fine now the tolerance is really tight and a little.corrosion seized it.
Hey Mike thanks for the cool video! Is there a 36 horse carburetor rebuild video anywhere? I cannot find one anywhere? People over tighten the clamp up on the carburetor and it deforms the little brass Barb which causes it to spit out right?
Not sure if it’s my reception but I see the camera focus going in and out. Great job in doing things right. Other people would’ve done a half ass job just to get clicks on a “will it run” video.
IN CA is was pretty standard. I asked at a few shops that are still around. Nobody has ever seen one that caused engine fire. And many of us have seen engine fires. usually the carb looses the barb.
So I just replaced my belt with a continental I have 11 shims total 9 inside 2 outside. I am the 2nd owner with the original alternator or generator don’t know which. Should I remove 2 of them?
I often here about the importance of checking tappet clearance on VW engines. Do they close up, and if so, will Stellite valves and seat inserts improve valve train durability?
I looked at a Chiltons book on VWs and one of the exploited pictures showed the clutch disc with the center hub mounted with the extended part of the hub going to the transmission, your clutch disc may be reversed. The part of the hub that extends farther than the other side is or was mounted to go into the flywheel. That what I saw, maybe you saw it , sorry if I interfered. I watch & enjoy your programs. We have 2.5 VW’s, a 58 pan w/engine, 63 Baja w/1500 engine, and a 66 w/o engine. I need your expertise. Thanks
Seems like it needs the jets matched to Commifornia fuel... up 1 on the idle, 2 on the main~ I think I went to 130~ on a 1600 w/a # drill set, yours probably would like a 125~
Love the will it runs!!!
That motor sounds damn good...love to see how you do your trouble shooting!! VDUBS Rule!
lovely to see it at this stage, car looks great love your work
It’s alive !!! Great video Mike 🤙👍

One step closer, though. Great work, Mike.
Great video, impressive the motor is in that good of shape.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Looking forward to the next one, how you solved the car not going up hill. I'm learning alot thanks for all you do!!!! 🙏

You will get it sorted out. You always do. The car looks amazing🔧🪛🔩
I really enjoy your videos Mike

Mammoth effort mike, you’ll get it sorted after a break from it.
VW Engine, built for Eternity!
Mike, It`s A life well-done-great sound 🛠👍🏻👍🏻😊go and drive the Bug🇺🇸🍀. Greetings.Hubertus🙏🏻👍🏻🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🍀🇺🇸

Blow air across the end of the hose at the pump to create a vacuum and pull fuel to the pump.

Nice one Mike post more for the UK :)

Fill the carb bowl thru the vent to get it started and primed.

yea it was because of where my hands were. the focus was trying to focus on the movement.
great video my friend, wondering why that gas is so orange
Everyone says take the fuel filter out of the engine bay however every beetle I’ve seen has one in the engine bay.

Don't recall what happend to the 30hp motor.

In AVAILABLE SUNDAYS AND MONDAYS 😊

i am sorry for laughting when the engine lid came down on your head xD
i would have flipped
yea that was about the 10th time. I already flipped. ha ha.
@@Mikefngaragereally not a great design, makes sense why they changed it!

I think I went to 130~ on a 1600 w/a # drill set, yours probably would like a 125~
If you go too big solder 'em up & re-drill... I like to scratch in the size for the next guy~
I’m hearing that you shouldn’t put the filter on the output side of the pump. You have unfiltered gas going into the pump.
old cars have them before or after the pump mostly in early years of most makes and models they are near the carb after the mechanical pump.
Aren’t those 55’ only tail lights
Some "bugs" to sort out it seems.
Where is your t-shirt from?
Low compresión.
Sounds like it's starving for fuel
$2 dollar fuel filter deciding fate of my engine? Nah....
