Man, that whole farm is something else! I'd love to spend the day walking around there with CajunB, with my mouth shut and my ears open! And that okra! Seeing you pull an 8" pod off the plant and eating it raw says it all about that variety!
Great video. I live about 30 miles from CajunB and have visited his orchard a few times. I have purchased some cuttings and fig trees from him twice and plan on go back for more this fall. Brian is very knowledgeable on figs and the rest of his gardening. He enjoys doing it and does it all very well. You did a good job on the video and showed a lot. Keep up the good work.
This reminded me that I have some dwarf nanners in pots i forgot to plant. I agree the sweet potatos and okra are about all i can grow in the bed this time of year. In Central Florida.
Taken quite a few rides in that golf cart and eaten many fruits there that I’ve never seen anywhere else. He and Linda are some awesome people and friends of mine. He is a wealth of knowledge and doesn’t mind sharing it. Hope you got to check out that massive Champanel grape vine growing where his chicken run was before hurricane Ida.
@@brianrodrigue6821 thank you for the friendship, knowledge, wise words, and everything else you have done for me over the years. I am forever grateful!
Lots of cold tolerant non commercial varieties of bananas available in Australia..I have 6 different ones... Really worth growing... Far more delicious than the shop bought
Cajun B: Thank you for sharing your fig garden. Enjoyed learning about the pomelo and sugarcane, too! Travis: Thank you for taking us along on your road trip to New Orleans. Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 7/28/2022.
What a great video! I’ve been to Chackbay Farm, but taking this virtual tour of the property was such a treat. Thanks, Linda, for letting me know about it. I learned a lot and plan on watching it again!
What a great video of your adventures in Cajun Country. He has quite the spread there and lots of different things planted. It’s great to see different gardens throughout the country. Nice work Travis!!
It’s nice to see how well his figs are doing despite the rain and humidity. I think the Gulf Coast tends to dry out a bit during August (opposite of the Southeast), but it is good to see they’re thriving.
love the info, we are in 9a so glad to have a good start date to go by. Thank you Cajun B and Travis! The figs are awesome. Cant wait to buy another off of ya
Nicely done Travis. CajunB has a great garden. 200 Tomato plants! That would be a ton of tomatoes to pick. All the fig trees also. Would have to get an early start to the day to get those picked before it gets too hot outside.
I am thrilled to have found your channel!! The family and I are just over 1 year at our homestead, learning a ton of (new) old skills, we are getting our thumbs green a little bit this year. I'm excited to learn a bunch from you and your channel!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. God Bless
Growing up in NOLA, we raided many a fig tree in the neighborhood! Thanks for somewhat taking me back! :) BUT, I need to know where he got those Dwarf Cowhorn Okra seeds from! Would love to grow those. Currently, I am growing Red Burgundy, Clemson Spineless and Jambalaya.
Wow! Damn good video my man. I just bought this house with just a little acre plus.....now I want some more land to grow some more. I wish I could shake that old guys hand. I pray that success on you and your Family. One day I hope you'll have tours like that on your Homestead. Me and my Family will honored to visit and learn. KDWD! Keep doin' whatcha doin'!
Field peas and snaps and a little okra together is my favorite! And man those loaded fig trees are awesome! My uncle makes a little muscadine and scuppernong wine for the holidays. But I don't know what type fig trees he has but he has two big trees that are loaded every year. He made some fig brandy last year. It taste so good till you don't think much about it but 5-6ounces... If you are sitting down don't get up. If you are already up you might need to sit down! I have a hard time falling asleep half the time but a thimble full of that brandy and in five minutes you are sawing logs!
Wonderful video, thank you. I had the opportunity to live and work in Cajun country some 35 years ago and found the locals to be very hardworking and generous folk. There's really nowhere in the country like that area. You could do worse than to model your fig aspirations on Brian's knowledge and experience. I'll be taking a very hard look at that Biltmore tomato. How are the many and various fig cultivars crossed and created?
Wow I really enjoyed your video! This trip was worth its weight in gold! Got to get me some of these figs varieties to go with my Italian honey and brown turkey fig trees!
Love the video and Cajun B's Garden and trees - especially the fig trees. I've gotten the fig fever myself the last couple of years so that was great information for me. Thanks for sharing Travis and may God bless you and keep you safe going back home. 👍
I know you were like kid in a candy store being amongst all those fig trees. It's really inspiring to see all the different varieties. So far I've only got two, but I have gone to the LA Ag website for more information. I think I'm going to start a family tree of fig trees! Thanks for the great video as always!
Travis thanks for the great video content. Was the wealth of knowledge and information. Thanks for bringing Us along on your adventure To Louisiana. Thanks Robert from Atlanta.👍😎
I traveled for work and rented all the time, usually from Hertz. If they were running short of passenger cars and they had them, they'd offer Mustang or Camaro convertibles for the same price. To be honest, a little impractical if you had much luggage or work supplies and noisey being a soft top. After a few times (I did like the Camaro better) I swore never again. Give me the minivan! Nice to see a different view of the LDF channel.
I'm new to fig scene and thoroughly like field trip! Didn't know LSU put out so many varieties right in my own home state. Hope Miss Brooklyn enjoyed the visit also.
Man, deer got into my garden this year and have just devastated it! They ate my corn, beans, peppers, strawberries, cabbage, okra, Brussels, broccoli! I could have BAWLED! We live in MI and have lots of deer around but they’ve never jumped our garden fence before. I put some Bonide Repels All Deterrent around the perimeter tonight in hopes it keeps them out, as well as motion lights and whirly-gigs. If anyone has any other suggestions I am open! In past years we have planted our property with clover and wildflowers and that’s the only difference this year, we didn’t get around to re-seeding the clover.
Kandice, like many on this forum, you suffer heartbreaking damage from deer. Apart from the commercial deterrents, you can DIY your own spray from One Million Scoville hot sauce from Amazon, mixed 1/4 cup per gallon plus a tsp. dishwashing soap and sprayed on the garden perimeter. There are also motion detectors that can activate a tripod sprinkler. Old timers used to swear by hanging pieces of Irish Spring soap about 10' apart around the garden perimeter. Best of luck.
Absolutely great video, we northern boys don't get anything that much fun. So interesting to see what works there and things we can only dream of growing. Vegetables in the winter? We could grow mud balls, snowballs and icecicles up here in the winter.
Man I’d be in heaven down there with all them figs!! As I was watching I had the wife grab so fig bars, we love fig jam, bars etc!! Hope my tree produces them and they ripen this year, last year frost got to them but it was the first year transplant. I think on that big fig that’s fell over I’d cut the the majority of the tree on the ground and that one branch sticking almost straight up I’d stake you and let it grow my new main trunk. I was going to attempt to grow some sugar cane this year but didn’t so hope to grow a little next year, those pamelos was big!! I have a few citrus trees and a banana but unfortunately the people who sold me the banana didn’t know it was not a editable variety so got to get some others. Blue ice cream is one I want really bad, that stuff up here is exotic to us!! One day I’m going to have a conservatory so I can grow year round and citrus fruits etc. Looks like a good time and something for you to look forward to at your place!!
As a figaholic, I wish you had listed out all the fig varieties so we could see the spelling of them all. There are thousands of varieties of figs! I have about forty and growing.

