Rare Dawn 2 1/4” vice. Did I completely ruin it?

- I bought this hard to find 2 1/4” Dawn vice from a friend and once restoration started I found a crack in the sliding jaw. My first attempt at repairing it was a disaster that made it worse but I think I got a good result in the end. The sad part for me was my friend felt he had ripped me off which was not the case at all. Neither of us knew the crack was there and now it’s sorted. Thanks George.

Thx 4 ASMR sandblasting and yer wisdom. Collecting Dawn's IS a vice of mine - i had no idea about the faults that might be lurking there in my collection! Yer comments are always unique and insightful.
The Japanese call these faults and their correction with a mix of platinum, silver and gold: Kintsugi (Japanese: 金継ぎ, romanized: "golden joinery"). The accident becomes a feature- which U did consider I know. It's a Zen concept which sees the object as emblematic of the perfect imperfection of life itself!

Hi again Tom, thanks so much for your kind comments. The Groodle (Lucy) loves going to Bunnings at belco, her favourite isle is the pet food isle and she usually gets to pick a toy or a treat. Wow Stuart this is a fantastic video. Shame finding the crack but you are right No way your buddy could have known. I've never seen seams like those Dawn's have but then again I only have seen one in real life. 😁 Ajax? I'll have to give that a go. . I'm not one to paint vises very often but man those look like a couple of Hot Rods! Very nice!!! Seriously this is a fantastic video and I can't believe I have just now seen it! Take care Buddy. Nice job on the paint Stuart. You must put you camera in the blast cabinet, either that or you have the one and only blast cabinet with a perfectly clear window! You never did reveal where you sourced those nylon wheels😊

I am interested in seeing how your compressors are set up. I have one moderate size compressor and would like to spray paint as well as obtain a blast cabinet. Also I want to run a branch off the supply for one or two remote air hook-ups. Very nicely done restorations.

Always love your videos Stuart, and great fix on the 2 1/4, you must have had a couple of worrying moments there, but the finished result was awesome. Just out of curiosity, do you mind if I ask, on the 2 inch Dawnette, is there any reason why you didn't mirror finish the slide, I see it's painted, I'm not complaining, just curious. Hi Elliot, thanks so much for your support and kind comments. Yes, I was very disappointed when I saw the mess from the welding but was happy with the final result. With the Dawnette, it was just a personal preference. Dawn didn’t polish any parts on their vices, just the jaws, the top of the sliding jaw and T bar were left in bare metal so I polish some parts just to brighten them up. I’m not out to completely change them, just make them nicer to look at. Cheers mate, Stu.
Another great video Stu. Those vices came up superb. Without being a Dawn aficionado, I reckon your solution to the cracked slide issue is schmick as. Especially so since it is a decorative piece.
I started using the nylon wheels after watching one of your previous videos, & yeah, can vouch for their effectiveness.
Also, put me down for a sandblasting tutorial. I’ve been researching sandblasting CFM’s, FAD’s, litres per seconds etc etc and I’m still non better off. From what I’ve gathered so far….I think I need something rated around a FAD of 320 odd. A brand new comp with that sort of rating is around $1000. I mean, I’ve got brownie points with the missus and all, but not that much!!😂
And I’m reluctant with a second hand option without knowing exactly what’s a good rating to aim for air delivery wise etc.
Any assistance you provide would be most welcomed.

Hey Ian, how are you mate? Thanks for your kind comments. In regards to compressor size, it’s the old adage of the bigger the better and a quality unit is good because it’s going to be working hard. Don’t worry to much about free air delivery but more on cfm. A smaller nozzle size will help a lot and I’ll try to cover all that in a video.

As to the sand blasting . Yes please do a video . I personally know nothing . ( Wife keeps moaning about the little metal bits from the wire wheel I bring into the house ) so am seriously thinking about a different stripping method ... I need to know everything , compressor size ( can't do two) quality of sand blaster. Medium types and reuse , how many times can you use it ? Time it takes compared to wire wheel would be nice , any draw backs ? Hidden media deposits in threads etc. . This would give me the excuse to buy more equipment !! Thanks again for a great video !
No worries Jim, I’ll start working on a video but I have found air supply to be the biggest issue with sandblasting. You need good volume to be able to keep high pressure but I’m thinking there may be ways to help by reducing nozzle size. I’ll try to cover all the issue you have mentioned because they are things I have come across and I’m sure others will have the same questions.
I’ll also cover media contamination, water separation, dust extraction plus purchase and running costs.

Love the cameo appearance of the supervisor. How did you finish the lamination? Did it need milling in situ?
Hi Jon, yes we absolutely adore the supervisor (Lucy). With the lamination, I just trimmed it up with a cutting disc in the grinder and finished it with the belt sander on low speed. I just had to be careful to make sure neither the grinder or belt sander was trying to pull the lamination up and away from the base and watch the heat as heat will release the glue.
