  • Outback's 342CG a wheelchair accessible travel trailer being mass produced by Keystone RV. The floor plan has been awarded for its innovative design. Industry magazines RV Pro and RV News have recognized the Outback 342CG as one of 2021's best new models.
Outback is Keystone's luxury travel trailer, and now they've taken comfort a step further for individuals who need more space to move around inside the RV. The design is made to be more wheelchair friendly and continue to appeal current buyers who need versatile garage space.
Initially concepted as a toy hauler floor plan, this model has a 56" wide extended ramp door which was natural point of ingress and egress for campers who use a wheelchair.
Keystone’s Outback team is taking the company’s “Live It Out” mantra seriously by designing a travel trailer to help campers who have physical disabilities get (or stay) out on the road.

I would like the tour to be given by someone who is actually wheelchair bound. Right off the bat I can see a very narrow entry way between the TV and the sink. Maneuvering in and around the bathroom looks like a nightmare. Finally, there is no way a wheelchair user can even come close to getting into that master bedroom. A VALIANT EFFORT THOUGH!

@@KeystoneRVCompany I think you should also work with a permanently disabled person. You don't have to do a lot of things at once just be simplistic and functional with a little extra luxury. My wheelchair is about 38 inches wide maybe a little bit more also you need to make sure you have enough space for a Hoyer lift to lift the person from their wheelchair and into the bed it needs to be an open bed underneath I understand a travel trailer is only so big but just reconfigure it and you'll get it easily I know you guys can do it I have faith in you

My husband is a Paraplegic. We full-time in a travel trailer (Starcraft Autumn Ridge 286KBS)and are always looking at new possibilities. We were super excited about the opportunity of a new travel trailer. However watching this with my husband this travel trailer seems 60% accessible. These are things my husband thought could use some work. Entrance from the entryway into the kitchen looks tight. There is no way he would be able to access that bathroom and close the door behind him. Taking a shower would be impossible. One thing that is important is that he should be able to make a full 360° turn in every area and every room. In the bedroom he would not be able to access his own clothes from cabinets or drawers. The bed also seemed dangerously high as he would have to be able to transfer in and out of bed from his wheelchair. My husband does everything in our current travel trailer without any assistance. He can make a full 360 degrees in entryway, kitchen, bathroom, and in front of bed. We absolutely love and appreciate that Keystone sees the needs of those in Wheelchairs and look forward to what they come up with in the future.

@@KeystoneRVCompany Why did you not start with someone with extreme needs? Then you would have made sure it worked for everyone else. Just the lip on the shower floor is uncomprehensible. And why not make it so that the person watching TV would be sitting facing the TV and beside their partner? I guess you can put a cushion on the arm rest but the the cup holder gets it hte way if you want to stretch your legs. Also, how about some space under the kitchen sink to allow the wheelchair user to wash their hands or food or whatever they need to wash? One last thing: make that table height adjustable. Not everyone has a lift on their wheelchair.

Navigating the bedroom is going to be tough for someone in a wheelchair, and an assumption that they'll be using the left side of the bed and that they will be able to extricate themselves from the recessed head/pillow area.. Bathroom access and functionality is lacking, period. Access from the ramp to the living space will not work. You need to map this out on your work bay floor and navigate it with a wheelchair before building them. Minimum clearance of 34" wide in all pass-thru areas, more than that to navigate around corners.

They definitely need to work disabled people with varying mobility issues and work out a better solution. It is definitely a nice set-up but it just will not work with a wheelchair I am not being over critical because they are so close to the right thing just a few more modifications and they got it

You can see it’s adapted from their bunk house and small toy hauler version of trailer. While not “perfect” their efforts at widening the interior doors gets them a B for effort, not a bad attempt at all. The bathroom needs a little more adapting to have better access, but otherwise it’d work! Given the total lack of lower/mid priced RV’s with this feature, this is awesome! Let’s hope they keep up the trend! Just think, in 2025 they’ll adapt a 5th Wheel Toy Hauler and call it wheelchair accessible, might be interesting!

