A modern day Mozart, and that's absolutely not an exaggeration. If you look into a lot of the live master classes and music composition vids he has out, you'll understand what i mean. Another great song for a reaction for him though is All Night Long with Take 6.
Listen to “Hideaway”, it was one of his first highly recognized compositions. He has won several Grammys within the last few years I believe, a truly inspiring individual.
He listened to Take 6 as a young child and you can hear their harmonizations in his work...but, his master classes are where is brilliance shines... his involvement with the audience...his pure joy!!!
That's nice to say but anyone who's the someone of something isn't usually that thing in a technical sense. Beethoven is someone for a completely original reason, this is a re-interpretation, a pleasant one but Beethoven he is NOT.
Almost as much as I love Jacob Collier I like seeing the reactions of people who see his genius the first time! He brings people to tears. Watch everything he does!
He did all of this himself. All of the voices you hear are just Jacob. He did this long before the pandemic and zoom meetings. He is just brilliant. Things we started doing in 2020 Jacob was doing in 2016/17.
This type of video, where 1 person sings all parts & arrays several versions of himself over the screen, has been around for a long time. Jacob took it to another level. Perhaps the most amazing thing is that he was originally known as an instrumentalist, first on piano, but he can play just about any instrument. He's a musical genius.
Jacob is the Mozart of his generation! He has perfect pitch so he articulates 1/4 tones! He is humble and pays homage at the beginning to his idols like Quincy, Herbie Hancock, Take Six etc. Jacob won a Grammy for this to add to his other four! Listen to his early work Stevie Wonder!
5:45 the best thing is that he hadn't done this during quarantine but in 2017, so it's not a „covid project” , it's just Jacob Collier and his genius!!!
The reason he sounds like an arcapella singer and right on the note is because he has perfect pitch down to the microtone, he also harmonises perfectly in the harmonic series in this song since he isn't bound by the slightly skew tuning that makes a piano work. It just sounds right in a way that few songs do
You really got to do more on Jacob, he can transport you to a different dimension in another universe, go through his musical journey from the oldest to the newest you won't be disappointed.
Jacob recorded over 8000 vocal tracks for this piece without auto tune and nothing pre written . This is just the tip of a gigantic iceberg of the amazing talent of Jacob Collier. The only person that can out to him is himself. He also produced the video by the way
He definitely edited the pitch in some vocals. That's not to take away from his genius, he'll admit this himself. He might pitch a vocal up or down a few cents if he thinks it's slightly out of tune.
@@silashannesarson5934 Have you watched the videos where he's singing free form explaining modes and later on somebody charts them and follows him with a piano and he's note for note perfect. So personally I doubt it that he pitches up or down even a percent or so. Except with the possibility of bass notes.just my opinion
Jacob is part of a welcome wave of musicians and artists reimagining old favourites such as Moon River and how music is done nowadays. He is a multi Grammy and BAFTA winner. Truly a musical wunderkind. his streams during the pandemic were crucial to me and I'm sure lots of other people who missed live music so much. Thank you for playing this. Jacob never fails to cheer me.
Ok… about the intro… Jacob sent an email to approximately 50-100 musician friends asking them to send back a file of them singing the word “Moon”… among them Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock and the the late David Crosby. JC then took the returned files and arranged them in Logic and what you see is the end result of more meticulous work by Jacob. Jacob Collier is a multi-grammy award winning composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist/producer/genius. Every tune you see of his will have a similar effect. Check out the video he made that got Quincy Jones’ attention: JC’s cover of “Don’t You Worry ‘bout a Thing”.
A wonderful reaction, thanks. Please do react to more Jacob. Jacob was first discovered by the amazing UA-cam videos he put out as a teenager. People who understood what he was doing were blown away. The opening scene in "Moon River" contains friends who he contacted and asked to send him them singing-I think-a C. There are many well known musicians in that opening including Herbie Hancock, Steve Vai, Chris Martin, Quincy Jones, Graham Nash, his Mom (a respected classical violinist and conductor) you get the idea. The arc of Jacob's music is constantly evolving as he evolves but whatever he ends up doing could only have been done by him. I noticed a couple of other commenters mention "All Night Long" and I would also heartily recommend that as well worthy of a reaction. It too is epic-though in an entirely different way-it never fails to put a smile on my face and it would be a delight to see you do a reaction to that. Thanks again for this quality, thoughtful effort.
This would get an A+ in the Inter-Galactic Music Conservatory for Gods, if such an institution existed, or a Grammy - which it did. Now admittedly, I don't know most of the people in the opening, but some of them are: Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Hans Zimmer, Steve Vai, Chris Martin (Coldplay), David Crosby, Suzie Collier (his mother). They weren't "sent" to this project. They are actually in his close circle - he just asked them and they were more than happy to take part.
Just found your content man (via the Lingus reaction). Great personality for reactions! And, importantly, a great mic! Would love to see you check out Jacob's stuff from Djesse 3, including "Time Alone with You" with Daniel Caesar, "All I Need" with Mahalia and Ty Dolla Sign, "In too Deep" with Kiana Lede, and "Running Outta Love" with Tori Kelly. The whole album really is absolutely killing.
You simply can't recognize the pure genius of this one if a kind masterpiece, you're like miles away. A school project? This dude has won a Grammy for this ^^ He brings harmonies I haven't heard in my entire life after about 10 years of professional singing and you sit there well that's nice... don't know what to say or express how disappointed I am from this reaction...
"Is he an a-cappella singer? Let me know in the comments" Jacob, shredding piano, bass, wind instruments and inventing new stuff for Yamaha: "Well, yes"
The opening “Moons” were all submitted by his friends ranging from Steve Vai to Quincy Jones to his own Mom. Once the song starts it’s 5,000 separate tracks of Jacob harmonizing with himself. There are some negative harmonies and serious music theory genius going on. It’s a masterpiece. The only note that isn’t him is one high C from his sister. The Logic Session breakdown of him recording this is epic too as he explains the entire thing. Check out his insane playing capabilities too. Try All Of My Heart Live In Toronto on for size. I was there. It was bonkers!!!
Jacob Collier is the most musically exciting person around. The colour he brings to his arrangements is incredible some of his early stuff is also worth listening to for me the piece I like the road not taken.
Jacob is the first one. I also noticed Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Cory Henry, JoJo, Tank, Tori Kelly, Claude McKnight, Charlie Puth, Avery Wilson, Hans Zimmer, and Ty Dolla $ign.
If this was a school project he gets an A+. LOL That was a great line. Jacob teaches MASTER classes at world renowned music schools like Berkeley. Its always great to see people discovering this musical genius of our century.
There is a 90+ minute video where he explains the logic session for the creation of this video.... its almost as astounding as the song itself. There is also a transcription one that shows the ridiculous chord structures and shifting pitch centers he uses throughout. He's definitely a musical genius.
Some great explainer vids also, about his use of microtones and other weird harmony stuff - fascinating even to the only-slightly-musically-knowledgeable 🥰
"I don't know if this was like...for school or something...." LOLOL That response made me fall off my chair laughing hysterically because 1) Jacob does look like a high school student and....2) No "student" in the entire world has the musical chops to conceive and execute a vocal arrangement of this quality.
