54. The Blackball Line - Lyrics
1. In the Blackball Line I served my time,
To me way, hey, hoo ro yah!
In the Blackball Line I served my time,
Hurray, for the Blackball Line!
2. Oh those Blackball ships are good and true,
And they're the ships for me and you.
3. Oh I've sailed the line full many times,
Oh and that's the line where I wasted my prime.
4. If you wish to find a real gold mine.
You just take a trip on a Blackball ship.
5. You just take a trip to Liverpool,
Oh to Liverpool that packet school.
6. Many Yankee sailors you'll see there,
With their red-topped boots and short-cut hair.
7. Oh there's Liverpool Pat with his tarpaulin hat,
And there's old Jack Sprat, the packet rat.
8. Oh, I've seen the Line both rise and shine,
So I'll drink a health to the Blackball Line. - Розваги
If someone can sing shanties for a year, I can do my homework.
It's a hard tough life we wellermen undergo... :)
Do your homework. Then sing shanties!
Thanks so much for creating such an amazing archive of Sea Shanties.
Who knew something so incredible could come out of a pandemic.
Thank you very much Seán!
It really is my pleasure.
The Black Ball Line was the first to sail packet ships, on regular schedules. The line about “red-topped boots and short cut hair” refers specifically to the Black Ball sailors, who wore their hair short in an age when most sailors had long hair. They were issued red-topped boots to match the line’s red flag with a black circle (hence the name ‘Black Ball’).
Interestingly, a separate packet company went into business in Liverpool in 1857, using the same name and flag as the original, US based line. The original Black Ball Line outlasted the knock-off by around 7 years.
Hooray for the SOTW anniversary!!
Thanks for the history, Joe.
Congratulations for a whole year of shanties Sean!
Also, I think you'd be surprised on how many people would actually enjoy your retrospective video. I'd say you should just go for it
I'll try to post something of the sort.
Still listening to this daily, practicing singing on my commute. Thanks for this amd all of your uploads!
I’ve been here since the third week. Never missed a shanti since. Thank you so much for making UA-cam interesting
You're welcome!
Came for the sea shanties... Stayed for the mustache 😁
I guess I won't shave it, then!
@@SeanDagher NEVER
Hurray for the shanty of the week
Thanks 5.
Honestly Sean, I only recently discovered this series but it has been such a positive addition to my days. I've been running through it and re-listening to it over and over.
Not only are the shanties and videos just so quality and fantastic, but I'm always filled with positive vibes whenever I see how compassionate and positive your replies to comments are. You seem such a nice and caring man and it really shows in the kindness you put into your comments.
I understand sarcastic self-deprecating as that's basically my own style of go-to humor, but I will say if the captions you put in your videos about you talking to much are at all a feeling you seriously have about yourself, please know that myself (and from what I can tell, all the other viewers) seriously enjoy listening to your thoughts and explanations on the shanties just as much as the shanties their selves.
I fell in love with sea shanties years ago, like many, thanks to black flag. So when I realized those were done by you, I dove into the channel. But in the years since black flag, as much as I have loved listening to shanties, I've spent much of that time wondering and googling just what the heck most of the phrases in those shanties meant, with very little luck. Then this series comes along and you so efficiently explain and theorize on all of the things I've wondered over the years.
If ever you're feeling tired, or unsure of continuing the shanty of the week, or just thinking of whatever else sort of content you could produce that might be a bit easier; I can guarantee you that I would be happy to spend hours just listening to you talk to your heart's delight about shanty concepts and origins. I seriously would never tire of the types of lessons your sprinkled throughout the shanty of the week series, and I would absolutely adore a series just focused on you shooting the breeze on the topic of shanties, and I'm sure many others feel the same.
Just a thought I had, one I wanted to express, both in case it helps with lessening the work load of the content, and to express to you that your "rambling" is more loved than you surely could realize.
Hope all is well with you. And thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for introducing me to sea shanties and being such a big part of my musical life before I even knew who you were.
Hi Warren and thanks so much for your message. I don't actually fell bad about myself when the Red Text Guy slams me for this or that. Life does get busy sometimes but the SOTW is one of my great joys.
I'm glad that the videos have been able to answer some of your questions and that you have enjoyed the music. I plan to continue making them for a long time.
