Hi Nancy, My new torch is coming next week. Loooved your video, and it will be quite useful when I set up the torch outfit. I watched a guy trip by getting his foot in a loop of his torch hose which resulted in breaking the hose off the tank!!!! Luckily it wasn't lit and he got the gas turned off. He was teaching a class a the time. I've watched several of your videos and love them all. Lots more interesting than Rio Grande videos. It's the humor.

Excellent vid Nancy. Most of my life has consisted of working in the nuclear facility maintenance area. Dealing with combustible gases constantly. Short of getting very technical, I believe you have done an excellent job describing the basic transportation and usage of your specific combustible (and very dangerous) compressed fuel. Never too safe.Keep it up..... Love your beard/mustache, nice touch...
So so so Important, these life preserving tips at the beginning of the video. Anyone should listen to this. I know of a similar experience. Great tip on not using the white PTFE plumbers tape.
Great video, especially the safety information. As you mentioned, gas cylinders should always be chained to keep them from falling as that could knock off the valve and turn the cylinder into a rocket. The cylinder should be secured against something use two chains (as you show) but the chains should be tight enough to keep the bottom chain about 1/3 the way from the floor and top chain 1/3 the way from the top of the cylinder. In your written instructions on how to use an acetylene torch you gave a list of things to check before lighting the torch: "Wait: no long, dangly sleeves, long hair tied up, protective glasses, cats cleared out of the area? Of course! Close-toed shoes? Check. Ventilation in place? Check, check. Fire retardant/proof surface in place? Yup. All flammables removed from the area? Yes mother. Okay, GO! Light that torch!" One other item I would add to that list is to make sure that you always have an ABC fire extinguisher readily available whenever you use a torch. You will be unhappy if you ever need one and it is not there.

Hey Nancy, i love your videos,im building a silver Smith/lapidary studio so your videos are a lot of help. One warning , i was using a similar soap to what your using (pure glycerin) and after a few years of using it I finally got a squeeze full into my left eye. I washed it out right away but still my eye was still damaged. I'm a holistic nut but I found out that natural soaps aren't PH adjusted and they can burn the eyes. Be safe my beautiful lady ♡ . Thank you solder Girl. I just got my first (large) torch, a Preto-O-Lite Acetalyne Air torch. It came with a single valve and not one with the pressure gauge as well. I wonder after seeing this if I should get another valve. Thank you for a great video!

Be careful with some soaps they contain oxidizing chemicals that can damage gas components, plain old joy dish soap and water contains no harmful agents to brass or copper components. This is what I use for surgery center gases to check for leaks. also never lay an acetylene tank on its side you run the risk of the acetone entering your torch system, let stand up rite for a while before use.

This is super helpful, Nancy, as always! I do love the silly little entertaining things you do, also ;-) I actually don't think your chain setup would hold up in an earthquake, though; has it? I think the chains are likely a little too loose, especially the bottom one, and I think I'd at least double them. I also wouldn't leave a tank standing all by its lonesome anywhere, like it looks like you may have done with the leaking one outside. If it falls over, the stem could be damaged and obviously make everything go boom - a little lesson from my scuba diving days ;-) Which brings me to my question. Do you think it would be OK to keep the tank(s) in a tall plastic bin, with *that* chained to a table leg, and ideally (hopefully) chain them up closer to where I'm going to solder (on the stove) when I actually use the torch? I don't have anywhere I can really leave them set up, at least at the moment, and frankly, I don't want them to be screaming "Look at me!" if my landlord comes in here, so keeping them as disguised as possible, and at least marginally covered, even if only with a dishtowel, would be my preference. I now live in Pennsylvania, and while we do indeed occasionally have an earthquake, they are far from the same problem they are in CA. And can you use a #3 Smith Little Torch tip on an acetylene/air setup like yours?
I had a leak and only realized it when I got it home and tested it. For my next tank, I'm going to take my soapy water with me and save me a return trip.
Hi Nancy, my torch even when tightening all the way will only give me pressure up to 7 instead of 10. I checked for leaks and don't see any. Now I'm scared to use it. Any ideas?
That is correct, no Teflon tape or pipe dope (the goop). These are compression joints, their ground for a precise fit when the nut is tightened, tape can tear off and get trapped in the regulator valve seats causing "creep". This is where you set it to 5 psi and say a 1/2 hour later you look and it has gone up to 15.
omg never burn bleed! burn bleed increases chances of flashback. all you do is turn off the valve, then open your handheld piece and bleed the line. NO FLAME.
Next time you are at the hardware store, ask for a black pipe nipple, size- 1/2" x 6" or 8". Cost, abt a buck... You may slip this over your acetylene valve wrench and it will be easier for you to turn it on, and assure you are shutting it off well. :-) it will be called a cheater! Tnx for the nice vid!

I see nothing stopping that tank from falling through the legs of your counter. Still not secured.
Re-watched as I am ready to set propane oxygen system...like the eyelet chain system..cheaper to do..the torch caddies are expensive