You had my attention to the living room! The bathroom is anything but accesible! Winibago has a good barrier free design that Im sure is market available. The bedroom is also a deal breaker for most disability requirments. Over all you are entering into a small misunderstood market that could be very lucrative for you (Small right now). Your on the right track. By misunderstood I mean most able bodied people seldom ask for the advice from an ADA view or consider what accesiblity is! Working with an "Inter Abled couple" is great for their needs. I'm no expert on others requirments, I am on my own though. Again, good start but this should in know way be marketed as an wheelchair accesible RV until the bathing and sleeping areas are re designed.

Thank you for listening to your customer base. The wheelchair market is underrepresented. This is a good start. However, as a wheeler, I could not use the shower in this configuration. It also appears, I could only access the rear bedroom, ONLY when the slide is n the extended position. These 2 issues are mandatory for the wheelchair campers. I would also include some fold-down handrails on the ramp. Safety is very important. They have scissor handrails that fold flat and pop up when in use.

You need either a roll in shower or a bench seat in the shower. Lots of grab bars for both the shower and the toilet. Might want to go to a queen size bed so there is more room to maneuver around in the bedroom. It's a great start but could use a bit more work. I use a walker, and this would be perfectly fine for me with the exception of the bathroom, which needs the aforementioned shower seat and grab bars. I think it needs a bit more work for wheelchair folks, though. I cannot state how much I appreciate the fact that someone is working on making camping accessible. i haven't been able to camp in a few years and I miss it more than I can even begin to say.

I own a 2013 Outback 230RS because I saw the potential of this unit back then as it was more accessible for the disabled than any other on the market. I specifically purchased the unit because of the side ramp and garage/living area. This unit was initially a designed as a toy hauler. In my case I used the garage for my disabled daughters room. I carry my daughter to the living area. Wider doors a defiantly a step in the right direction. I can tell you a million reasons why the unit sucks for the disabled. I can also show you photos of trips taken with my family that were only made possible with this unit. I’m glad that Keystone has realized it’s potential as well. Some of the complaints are valid and I do not believe that this unit currently is at the level it could be in terms of completely accessible by a disabled person nor will it probably ever fully get there. But it’s headed in the right direction. Thank you Keystone.

    • @chetripley659
      @chetripley659 2 роки тому

I will say that right out of the gate the fireplace and tv needs to a few inches smaller and the outside corner needs to be rounded giving a few more valuable inches to someone in a wheelchair trying to enter the living area. I would do the same with the kitchen counter on the opposite side. A walk in shower is also a must if we are wanting to say everything in the unit is accessible. I think it would also be appreciated by people who just like the unit and don’t have a disability. When I shower in mine it’s like the scene from the movie elf (Will Ferrell in the shower). Hopefully the build quality has improved since 2013 but overall my unit has been amazing in terms of getting my daughter out into the world. If you are on the fence don’t be. Adapt and overcome, make it work for you. I could have complained about the unit not having this or that for the last nine years. Instead for the last nine years we have had some amazing adventures.

@@KeystoneRVCompany I just think renaming a toy hauler as accessible is is not entirely accurate. Yes the ramp is nice and grants access to the front. Try to push a wheelchair through that doorway into the living room and you will see what I mean. I use the garage as my daughters room but have to carry her into the living area. I am however extremely grateful to have a trailer that I can get her into. You are headed in the right direction and a few tweaks to the design may make me upgrade. I encourage you to get a wheelchair and go camp in it. I think you could sell a lot of these and help a lot of people along the way. Like I said, I have had 9 years with a disabled daughter in a unit similar to this. I know a thing or two. I spent months trying to find something that would make it possible to get her inside that wasn’t a conventional toy hauler. This unit has so much potential.

