The Sega Game Gear is notorious for having poor quality capacitors. If left unchecked, these leaking caps can cause permanent damage to the system. As the capacitors fail, common symptoms occur including distorted video, distorted or missing audio, failure to read cartridges and no power in extreme cases. In this video I document my experience installing new capacitors in a Sega Game gear. Console restoration like this is important for the preservation of retrogames.

Thanks for watching and SUBSCRIBING! ❤
Just got a free unit from a co-worker. You made it look easy to repair, now I've got a project for the winter. It came with 2 games! Sonic in the box with Japanese writing and other Gloc. Hopefully it comes back to life.
Watching this video, I may or may not have gotten on eBay and found one for $17... Looks clean, turns on, then shuts off instantly. Game Gear was my first hand held system ever. My wife had a Nomad growing up.
You should totally revamp a Game Gear to have update battery, screen, and sound. Maybe even a storage option. That would be super cool!
This is a great idea. I will definitely be upgrading a Game Gear in a future video!
@@MadModLabs This is going to be epic! I can feel it 😁
Man, this thing ate batteries!!! Loved it tho, and my gameboy
I am about to repair a game gear that I bought a week ago. Waiting on my capacitors. I will be taking my time fixing it. Thanks for the video
It would be interesting to see how much you could "modernize" something like that. Rechargeable battery, Bluetooth etc etc. I don't know how cost effective it would be, but still cool to think about lol
That will definitely be a future project. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video for the introduction of the Game Gear. I had one growing up and loved it, as it was my intro to many popular Sega franchises. Now I'm on my way to completing the NTSC collection, with 205/234.
I have two of these in this condition, thanks!
I had a GameBoy original, and later a PSP original. Both awesome in it's own ways.
Going to give this a shot. Just got a free system body is mint but caps blown.
Any help would be great, did this ceramic cap replacement and it turns on for one split second then goes off. Double checked the points and it seems they are correct.
Hmmmm I have one that I have been packing around for about 12 years now at least that I rescued from a recycle company and a few games but it had the hard shell carrying case. I couldn't let it get thrown away... Might be time to check this out.
I never had a GameGear but I found it always an awesome handheld so I bought it in 2015 a total repaired Game Gear with new glas and lcd light the colours are razor sharp it came with a high price but the quality is magnificant
Just got one it actually works but the screen is not clear and details are missing I can only hear audio with headphones and its very low. Any tips how to fix it? Weak capacitors?
Wonder if you can replace the screen with LEDs?
Hi
I have replaced all capacitors on 2 gamegear but I have blank screen on first and vertical Lines on second.
Quality video as always!
Please what is the value of the card cms ,capacitors with the potentiometer
What u charge? I have a game gear I would love you have fully updated and restored. It powers on but doesn't do anything
Yeah what happens is one of the traces comes off the board while u are trying to desolder one of the capacitors?....is it ruined?..I was desoldering the one closest to the harness in the upper left hand corner of the system and it came off
C68.
Nevermind, I just had to keep watching..lol.
I guess i have to do this to a $14.99 savers find. The batteries area was slightly crusty. Cleaned it up, popped in batteries, turnd it on. The screen showed a game then 15 seconds poof screen went blank. Well it worked till that happened 😂.
I have my chidhood with a bad screen. I want to replace it, but with an original one. Which is the best way to remove te old one without damage the ribbon cable? Thanks.
Do you have a map where the 1, 10 and 100 iu go?
Any chance I could send you mine for this same repair? What would you charge? I don’t trust my soldering skills enough! 😂
Ah yes, the classic 90s
Can I send you mine for the same repair?
You only labeled 4 blue and supposed to be 5. Where is the 5th?
Love it.
I had the original Gameboy
Do you restore for people
Can you repair mine?
LEATHERMAN’s are great..
Why is it that I can watch these
It’s 2:00 am. I have no interest in Game Gears or repairing electronics. Why am I watching this?
Not good for a product from the 1990s. Capacitors should never be a point of failure for any product, period.
I wish capacitors would never fail. The Game Gear was released in 1991 in the US. 30+ years is definitely on the high end for an average electrolytic capacitor's life span.
