  • In this video we travel 1.5 hours away from home to pick up a 1995 BMW 318i for $600. the car has a clean title, 190k on the odometer, and some mechanical issues. I attempt to perform a temporary patch for its blown head gasket to limp the car back home (or overheat and possibly blow-up the engine). Join me as I highlight all the good and bad aspects of the vehicle and justify why I think this BMW E36 has the potential to be a budget friendly project car...after we get it roadworthy :). I'm bummed to get rid of the BMW 318ti chassis, but excited that I have a cleaner car to start a new project with. Cheers!

Dude... You can get a better shell than that for sure. That car belongs in the junkyard. Drive south until you get to an area without much snow and a "rust issue" will just be bubbling on one fender, worst case scenario a small hole. You'll run into the issue that you try to replace a panel, but then realize the thing it gets welded to is also rust, and you keep having to recreate the structure of the body to even be able to do the repair. At least the interior is nice so you can buy a gutted car and transfer it over.

Lol find me a shell that would cost the same Including the transportation fees to haul it back. Ill buy it 😂

@@Pawinning You're right they might not be that cheap but a neglected e36 with a decent body is typically only around 1000-1200 around here. I actually found a 328i auto with a bent rear control arm but no rust and in avus blue for $750. To me, not having to replace huge sections of metal is worth the extra money, but whatever floats your boat. Good luck man, wasn't trying to be a dick.

Dude you dont know a shit.. Come here in finland and i show you how rust cars are here and how easy it is to weld new sheet metal to make car like new.
Or just come here to see what kind of cars is a junkyard stuff.
This car in this vid is like a perfect condition e36 with small issues,
You guys dont know a shit how to fix car in my opinion with comments like that. 😂😂😂

@@Jubr123 I know how to fix rust I'd just rather not if a few hours driving south will get me one with basically no rust. I have 2 90s BMWs that haven't needed a single rust repair in my garage right now.

    • @Jubr123
      @Jubr123 5 років тому

ZachicusMaximus I dont fully believe you cause of your previous comment.. 😁
You know that these older bmw’s are not cheap anymore in mint condition? If you can find one from seller who does not know what he is selling, is very rare.
In here, the mint condition e36’s prices start at 4k up to 7k if coupe and 2,5 or 2,8 engine.
Beated up, fully rusted ones you get from 500 to 2k price range..
If you have rust free old bmw’s be glad, cause you can make a good money from them.
I got 4 e36’s right now, and none of them are rust free, there is no old rust free car in here though.. I got good ones but not even close to mint. They have been dirt cheap too. The ”newest” -97 323i was 700€ and it has minor surface rust spots on rear fenders and doors, nothing you cant fix easily.
If i would bought rust free same car, it would be atleast 3k in sedan body, lol..
And the car is not build, if you buy finished body and build a motor in it etc..
The money is the thing bro, and that you dont waste it to old car what you can fix cheap and get gains of value while doing that.
Clearly seems your one those peeps who thinks you can get everything with money. You dont get skillzz with money, haha

Just finished rust repairs on my e36. Would suggest replacing as much of the body as possible, instead of patching it up - like the rockers and wheelarches, otherwise it will take a looong time and the result will be far worse. Anyways good luck.

Thanks man! Did you have to brace your chassis if/when you cut out your rocker panels? I saw one guy on the forums who just set the car on ramps and then made a straight cut along the rocker skin. Idk where to find new jack supports but I could just custom fab some

I bought my e36 98 328i with supposedly had a massive overheating problem. Previous owner determined it was bad HG since it had 190k miles. Got it to run but got stranded as i over heated about a mile down the road. Parked it on the street 30 miles from home till i could get back to it. Couple days later I was ready to replace the HG on the side of the road, but decided to do a coolant flush and bleed it properly. NO MORE overheating and runs stronger than expected. All for a few hundred bucks...

Man, that was an enjoyable vid but... I'd part it out if I were you. Getting it for $600 and selling the stuff which is still good (interior and some of the body panels, like doors, trunk, possibly gearbox and what not?) should give you your money back and possibly a tiny cash windfall. Rather get a clean rust-free example and work it from there, unless you really like the challenge. :)

Living in the deep south, its interesting to see where the e36s rust since down here ... they don’t (unless subjected to salt water). You really should consider a southern road trip to pick up a a solid e36. Down here, the clear coat peels off, they get dented up, the interiors get trashed, but you wouldn’t have all that body rot to deal with. Good luck with your project!