I am a member of the interabled community. I personally think that this trailer would be perfect for my husband and I. The auto leveling is a life saver! I love the ramp access into the trailer and storage for his scooter and the golf cart. The barn doors are a big plus...ingenious in fact! I don't know why there is a door that leads to the outside in the bedroom, but I would do away with that and add another wardrobe/chest of drawers/storage. The only thing I would add is an outside kitchen and solar panels on the roof (or offer as an option).

I have an older version of this trailer. I bought it for the space, white cabinets, and a room for my 2 Great Danes. They use the “toy room” as their space and can easily go in and out with the ramp, which is so much easier for older Danes to navigate than stairs. It’s my happy place and being able to have my 2 best buddies with me (and be so comfortable) is just perfect. I ❤️ this trailer and would recommend it to anyone. I’ve customized the interior and it was pretty simple. Wish the newer versions has the all white interior, as it’s so much brighter and cheerful. HI, this comment shows as Brandon BUT this is his Mom who is a wheelchair user. I was so excited to see this model after googling "wheelchair accessible" travel trailer. However, I do have a few comments. The unit is not a wheelchair accessible unit if you have any intention at all of staying in it. It is accessible for a chair to enter but to a wheelchair user who is bound to their chair 24/7 this unit does not work. I will tell you, it is a very nice unit with the ramp which as the salesman says, can be used for "toys" which I feel is the whole intention of the unit. The widening of the doors is a nice touch BUT the bathroom is not accessible to anyone that cannot get out of a chair so therefore the unit is not handicapped accessible. The unit can be accessed by wheelchair but once inside it is not equipped correctly. We currently have an Imagine with the walk- thru bath which is an amazing feature for anyone in a wheelchair. The bath is the width of the camper and my chair, which is a smaller chair can do a full circle. The toilet is beside the shower where I am capable of doing a "transfer" to the toilet and then to the shower without assistance. I am not "ditching" this unit I am just saying before you advertise a unit please make sure the unit is accessible in all aspects. Anyone that is in a wheelchair and loves camping would be more than excited to know there is a unit that is reasonably priced that is accessible and available to them! I would be more than happy to come to the factory or to the "drawing board" and help design a camper with "everyone" in mind. The camping world opens so many doors for someone with a disability from the young, to families with children with disabilities to the "young at heart" and to be the first in the market with one that works would be a great addition to the fleet of travel trailers.

Beautiful trailer but definitely need a roll in shower or a built-in bench seat for it, The doors might be nice and wide but you had to squeeze beside the bed that's not enough room for a wheelchair to get by. My opinion bigger then normal bathroom and bedroom space so we can get in and out comfortably and dont have super deep sinks because it makes it harder for wheelchair users to do dishes because the counters are already pretty high for us. The ramp is a beautiful idea and the barn door is something all trailer should have it leaves amazing space.

As a wheelchair user myself I would have to say that I like the thought of this. However I believe a lot of things could be improved upon…
    1. The space in between the sink, and the tv and fireplace cabinet. The tv should be mounted on the wall, and it’s a bit too big, and so is the fireplace. (In my opinion I don’t like to be cold. So I wouldn’t personally be in a state or country when it’s cold. So I wouldn’t need a fireplace.)
    2. The bathroom is a little too small. I would make the entire bathroom a wet bath. So it’ll have all tiled floors, the drain in the middle of the bathroom. The sink wouldn’t have the cabinet underneath. I think it’s called a pedestal sink. And I would put grab bars in the shower and beside the toilet.
    3. In the bedroom I would probably be fine with a queen be. Mount the tv on the wall, either eliminate the dresser, or put it under the bed instead of the dog kennel. Put the kennel probably under the table/bed, or in the area where the the wheelchair ramp is.

My 2017 Outback 324CG developed a structural defect. While having dinner, we four adults were shocked, when the floor on the main slide-out dropped approximately 1.5", separating the floor from the outside wall. I took it into Camping World, to see if they will stand behind the Structure, and make the necessary repair to fix the problem, and am waiting for a reply. Before I make a negative statement, I would prefer that Keystone Stand behind the structure and repair the slide-out. Other then that, we have loved our Keystone Outback 324CG Toy Hauler.

