If he's from his imagination, where would enough self-awareness raise up to get your own imagination to tell you that you are imagining them? That's bad/creative writing, he should have faced the reality in isolation, it wouldn't have been a Kessler line to tell him, maybe after the realization then the actor could have given him a wink or something.