This was real interesting to me, being in 9b. So cool how everyone's garden is so different.
That chopped fig wood might make some fantastic barbecue.
Good point!
I'll bet you were as happy as a kid in a candy store learning about the different figs and tasting them to boot! Nice video!
Cajun B got it goin on. Awesome video. Thanks for taking us along.
Sounds Ike that was a great trip. The gardens looked wonderful. 👍🏻
It was!
I really loved watching that! Bananas, figs, citrus, sugar cane, wow!
Really enjoyed that trip to Cajun B and Linda's beautiful place! Thanks to them for sharing it with us! That's a heap of production!

Nice! I have a few stragglers on my trees, but most of mine are done.
very good man

I absolutely love, love, love Pomelos!!!
Wonderful farm. Brave to visit in July. That heat in Louisiana is on a whole different level. I visited there during the summer and wow.
It was hot, but not much different than south GA. I liked the fact that there weren't any gnats over there. lol

Good question on how they're created. I'm not 100% sure, but it's probably a very delicate process considering the fig itself is an inverted flower.
Very cool guy… enjoyed the video.

As a figaholic, I wish you had listed out all the fig varieties so we could see the spelling of them all. There are thousands of varieties of figs! I have about forty and growing.
The ones he showed in the video were LSU Thibodaux, LSU Scott's Black, LSU Gilbeaux (not sure of the spelling on that one), and Black Madeira.

@@LazyDogFarm Travis, I believe that's the French Gilbeau, though it's not an LSU introduction.

He does sell some cuttings in the fall on figbid.com. We'll also have trees on our site next spring.

How did he start that root on the fig tree he had wrapped? Did he cut the branch & what did he wrap it in? Never seen that before.
He girdled the branch, or basically cut away the bark in a rink all the way around in one spot. Then he packed soil around that spot and wrapped with Saran Wrap and then foil.
Great tour and interview - a wealth of information! I would love to get my hands on some of those okra seeds...any suggestions??
I'll see if I can find some.