Haven’t seen anyone else mention this, so figure I’d chime in for when you design the Crip Carrier 2.0. 😉 Sinks should be wall-mounted, not built in to the countertop. That way there’s space for our legs to go underneath when we pull up to wash. The sink next to the stove _might_ be useable if you parallel part in front of it-the bathroom one not so much!

I have not gone through all the comments but I see alot that pretty much say how I feel. Just because a wheelchair can fit into one area does not make it wheelchair friendly or even usable by any means. 1st I would say when designing anything "wheelchair friendly" have someone who is in a chair full time help or atleast get true feedback on what will work and won't. When I say full time I mean they can not get up out of it to get anywhere. 100% dependent. Then it still works for people who are not 100% dependent as well. If you need people to run ideas by there is no shortage of them just ask and we will gladly help. Anything to help make something like camping enjoyable and comfortable again.

I love this floor plan. I wish there was an option to turn the ramp.into a patio. I would live there! If it was an option people in WCs wouldn't have to buy the rails, screens and doors but they would be available for those of us who'd like them.

Also, even though I don't use a wheelchair, the first thing I noticed is there are no handrails in the bathroom. How can you call any bathroom handicapped ♿️ accessible without handrails to assist in transfer from WC to toilet and from chair to shower (WHERE THERE WAS NO SEAT?) I haven't reas the other comments but I'm guessing yall got roasted for that bathroom and probably for having advertising a "handicapped" TT without a wheelchair user even in the vid. I mean use your big wig... whatever, but bring in some/an actual handicamper to do the vid with him.

So close to meeting our needs, but there is no way my husband would get his wheelchair into that bathroom and be able to use it. The master isn't accessible at all, and adding a drop leaf or something to the end of the table to add some length would be amazing so a wheelchair user could eat at the table without running into the legs of people sitting at the table. Adding wider doorways isn't the only thing that makes something accessible. Wheelchairs need space to turn around.

A nice attempt was made. As a wheelchair user it is nice to see a partially accessible camper trailer. I say partially because the shower isn’t going to be easily accessible for wheelchair user. I cannot stand in the shower. The bedroom is pretty narrow so only way for me to get in would be at the doorway then crawl across the bed. The fridge is mounted pretty high off the floor. Wouldn’t be easy to access the freezer. The ramp looked like it was a manual ramp. Not sure if it’s powered since wasn’t mentioned in video, but would be nice if it was powered. Does the ramp stay down all the time or does it have to be closed when not in use? Didn’t see a door or anything in the back to close off the area so ramp looks like it has to be opened and closed. The auto closing screen door on the steps is neat, but with the ramp open you’ll get more bugs in. Outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen would be nice. At least a wheelchair user could safely shower outside. The one touch leveling system is cool, maybe mount it lower or on a remote so wheelchair user can operate.

Not wheelchair accessible at all. The wheelchair can't even get into the main bedroom. Could have sacrificed a lot of the living room / kitchen area to make the bathroom and bedroom functional. Did anyone disabled in a wheelchair consult your design team considering it's being marketed as "The First Wheelchair Accessible Travel Trailer"? I've been in a wheelchair for 25 years. How can this floor plan be Award-winning? The number ONE reason disabled families don't / can't go camping is bed access & toileting. The mark was missed ☹

Well in the hauler part on the lower side hide 2 30 pound tanks one each side and the center area front loading for a gen set and then you stop all the stealing from rv sites on the tanks and created a space to have a centered genset or extra batteries to go off grid would be great so a true drop down from toyhauler fifthwheel to travel trailer toy hauler just saying and the solar panel connects inside hauler then that would be less moving of outside panels to get stolen and or damaged but now they can be mounted on the roof safely and everyone is happy