Have a good day.
Seán.
It's been a great year of shanties, thank you very much. Here's looking forward to another year of shanties.
Thanks Jarryth. I've enjoyed the year a lot. Lots more to come.
Excellent, my favorite shanty! Thank you for posting so many different versions, bless you, Mister Dagher.
Your favourite! I'm glad I finally got to it.
Congrats on a whole year of shanties!!! I count myself and everyone else so lucky to have been on this journey with you since the beginning. I couldn’t have asked for anything better than Shanty of the Week to get me through quarantine :)
That's nice to hear, Ava. I'm glad the music has been helpful.
Congratulations on one whole year of shanties! I honestly never get tired of listening to your collection, thank you for all your effort :)
Thanks Sabrina. I'm glad you like the music.
I wish I was born in the 70s...I would be a singer LOL,great singing Mr.Sean 🎶❤️
You can be a singer even if you're not born in the 70s.
@@SeanDagher I mean sure yes...like you! 🎶❤️Your an inspiration
Hurray for one year! 🥳 Thank you for bringing us these wonderful songs each week!
It really is my pleasure.
You've been a huge help! With inspiration from you, and with help of your explanations for some of the more technical vocabulary, I found the courage to translate some shanties. Than you so much!
I'm glad it has been helpful, jan. I'd be curious to hear some of your translations. Into which language do you do them?
Thanks a bunch for this one. The verse about Yankee Pat with his tarpolin hat is in "Across the Western Ocean" in my Hugill book. This is a fun one.
Yeah, that verse gets around. Jack Spratt the packet rat is in a bunch as well.
! Crow!! You need to recruit this friend into singing shanties, too, they don't seem to have the hang of it quite yet.
(I appreciate your year's worth of time and effort, too, of course, but there was a crow.)
That was a fantastic year (well almost, found you in October, I think) and I always look forward to this each week. I also share it with a few "naval enthusiasts". Around 100 flat I'd guess. Of course I dunno how many came by, but I keep recommending you. And I like how you always include info bits. More French shanties for year 2?
Hi Markus. Yes, I'll do more French ones. I'm glad you've stuck around and thanks for sharing the videos!
Cant believe its been a year already for you Sean! Id say you timed it just right!
1 year! Congrats on all the great songs over this past year and can't wait for more shanties!
Thanks JC. I'm glad you like the music. There is lots more to come.
Congrats and thank you very much! I have really enjoyed your gift of music. Thanks again!!
Thanks and you're welcome and I'm glad to hear that you have enjoyed the music.
Congratulations and thanks for the year of shanties Seán! I really like this one.
Thanks CVE. I'm glad you like this one.
Congratulations on one year! I’ve been here for most of it and I look forward to every one.
Thanks Alyssa. Lots more to come.
we definitely need the just the shanty version of this one
Oh, man. I've been too busy lately to put out any JTS videos, but I hope to have a few ready this week.
Hi Sean! Way back in Week 5 of SOTW you sang the song "Renzo," which includes the lines, "Now Renzo is the skipper/of a leaky Blackball clipper." Do you think this means that Renzo now works for the Blackball shipping line? Thanks for all your hard work putting these videos together and teaching us these great old songs.
Never heard this one before. Glad you introduced it to us!
I'm glad you like it. There are so many hidden gems.
Merci Sean! Didn't know this one. Beautiful as always!
Thanks JB. I'm glad you like it.
Happy anniversary! And thanks for an enjoyable year. I look forward to every week!
Thanks s. I'm glad you enjoy these. Lots more to come.
love you and your work Sean, I always look forward to a new shanty from you every week. :) You and you're beautifull mustache make times like these easier. Thank you.
Thanks CWAM. I hope you enjoy this one too.
Congrats on one whole year! Thanks for everything bro!
Thank you and you're welcome.
One of the things that I love about this series is that, in a lot of cases, your versions of these shanties are somewhat different from the versions I'm used to hearing.
Yeah, I learned a lot of them differently from some other people. but sometimes the forms and melodies evolve when you sing a song a lot, so even if you learned it the same as most other people.
no idea how i got here but it was worth it
Welcome aboard! New shanty every Tuesday.
I’ve enjoyed your channel so much, thank you!!
