Some interpretations are up for debate, especially the Esus analysis. It is one hypothesis amongst others.

Reminder: The Esus analysis with the metamorphosis idea are hypotheses that are up for debate. I didn't intend to lay it as fact. This is a UA-cam video explaining my views on the topic. I really recommend to read academic sources to understand this topic better, like any other on my channel. This is also the case for the theory of Toutatis being a single god of war known under many names.
    Thank you!

I just had an epiphany concerning Cernunnos and the metamorphosis:
If the name Lugus is related to the latin Lux meaning light ( lugus becomes lugh in Ireland ), then we can assume that doing specific rituals ( represented by Esus ) with the goal of becoming one with nature ( Cernunnos) one can achieve enlightenment ( Lugus )
This could represent the ultimate spiritual journey that a druid goes through over a life time

    • @EidolonSpecus
      @EidolonSpecus 3 роки тому +5

Cernunnos is more specifically a god of death (and possibly rebirth), not a god of nature. He happens to be *in* what we would consider "nature", but he is not necessarily *of* it. Also, we do not have a reason to believe that ancient celts even had our modern (greco-roman derived) conceptual dichotomy between the "natural" and the "artificial", but still, Cernunnos does wear woven clothing and is always adorned with torcs, jewelry of rather advanced metallurgy for the time, so he's definitely not a "god of the wilderness" like some crazier interpretations have postulated.
Cernunnos is most often associated with antlers, which are a symbol of cyclical seasonal change, of life and death. Antlers die and are shed for the winter, and regrow back to life for the summer. A significant proportion of celticists nowadays support the hypothesis that Cernunnos mostly served as a psychopomp between life and death, and possibly the other way around as well, _maybe._ He happens to have been depicted surrounded by non-human animals once or twice, but he doesn't seem to do anything significant _with_ those animals in particular, only with the horned snake he's often depicted holding/choking; so those background animals may even have just been to denote a feeling of serenity and peace with his surroundings (since he seems to ignore them entirely, and they ignore him in return), or maybe they're just there as decoration to fill empty space in a piece of art.

      Unlikely
All the ideas about celtic polytheism being about "nature worship" are based on now highly critiqued interpretations of 20th romanticists and there is no evidence to support them

    • @Burlesco1920
      @Burlesco1920 Рік тому +2

Men, my epiphany was similar, because I see the antlers of Cennurnos as a being receiving enlightment (even it's shape suggests the chaotic state of natural things), and thus he transforms himself as one with the nature. Now I see that those gods with any kind of antlers are a representation of illumination, like auras that came later. So, I agree, Lugus is a being that fullfilled with this natural balance of order and chaos, one already connected with his surroundings. And Esus is the one who seeks the knowledge. I actually had this kind of idea after going to a ayuhasca session, where white fox made of pure light with antlers stood before me, just before I felt into the abyss of feeling reborn.

I find it very interesting that the Gauls praised a god by the name of Esus, who was often related to Mercury. With Mercury being the Roman equivalent of Hermes, the messenger god, it reminds me of Eshu. In the folk religions of many West African peoples there is a messenger god named Eshu/Ellegua/Exu. He was Orisha spirit of paths and the crossroads between all things. And, he was said to be childish - a trickster. Which, give the likely connection between Esus' transformation into the goat-like Cernunnos, posibly sharing origins with the Greek Pan, who was also a trickster. As well as Mercury and Hermes both being tricksters. It makes me ponder the thought of a greater origins that may descend farther than even the Indo-Europeans alone. I don't know, just food for thought...

Loved the video and was struck by how similar Gaulish is to modern CYMRAEG. ' cern' is 'curn' (horns) 'taran' (thunder) 'nant' is valley 'Moch' is pigs and of course the cauldron (crochan) that brought warriors back to life was part of the 'Branwen' saga in the Mabinogion.I was also struck by how similar the counting system and even the names for animals are nearly identical.!! Surely Gaulish would have sounded remarkably similar to the Brythonic spoken at the time?

Pre Roman times the Gauls had used the Ancient Greek writing system as we as incorporated some of their deities. It clicked in my head that the Greek word for thunderbolt is keraunós which sounds just like taranos. He could be the personification of the thunderbolt itself.

Esus kind of resembles Cú Chulainn, since they both share same traits of as gods of vegetations.
In the Great Raid, Cú Chulainn cuts down a massive tree to prevent Méabh's armies to take the Donn Cuailnge, and he places of tabú in which anyone who wishes to pass, needs to jump the tree. And three attempt to cross it but fail.
Later, Cú Chulainn and his son Fraoch (Nuadha, Connlaoi, Neachdaine) fight in a river, in which Cú Chulainn drowns his only son, that he had with Méabh. Three days later, Fraoch comes back to life accompanied with his trumpeters.