  • @stephenrice4208

    1. The ramp is nice - it works great for accessibility and as a utility ramp but it would be better if the ramp could be set up as an outdoor patio with guardrails/handrails and a smaller unfold-able HC RAMP for an accessibility ramp wide enough for use in the patio setup - with exterior utility doors wide enough for even a golf cart and to also isolate the patio from the interior when in patio configuration.
    2. A set in the shower should be a requirement
    3. The table is great but drawer access to the storage under the dining seats should be an obvious HC accessibility design feature.
It’s a small but nice trailer but it would be nicer for mobility impaired if they could get outside at the same level once they are at the trailer floor level without always needing to go down a ramp.

It looks great for our large family, but wheelchair accessibility negated almost immediately upon entrance into the main cabin. The wheelchair collides directly head-on with the sink. With the tv wall on right, it is really not possible to do sharp 90 degree turn to continue on into the cabin. Secondly, the toilet may be accessible but there is no way to get up at small sink. Finally, the shower is impossible for non-standing person to get in to the left and past sliding doors to small shower

Nice setup but you put in a step-in shower with a 4-inch step... you should have had the roll-in shower and toilet on the end of the caravan. Then the main bedroom with the kitchen and lounge room as the other end. Then over the main bed have a ceiling hoist or a swinging arm floor hoist so those who are unable to transfer can use it to get into bed and also onto a commode chair which can be tied down over the toilet when traveling. If you are wanting to seriously cover all the bases with what you are doing then seriously hire someone who has a muscle-wasting disease because if you cater to them it caters to everyone in a wheelchair. Better yet let me know if ya keen and I'll draw you out a floor plan as for payment for my ideas i'll settle for a wheelchair-accessible travel trailer.

From the perspective of a T-12 paraplegic confined to a wheelchair: This is a good start, but I see LOT of things in this design that are immediately a problem. It's also apparent that no one who is actually in a wheelchair had any input on the design. The bedroom is totally inaccessible. That microwave and all those overhead cabinets? Totally unreachable. That regrigerator is high as hell...and why put that vent thing on the bottom instead of the top? You could've EASILY made that reefer a foot and a half lower, but you didn't. Why? Shower is totally worthless. You could've used all that "storage space" in the front to make a shower/bathroom that is ACTUALLY accessible. I give it D+.

The bedroom isn’t accessible at all and either is the bathroom, and how does someone in a wheelchair reach the microwave and top of the fridge. You need to move the bed and allow access down both sides, the bathroom needs to be bigger with a full wet room to allow access to the shower from a commode and room around a toilet for a commode to go over. You could do lower fridge or fridge draws that can be accessed.
The front on the van is great to get in but getting from that part into the rest I’m not sure there is enough room to get passed the bench.
I highly recommend speaking to a occupational therapist who deals with wheelchairs and there users to come up with a better plan that would suit all wheelchair users. You have to remember there is a lot of difference between one user to the next, they all have different capabilities .
The bed would not be able to be accessed for a transfer from wheelchair to bed at all, definitely no room there.
    Great start though.

I am wheelchair bound and I can see a couple problems right off the bat. And a wheelchair bound person like me is not getting in that so called bedroom. There is zero room for transfers everywhere. Not to mention we aren’t getting to use that bathroom either. This camper is not ADA accessible.

Hello Michele, We're learning a lot about different kinds of accessibility needs as we've worked on this project and, while this model will be more accessible for some, we know that it won’t be what every camper needs. Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback, we appreciate it!

Good that it has a ramp and all, but it's a 38 foot travel trailer. My truck is 22 feet long. A Ford F-250 is twenty feet long. Put this monstrosity on the bumper and good luck towing 60 feet of mass through town.. This thing is longer than a 40 foot fifth wheel. Forget getting it into a campground..