You are welcome. I am glad you have enjoyed it.
Please sing these also if you wish-
1 star of the county down
2 william taylor
3 i will fanthom the bowl
4 here's a health to the company
1 and 4 aren't really shanties tho I know exactly why you chose them lol. I don't recall 2 and 3 tho
@@isaac_aren actually none of them are shanties
@@mharmaansheikh6388 Ahh I see. Maybe once shanty of the week has run it's course we'll get some generally trad songs
@@isaac_aren no not now there are many shanties left yet but I heard those in black flag many people want to see Mr sean singing them again
@@mharmaansheikh6388 Sean said recently that the series is nearing it's close but hopefully we still get some other great songs after
I feel like the shanty man and sailors are actually singing most of this sarcastically, because it was such a difficult voyage or for other reasons. Think that has any merit, Seán?
Yeah, I think it has lots of merit.
Congratulation Seán, nice job! 😁
Merci toé.
Happy anniversary SOTW !
Thanks Andrei!
An entire year? Already? Sometimes it feels like more, others it feels like less. My sense of time has been thoroughly scrambled over the past year and a half, but I've got this nice set of landmarks in time to gauge things by. Thanks again for this wonderful series and all the work you put into it!
I know what you mean. Sometimes it feels like two weeks and sometimes like 6 years. Well, lets see how the next year feels.
I've loved every single one of these
Thanks NSR. That's high praise.
Many thanks for this series! There's something about your performance which makes it much more enjoyable than any other music to me at the moment, so I listen to a shanty or sing one to myself almost every day...
I'm glad you like the music and that you listen often. Lots more to come.
Very interesting. Wonder if it started as advertising or maybe satire/tongue in cheek, as it is, as you say, all "oh rah" about the Line.
Yes, quite peculiar. But a good song, nevertheless.
Thanks for the songs and the stories behind them. I'm glad we'll get more.
You're welcome. Lots more to come.
Happy 1 year shanty Aniversary. Of course it was Jack Spart the packet rat
Thanks Matty.
Thank you and keep doing great job for the next years!
You're welcome! Lots more to come.
@@SeanDagher : now we are ready to head for the Horn (I mean, next year); way hey roll and go (I mean, rock'n'roll). :)
Спасибо за творчество, песни, все душевно и очень интересно 🤝
Пожалуйста. Я рада, что тебе нравится музыка.
Has it been a year already? I swear 2020 had so little happening i almost treat as it didn't happen. Thanks for making it go past just a little faster
Hard to believe, eh?
Here's to the start of an even better year as the first year of shanties comes to a close.
You could still post the "boring" video just for fun. I agree with the person that said you might be surprised how many people would be interested.
I will try to get around to posting that video, but I really want to do it properly if i do it at all: with proper overlays and examples. It would probably take a lot longer than a regular video. But I'll try!!!
🎁
A present!!!
Sean there are more ports in England than just Liverpool , just saying 🤷.
Love your work , always look forward to my Tuesday instalment of shanty of the week
I will try to incorporate more different ports. We had Bristol a while ago, and The Worst Old ship was basically voyage along the south coast.
I don’t know if you have done this one yet but could you do northwest passage please?
Well, that's a Stan tune. I'm sticking with trad/anon songs for now, but I might eventually get into those.
Are you still gonna post the retrospective?
Maybe. If I can do it properly.
Are you OK, Seán? You sound a bit hoarse. Take care of yourself!
I thought so too. Hope all is well!
@@Kelly_Grey Me too, but wasn't sure if it was an appropriate question to ask
@@scrimbles2973 that's a good point, but I hope that he has seen enough commentary from us that he knows that anything we say like that is coming from a place of caring.
@@scrimbles2973 He said a couple of videos back that he was feeling exhausted, so I just wanted to remind him that he needs to put himself first at least once in a while!
@@lenamoser3888 I'm just glad you mentioned it, I thought it might make him uncomfortable
Happy anniversary Sean! More vital version: ua-cam.com/video/xDasE3o2nc4/v-deo.html
Thanks! I really love these Polish versions.
Sounds like Jack Sprat ended up going to sea once more, did he? Shame.
Alas, he did. None of us actually believed he would be able to stay on shore, though, did we?