I've just had a theory... What if the Motrones are the mother of Maponos? Mabon ap Modron in welsh folklore is thought to be a reflex of an older god attested as Maponos meaning "the great son", his patronym "ap Modron" means son of Modron, which looks very clearly like a welsh reflex of Matrones, perhaps in a singulative Matrona.
I also think he is son of all three Matrones because this sounds very familar to the norse myth of Heimdall being son of nine sisters, and because the possible Irish version of Mabon; Macc Óc, was often seen as fairest of gods much like Heimdall.
Also this may be a stretch but Mabon ap Modron is once referred too as Mabon ap Mellt, with Mellt being a welsh term meaning "lightning", meaning Mabon's father may have been Taranis.

I have never heard of Cernunnos and Lughus being the same in fact they have nothing in common to be the same it's most likely they are related but not the same. If we take all mythology spectrums iron age and Medevil Celtic we know Lugh had 3 brothers and killed a creator being a Giant the 3 heads represents his brother's. In Irish mythology His 2 brother's died in Basque mythology 3 brothers kill a Creator Giant named Tartarlo. Through Gaul as shown here the 3 heads are still there . Also Lugh in Irish mythology has alot of overlapping stories with the Dagda who we know in Gaul to be Sucellus and Taranis. In pre Christian Irish mythology Dagda had 2 known sons before Brigid Aedh or Aedh Dubh and Bel , being the Irish Belenos later named Nuada. This makes Lugh they're brother and they're paraells. And on the Gundestrup Calderon it shows a figure with his head removed and replaced with a horned animal this all follows pre Celtic myth in Hinduism Cernunnos would be Lughus Grand father the grand father's father is who he kills to save the world his grandfather was another Giant who made him. Instead of just a cosmic supreme being we have Giants that made up the world. Found in Cantaberian mythology and Aquitani myths in Basque mythology and Brythonic Mythologies Sucellus as Dis pater was called the Father God of the Gauls because who he's based on he re-created the world in other Celtic spectrums A Monster of some sort gets killed by this Deity. Esus sounds like another name for Sucellus and Taranis Tarañes Revo etc

Great observation! We have the same problem with Sumerian deities ... confusing names & positions! It's pretty much screwed up all subsequent religion with confusions! One religion's good God is another religion's Devil. We will understand them in the next year if we can survive. The triple God is a function of our three-star system in perigee within a four-star system at apogee. Unfortunately, remember the verse that says "Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live." Yeah, well it's like that. Understanding a thing can be fatal!

The Esus analysis sounds nice. I already read something like that, yet not with Esus

So basically psychedelics have always been perceived as a way to meet with god.

All the pagan deities of Europe represent the same phenomena, such as love, gravity, wisdom and so forth. They are simply given different names across Europe as Europeans speak a variety of languages.
Cernunnos (Pan, Vidarr, Faun) holds a snake and torc to represent the cervix and sperm as he is the deity of adrenaline, which is found in all animals and is present during intercourse.
Taranis (Thor, Jupiter, Zeus) defeats the "evil being" (giant/Jotun) as the old ancestor as well as the placenta has to be killed for him to live. Also, the fetus 'sits' upside down on the placenta during pregnancy, which is commonly represented by a horse. Thus, the column represents the fetus and deity of gravity riding the placenta/horse whilst killing the old ancestor (himself) in order to gain his old knowledge through the placenta and be reborn.
The sunwheel is a depiction of the sun and the natural cycles. With it, Taranis, the deity of gravity and thunder is able to hold his power. Without the sun and the earth, we may not have gravity.
Sucellus could be Frey/Dionysus as they are also associated with wine, agricultural fertility, and wealth.
Rosmerta could be Jord, Juno, Demeter (Earth) as the Earth is the great provider. Furthermore, the pairing of Odin and Jord can be seen by the pairing of Esus and Rosmerta.
The Gaulish temples, like other European temples were particularly sacred and beautiful areas in nature. They were fenced in to keep people and livestock out to prevent use of the area and to preserve their beauty. The weapons and other items on the walls belonged to the dead and were hung so that they could collect them once they were reborn. Of which, the druids/sorcerers/priests administered the giving of after the 7 year old child was tested to see if they were the dead ancestor.
To see other names of the same deities this article is worth a read: www.burzum.org/eng/library/paganism19.shtml

In Gaulish, it would have been pronounced the way I said it in the video.

@@Gaisowiros My interpretation of this entry may be wrong, but it seems to go the way I proposed: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teutat%C3%A8s

Maybe someone descended from Celts would be better suited to fathoming this out.

Observe the origin of the trinity in christanity. Further proof that humanity only morphs rather than creates, ideas in the normal.