The tight turn coming from the bunk room into the main living space would be impossible for me to navigate with my power chair. Why didn’t you make the kitchen be a pop out so entering that area one could come straight through, or put the door on the other side of the TV/Fireplace. Did a person in a wheelchair actually try to maneuver through this unit? And how big was that person? My grandmother was a tiny lady and had a small wheelchair but most of us now use much larger ones.
The bathroom is a travesty of design! I like the sliding door idea but swap the toilet/sink with the shower so the user can get their chair into the bathroom and close the door! The shower needs to be a roll in shower too, with a fold down shower chair built into the side. Also the toilet needs to be taller for people to be able to transfer onto without falling. And where were the grab bars in the bathroom?
The bedroom was completely unusable by a wheelchair unless they are quite ambulatory. Personally i would be forced to use the bed that converts out of the table. I’m that case, do away with the bedroom in the back entirely and place the bathroom back there! It would give the wheelchair user much more room. Then you could also slide the kitchen down away from the entrance so the turn wouldn’t be so tight to come in.
Also, in the bunk room, couldn’t the bottom bunk bed be a full or Queen that folded up? It would sleep more people without taking up anymore room. Feel free to contact me if you need an ADA consultant.

We worked with an interabled couple to develop this floor plan. We hope it helps create a way for more folks to be able to get out and go camping. We do realize it won't be the answer for everyone, but we are trying to take steps in the right direction to have a more inclusive design process where we can. Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it!

I went with my wheelchair bound husband today to see this in person at camping world. I was super disappointed, the pitch of this ramp is nowhere close to being used independently by a person in a wheelchair and as a caregiver, the grade was far too difficult for me. Once inside the bathroom and master bed access is nowhere close to being functional for a full time wheelchair user.
Y’all didn’t consult a Single person in a wheelchair on this design. I have ideas I am willing to share.

Impossible to get something out from the fridge sitting down.. and the bathroom is really lacking.. no space for the wheelchair - no one wants to go on the toilet with an open door.. the bed could be lower too..

Nice try. Glad to see you making an attempt, but maybe you should look to your competitors who have done this successfully for a while before reinventing the wheel. For the next revision create a committee of full time wheelchair users with varying levels of disability from those who self transfer all the way to people with quadriplegia who will test your prototype before you put it to market. You need to consult with people in both manual and powered chairs and should have a 32-36" rollway at all times without using any slide outs. As someone else mentioned, make a mock layout in the manufacturing area with the measurements and furniture and have real wheelchair users conduct test navigation.
The corner space to enter the main part of the RV from the ramp looks very tight and doesn't seem to allow for any steering error by a power chair. For the bedroom, how in the world is a wheelchair user supposed to get in there???? You left zero space for someone to transfer and gave no consideration for those who may require a patient lift/hoist to get in and out of bed. You also make a very able bodied assumption that every person in a wheelchair could use the side of the bed closest to the door. In terms of a patient lift/hoist, create a bedframe that has a clear area under the bed, so a freestanding patient lift could be used or build the frame to accommodate a ceiling lift option. The shower would be fine for someone who can step up into it, but that is more likely to be someone who uses a scooter to combat fatigue or a parent taking care of a child than a full time wheelchair user.
For a truly successful product for this market, you MUST have direct consultation and interaction with actual wheelchair users and their caregivers as part of your R&D and product testing.

If you kept it simple and removed all the luxuries, it would greatly improve accessibility.
Most of us just want to be able to enjoy the outdoors with basic needs not a mobile hotel suite.

If in a wheel chair you cannot get to the bed nor able to use the shower. Before taking a product to market, let someone actually use it for a couple days!

As someone in a wheelchair this RV is nice, but it’s NOT fully wheelchair accessible. As in the shower, the walkway through the kitchen/doorway, and the microwave being so high.

Im wheelchair user and I can tell you that trailer is "accessible", but pretty horrible since toilet is pretty much impossible to use (Not for everybody ofcourse) and as you mentioned it has a "step in" shower. Space between the bed and door, is way too narrow to get in. Kudos for trying tho.
