  • In the first of a series of short movies about Frida Escobedo, the Mexican architect describes how she fell into the profession and why she's never worked for anybody else.
    Speaking exclusively to Dezeen in London the architect, who in 2018 became the youngest person to design the prestigious Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, explains that she chose her profession for unexpected reasons.

      Hi Zezuru, [im sending you the same message as for the person below as encouragement] Im an architect and would like to encourage you to push through and finish your studies. The universities are very different than real life. You are ultimately the person who is going to choose what sort of work / life balance you will have in the end of the day. It is not that architecture is a bad decision - it is the person choosing to slave away for hours and not have balance in their life that causes the profession to have a bad reputation. When you finish your studies, work for 2/3 years at a company and start your own practice. It is much better and you can choose your projects and your own hours ! If you need any further guidance please feel free to email me at www.hollowayandhound.com for advice. But architecture can be a great profession if you have a mentor.

      It was worse after school, in my experience. It was worse because of politics. People are backstabbing each other. At least in school people had some sense of camaraderie.
      But that was my experience. Not sure if other people also go through this.

    I really needed to hear this. I as well, never thought I would enroll architecture and now I'm struggling, I wasn't sure if I still want to pursue my architectural degree. Although I kinda like the idea of planning and designing for the comfort of the people while considering the different aspects that maybe affected.
    I'm having doubts as I think I am not good enough. I always design buildings and spaces with a simple form unlike my other classmates who have this weird or crazy, out of this world concepts of buildings (which is also really great, but I'm just not like that when it comes to planning and designing), sometimes, I gave more importance on the functionality of the space rather than just aesthetically pleasing but did not maximize the use of that space but thank you for inspiring me😊

      I have the same problem too! Actually yesterday was my 6th semester's submission and days before i feel absolutely horrible? Because it seems everyone is doing better than me. I finally talked it out to a friend of mine and she's basically thinking the same thing too! Even the ones that we think are super awesome in design arent really confident in themselves so just push through, i think it gets better once we graduate

    • @keebs500
      @keebs500 Рік тому

      A couple of things: It is good you don't think you are good enough. This will propel you to always keep trying to exceed what you did previously. I have had those sentiments before. And if your classmates have wild designs compared to your simple forms, then that's ok too. They will be out of work, and you will be busy because builders & developers consider the numbers when doing a project- They look for practicality. At some point you will have a client that lets you do whatever you want and so you can experiment w/ your ideas then. In the future, remember that you should become your own developer so you can build exactly what you envisioned and then sell it and reap all the financial benefits. I have attached a link here to a house that I was given creative control over after years of doing boring practice work. Stay the course....it is worth it. Remember...architecture is an old man's / woman's game. You will become 'great' right before you die of old age. 😂 Enjoy

      I know that feel Charis 😂. Don’t worry, like Daleen said keep on going. I think the reward of being able to think a problem through and have a tangible object that improves many strangers’ lives on a daily basis is worth it. But you’ll only know what I mean after you have your first building go up and after you’ve had a bit of sleep and some time to be yourself on a consistent basis. This doesn’t happen in architecture school but you will get through and experience it on the other side. Stay strong 💪🏻

      O and those insane deadlines, you’ll find them useful when you need to produce good work with depth, quickly while working. That’s not to say the pressure is the same but rather that your creative muscles will be strong enough to reach your goals in a relatively short time.

    A short but somehow lovely interview. We also had to make that choice at 17, and I chose languages and art over mathematics (the latter is prerequisite to studying architecture in my country). Now as a closet architect I can only design and build through music and sound. It's fascinating but not really addressing any practical issues... * sigh *
